Marine with robotic leg braces gets Bronze Star
JULIE WATSON
The Associated Press
SAN DIEGO — A Marine
who was left paralyzed by a
sniper’s bullet in Afghanistan
fulfilled a promise to himself
on Friday and walked using
robotic leg braces in a ceremony at Camp Pendleton, where
he was awarded a Bronze Star.
The crowd of 300 Marines
was silent as Capt. Derek
Herrera walked. All that was
heard was the faint whirring of
electric motors from the device.
Herrera then stood, holding
onto one crutch. With his
other hand, he saluted his
commanding officer, who presented him the award.
“Your drive and determination are great and you will continue to do great things, “ Lt.
Col. John J. Lynch, commanding officer of the Marine Corps
Special Operations Command,
told him at Friday’s ceremony.
Herrera had vowed to walk
at the event that also marked
his retirement after 8 1/2 years in
the military, saying he wanted
to leave the Marine Corps the
same way he joined. He has
gone from fighting on the battlefield to becoming a strong
advocate for veterans.
“I’m not out of the fight and
I’ll continue on,” he told his battalion on Friday, adding that it
was “truly an honor and a pleas-
ure to stand before you today.”
Herrera was the first person
in the United States to purchase the ReWalk system
recently approved by the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration,
according to the company,
ReWalk Robotics Ltd.
The special operations officer
was honored with the Bronze
Star for his actions on June 14,
2012, when the patrol he was
leading came under heavy fire in
Afghanistan. Herrera continued
coordinating efforts while receiving treatment for his own spinal
injury and collapsed left lung.
“The bravery and fortitude
he displayed inspired his men
to heroic feats as they valiantly
fought to save the lives of their
wounded team members and
repel the enemy assault,” wrote
Maj. Gen. M.A. Clark in recommending Herrera be recognized
with a Bronze Star.
Left paralyzed from the chest
down, the 30-year-old Marine
sought to be allowed to remain
on active duty and has pushed
himself to get back to walking.
His last day on active-duty is
Nov. 30.
The ReWalk is a robotic
exoskeleton system that allows
people with spinal cord injuries
to stand and walk. Several competing products that use the technology — nicknamed “electronic
legs” or “powered exoskeletons”
— are also being used and tested
in U.S. rehab hospitals. None so
far are fast enough to entirely
replace wheelchairs.
ReWalk was cleared by the
FDA for personal use, although it
has been on the market outside
the United States since 2012.
The device consists of leg
braces with motion sensors and
motorized joints that respond
to subtle changes in upper-body
movement and shifts in balance. A supportive belt around
the patient’s waist keeps the suit
in place, and a backpack holds
the computer and rechargeable
battery. Crutches are used for
stability, and the FDA requires
an assistant be nearby. Herrera’s
wife assists him.
The MARSOC Foundation, a
charitable fund for members of
the Marine Corps Special
Operations Command, raised
the money for Herrera to buy
the $69,500 device.
Herrera is working on a master’s degree in business administration at the University of
California, Los Angeles and
plans to start his own business.
“Every day is a choice to live,
love, inspire, honor the fallen,
make the world a better place
and walk in the footsteps of
giants,” Herrera wrote in a
Thanksgiving holiday column
published by UT San Diego in
2013.

Authorities identified the adults

wife, Trudi Hardman, both primaryschool teachers from Terrell, Texas,
and three of their children: sons
Dakota Watson, 15, and Adam

None of those killed wore seat belts

NEW ORLEANS — A 16-year-old
boy driving his parents and siblings
on a “dream trip” to Disney World
apparently fell asleep at the wheel,
causing the sport utility vehicle to
veer off the highway and roll over,
killing three children and two adults,
authorities said Thursday.
The teen, who had a driver’s license,
was cited with careless operation, a
misdemeanor, following the crash on
Interstate 20 near Calhoun, Louisiana,
at 11 p.m. Wednesday, said state
police spokesman Michael Reichardt.
The driver, who was not identified,
and two passengers were injured, one
critically.
While en route to Orlando, Florida,
from Terrell, Texas, the 16-year-old
journey.
Michael Hardman was a secondgrade teacher at an elementary school
in Terrell, said Terrell Independent
School District Superintendent
Michael French. He had worked in the
district for two years, French said.
Hardman also was a little league
baseball coach who coached his sons,
one of whom, 12-year-old Aaron
Hardman, was in critical condition at
a Shreveport hospital, Timothy
Hardman said.
“He never turned a kid away,”
Timothy Hardman said. “Michael
probably had the biggest heart of anybody you ever knew. He just loved
kids.”
The driver and the other injured
passenger were treated at the hospital
and released Thursday morning,
Hardman said.

Agency: Schools helped Sandy Hook shooter’s mom ’appease’ him

The Associated Press
HARTFORD, Conn. —
Adam Lanza’s parents and educators contributed to his social
isolation in the years before he
carried out the 2012 Sandy
Hook Elementary School massacre by accommodating —
and not confronting — his difficulties engaging with the
world, according to a state
report issued Friday.
The Office of the Child
Advocate, which investigated
Lanza’s upbringing to glean lessons for preventing future
tragedies, concluded that Lanza’s
parents, education team and others missed signs of how deeply
troubled he was and opportunities to steer him toward more
appropriate treatment.
Lanza killed his mother then
shot his way into the Newtown
school on Dec. 14, 2012, and
gunned down 20 children and
six educators before committing suicide.
Lanza’s obsessions with
firearms, death and mass shootings have been documented by
police files, and investigators
previously concluded the
motive for the shootings may
never be known.
In exploring what could have
been done differently, the new
report honed in on his mother,
Nancy Lanza, who backed her
son’s resistance to medication
and from the 10th grade on
kept him at home, where he
was surrounded by an arsenal of
firearms and spent long hours
playing violent video games.
“Mrs. Lanza’s approach to try

The family of Evelyn Alberding would like to thank

We thank the Women of

In this Season of Thanksgiving the Wigert family offers our heartfelt thanks,
sincere appreciation and
deep gratitude for all of the
prayers, thoughts and expressions of goodwill lifted
up for Nate Wigert during
the period of his life-threatening illness in January.
He continues to recover,
and we are deeply thankful for all who helped save
his life. Special thanks go
out to the nurses and doctors at Mary Lanning
Healthcare; Drs. Justin
Wenburg, RD French and
Matthew Stritt; the entire
medical staff in the Pulmonary ICU at Bryan East,
most especially Dr. Anup
Chakraborty; the Star Care
Life Flight team; and all of
the individuals, church and
faith communities who lifted Nate Wigert up in their
prayers and thoughts. We
owe you a tremendous
amount of gratitude and
Thanksgiving.
His recovery was truly a
miracle. No less than eleven medical doctors attribute Nate being alive to
God, and all the prayers
lifted up. They said his
grave condition was beyond the expertise and ability of modern medicine to
save his life. They attribute his recovery to your
prayers, and God answering them. For that, we are
truly thankful and offer our
everlasting gratitude. May
God Bless You in this season of Thanksgiving.
