SVRA’s U.S. Vintage Grand Prix at Watkins
Glen celebrated the 30th anniversary of the
organization’s major event in the Northeast
this year and did so with style. This weekend is
more than just another vintage event on a busy
calendar; it is a celebration and continuation
of one of the races that first introduced
road racing to this continent. Watkins Glen

Collier Cup Highlights
Sunday’s Racing
–story by Ed Kovalchick
The SVRA Vintage Grand Prix All-MG
60th Anniversary Collier Cup (whew) was
as rousing as usual on Sunday afternoon
in early September. A clear sky and a
perfect temperature were the norms as
some 45 historic MGAs, MGBs, MGB
GTs, Midgets, and a Sebring Coupe graced
the starting grid in a sea of eclectic colors
and spiking noises. This is what the MG
family, the featured marque for the festival,
had been waiting for all weekend and they
weren’t disappointed.
The Collier Vintage Cup race for MGs
was established in 1985 by vintage racer
Miles Collier to celebrate the original
Collier Brothers Memorial Cup race held
in 1954. The event was established to
memorialize road racers Miles and Sam
Collier, who promoted MG racing in the
1930s. These two gentlemen brought MG
sales to the U.S., and were instrumental in
creating the Sports Car Club Of America
shortly after WWII.
From the first snarling lap the competition
between Alan Tosler’s growling 1964 “B”
and Jonathan Lane’s howling 1966 “B” was
a treat to behold. Richard Luening hung in
for a while in his 1963 “B” but the roughly
50 additional CCs the other two engines had
put them ahead by Lap 3. Alan gave way to
Jonathan for about five laps, nearly bumper
to bumper in places, before he snatched the
lead on Lap 7. By the ninth and last lap, fast
Al (that’s what we began calling him in the
grandstands) had finally opened up a 2+
second lead and took the checkered for the
CCB class, while Jonathan captured first
place in the 3DP class. These competent
of five such cars in the field. Another car of
a recent vintage was third, Chris Fahan in a
2006 Swift 16.
The group 6 big bore production based
cars from the 1960s and early 1970s were next
up with a large field of Corvettes, Mustangs
and Porsche 911s. This was the Dick Mooney
Memorial Race in memory of Dick Mooney
who raced with this group for a number of
years before dying of cancer in 2007. Peter
Klutt from Halton Hills, Ontario in a 1969
Corvette lead home a tightly packed bunch
with another but earlier Corvette in the hands
of Michael Donohue, finishing second and
upholding Ford honor in a 1970 Mustang was
Curt Vogt of Wallingford, CT. third.
The Joel Finn Group 7 Cup Race was next
for both Groups 5 and 7. This field is made

sportsmen were truly the racing highlight of
the day demonstrating perfect racing lines
lap after lap!
By the sixth lap, the front runners began
lapping slower vehicles, which created
some additional fine dicing for positions
by the front runners within the numerous
stragglers. Several competitors had issues
and sadly popped into the pits, but the
track was still full of noise and excitement
at the end.
Dawn Myers’ 1961 “A” blew all of her
3EP classmates away with an overall 6thplace finish. Dawn raced aggressively,
turning a fast lap of 2:27, right in the thick
of the larger engined “B” boys. She finished
well ahead of second place Stirling Heath,
who placed 13th overall.
In the 1FP class, featuring mighty
Midgets, Peter Uzdavinis claimed the
crown in his 1964, 1275CC powered
machine. Even though the G-men began
to spread out, there continued to be small
bits of fun competition in packs scattered
throughout.
The 13EP class literally belonged to
Jeffrey Sienkiewicz in his 1959 “A,” which
featured an 1834 CC engine, and at the end
surprisingly and pleasingly most of the aged
late Cam Am years and earlier. The winner
was a 1979 Lola Prophet 333 Can Am center
seat racer driven by Rick Bell and followed
home by another Lola, a 1975 296 driven by
Randy Johnson. A 1971 Chevron B19 driven
by Derek Jones was third.
The final morning sprint race before the first
of the two Collier Cup races was for Groups
10 and 11 which included all out ALMS and
WSC cars and selected GT sports cars and
over 6 liter sports racing cars from the Can Am
era. Also in the field were modern Trans Am
cars and NASCAR “Cup” and “Nationwide”
stock cars. In other words, a fast and loud
group of sophisticated and more brutish
machines. As might be expected a relatively
recent but historic racer finished first in the
person of David Porter at the wheel of the
2007 Pescarolo Judd ALMS contender who
racers (the cars silly) were still tearing up
the track!
The real treat of the Collier Cup
competition is being awarded the Cup
itself. The drivers voted for the most period
correct car as well as overall sportsmanship
by the owner and driver in this case, Al
Costich of Rochester, NY. He piloted his
’68 BGT to a fourth place finish in the
3EP class.
In an earlier event featuring more elderly
MGs, 24 entries from 1932-1953 danced
around the track at some terrific times
(2:36.55 for Steve Konsin, 1950 Lester
MG). Manley Ford took the honors in his
1952 TD, followed by Kurt Byrnes, in a
1951 TD. With a smaller engine, Ed Cronin,
Saegertown, PA, snatched third place in his
1953 TD.
This massive event was two years in
development according to long-time racer
and former event class winner Richard
Powers. MGVR members worked with
the SVRA for over two years to bring this
gathering to fruition. This turnout features
what’s likely the largest MG gathering
in the country. Of the 384 racing entries,
almost 100 were MG or MG variants.
Amen to MG.

vintage, a 2008 Porsche RS Spyder driven
by Christian Zugel placed third. The highest
placed of the Group 10 cars was Sean Ryan in
a 2006 Ford Fusion NASCAR cup car.
After the power of the ALMS and NASCAR
field the next race was a bit different. It
was time for the Collier Cup MG race but
because there were nearly 100 MGs entered
the field was divided into two races. So, the
last morning race was the Kimber Cup for
pre-war and T-series racers. The winner was
Manley Ford in a 1952 TD ahead of two other
TDs driven by Kurt Byrnes and Ed Cronin.
Following the Kimber Cup the MGs came
back to park next to start finish and the MGs for
the Thornley Cup. Collier Cup lined up
on the pre-grid for their race. Spectators were
invited to look at the cars close-up and talk with
the drivers during a lunch break “fun walk.”
After lunch the Collier Cup Group
B race was flagged off with nearly 50 MG
Bs, MG As, and Midgets taking off after
Alan Tosler and Jonathan Lane both in MG
Bs. Tosler won the duel with Lane while
polesitter Richard Navin failed to finish. Third
was another MG B, that of Richard Luening.
Dawn Myers had the highest placed MG A
bringing her car in 6th and Peter Uzdavisis
was 9th in his Midget.
