Wear your former unit cap or shirt if you want to. PAGE 2 SOLID GOLD NOVEMBER 2014 A Message From The President Hello friends, The fall weather has been great for open top cars. I am considering selling my 2008 911 and buying a used Boxster or 911 Cab so I can enjoy those great days with wind in my hair and all that stuff. Our last two outings were great events with great weather. The trip to Bowling Green for parade laps around the new Corvette track was awesome! We also toured the National Corvette Museum and saw the "hole" along with several damaged Corvette's which was sad, but thankfully they can still restore several of the cars that fell in. Expect the hole to be filled in sometime in November, but expect those superdamaged Corvettes to remain as a memory of the past. If you haven't visited the Museum in some time, you should revisit as the exhibits are constantly changing. Our October trip to Lynn and Diane William's home on Old Hickory Lake was awesome also. We had 15 cars make the trek and park on the back lawn across the water from Fairview Plantation. Besides great food prepared by the William's, we had plenty of entertainment with the ski boats and Wake Boarder's doing turns around the lake. We also had a visit from a drone helo who took some great shots of the Porsche's by the lake. People's Choice Award went to Dan and Donna Martin for their newly restored red 356. Gary Schield came in a lose 2nd with his white 356. It's hard to beat those sentimental favorites at car shows. Save the date: January 17, 2015 for Annual Musik Stadt Banquet at Brentwood CC. PAGE 5 SOLID GOLD NOVEMBER 2014 From The Members By Musik Stadt PCA Members Ken's article seems to share many thoughts that I myself have had over the past few years, including that of what is really enough? For me personally, I find that it extends well past the issues of horsepower and options, to that of the nature of automobiles and society's attitude towards cars and driving. My Porsche history has been on the lower end of the horsepower curve you might say. Starting years ago with a 914, then a 924S, I surely wasn't experiencing a lot of power, but it didn't matter to me. Even moving to my current 1995 968 and 1999 Boxster didn't begin to touch the power realms of the 911 and Cayman. But still, that doesn't matter to me, nor that these cars lack the technological advancements of the current Porsche offerings. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate and admire all the features and gadgets of the current model lineup. Whether it's for the purpose of efficiency, safety or performance, I love to read about how they work and what they do. But many of those things seem to be increasing the distance between car and driver. In some ways, they are fooling us by blurring the line between what we are doing behind the wheel, and what the car is doing for us. Just look at where automatic transmissions are heading, like Porsche's PDK. While performance and fuel efficiency benefit, it allows drivers to get away with not knowing how to skillfully use a true manual gearbox. Many of the other systems do similar things, saving us from ourselves by correcting our mistakes. Perhaps that's where the majority of consumers are headed with cars. More and more view them as simply a means to get from point A to point B. They seem increasingly unconcerned with the journey in between. As a teen driving instructor, I'm continually amazed by the growing number of teenagers who don't know or care anything about how the car they drive works. Where once the car was a right of passage and a ticket to freedom, now it's just simply transportation. I'm glad it's more than that to me. I take great pride in having more than a simple working knowledge of the cars I drive, to the extent of doing the majority of work on them myself. I enjoy the mechanical simplicity and elegance of the older cars. Carburetors, distributors and points hold a special place in my heart. As do passive suspension systems and engines that don't require software. It’s that connected feeling that I crave, not the speed or power. Let me feel everything the car is doing, and know that it's all in response to what I'm doing at the controls. I fear that the days of that connection are fading fast. As technology and government regulations march forward, the older cars will become harder and harder to keep, maybe even illegal. When they're gone, so too will be that connected experience. Take a listen to Rush's (the rock band, not the radio personality) song "Red Barchetta". The world that it describes might not be that far off. PAGE 6 SOLID GOLD NOVEMBER 2014 Checked Your Tire Pressures Lately? By: James Cambron, Zone 3 Representative I check the tire pressure in my vehicles every six weeks, but when the weather changes dramatically (due to Alabama's notoriously short spring and fall) from hot one day to cold the next, then the air pressure will be 4-6 lbs lower or higher than prescribed--that is IF the air pressure was accurately set prior to the change in temperature. A drop of 4lbs in my 993 that calls for 42lbs in the front tires and 44lbs in the rear tires is a change of 9-9.5%; 6lbs is about 14%. Now, if your tires were low to begin with, say by 5 lbs, then a 4-6lb decrease in a 37lb psi is 11-16%. A tire 15% low is in the danger level and 30% low is considered critical. The less air in the tire, the more it flexes with each rotation, building-up heat in the sidewall, and the faster your go, the more it flexes, and the hotter the tires gets, until sidewall failure--which is normally a blow-out, not a small lead-down. Blowouts at high speed can be catastrophic. I've only had one blow-out and it was at about 80-85mph on a rear tire at Road Atlanta and it was a struggle to get the car stopped safely. If the blow-out had been on the front, it would have been that much harder to safely stop. Not even counting the inconvenience of having a flat tire while on a tour out in the countryside. By the way, did you ever get a spare tire for that Porsche? We demonstrate mounting a spare tire to the 987 and 997 Porsches every January at the Freddie Louis Tech session. Since 2005, the Porsches are equipped with an air pump and a bottle of sealant for 1/8" penetrations which by the way, Porsche has stated in a tech bulletin that their sealant is not very effective. Porsche advises you to replace the sealant with two cans of Prestone brand flat tire sealant. I have used the Prestone twice, once it worked and once it didn't (the hole was too big). You also need to know that all flat tire sealants clogup and destroy the tire air pressure monitor (TPMS) so in addition to buying a new tire, you have to buy a new set of TPMS sensors (Porsche dealers are prohibited from plugging or patching flat tires). cell signal to call for a tow truck. Once you do reach the Porsche call line, they have to relay the request for assistance to a local tow truck company, who will likely take some time to get to your location (two hours seems common--ask Bill Trevey), then they will flat-bed you to the nearest Porsche dealer (also likely an hour or more from your location--think about it--in Alabama, Porsche dealers are limited to Mobile, Montgomery, Birmingham, and Huntsville. In Tennessee, the dealers are in Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Kingsport. In Mississippi the only dealer is in Jackson. Of course, if you are on a Saturday tour, or some weekend trip, or after normal business hours, the Porsche dealer will be closed, so you get to rent a hotel room or get a rental car to return home, then return back to retrieve your Porsche. The dealer may or may not have a tire in stock to fit your Porsche, so that may be another day. It seems to me that paying $250-350 for a spare tire is certainly worth a whole lot more than this hassle. They are usually available from Oklahoma Foreign and LA Dismantler--but they don't make them anymore and the supply is decreasing. The tires will not be a problem, but based on your brake size, you may need a spacer or two and the appropriate length wheel bolts, that is the fitment issue. Then, you can order a spare kit which includes an aluminum jack and handle, a wheel bolt socket, a spare tire cover, and you can supplement the kit with a pair of cotton gloves, maybe a breaker bar and a nice 19mm socket, and a couple of 50 gallon plastic bags to envelope your dirty flat tire before you put it into your back seat, front seat, or hide it in the woods for retrieval, based on whether you have a passenger with you or not. Being from Alabama, I have the right to remind you that having a flat in your shiny new Porsche sports car on the backroads of red-neck Alabama while you wait some hours for a tow truck is not smart. So check those Porsche tire pressures. PAGE 8 SOLID GOLD NOVEMBER 2014 Concours On The Lake PAGE 9 SOLID GOLD NOVEMBER 2014 Winterizing Your Porsche By Ken Koop, The Yellowstone Region Editor’s Note: I know in Middle TN, we have the luxury of not necessarily having to let our Porsches sit all winter long. However, for those that choose to, the following tips are worth noting. the cells, the level is ok. If the cells are exposed then add distilled water to bring up to the top of the cell. Connect a battery maintainer. (Especially important for 1990 cars and newer). Everyone wants to keep their Porsches in the best possible shape they can. Living in this part of the country requires a little extra preparation before winter to have a car that will be ready for the road next spring. Even though you’re not using it, storing your car for six months can still be hard on it. With some preparation, your Porsche will look beautiful in the spring and be ready for the road. Here are some suggestions before putting your cars away for the winter. Top off the gas tank. Wash your vehicle. Be sure to thoroughly clean under the car as well as the wheel wells. After washing, don’t forget to open and dry door sills, sun roof sill, engine and trunk compartment. Block tires with 2 by 4’s or wheel chocks. Inflate tires to the maximum pressure that the side wall pressure permits. Don’t forget to readjust to the pressure before driving next spring. For manual cars leave gear shift lever in neutral, for automatic cars leave in park. Do not set parking break! (This stretches the cable over long periods of time). Cover your car. Wax the car if needed. Clean interior and trunk. (Never use cleaners with ammonia in them for the windows). Treat all leather with a good leather conditioner every two years. Apply a tire treatment and clean the rims. Change the oil and brake fluid if needed. Check all fluids for proper levels (coolant, power steering fluid, oil and windshield washer fluid--fill with a good fluid that will not freeze). Check the battery fluid level. Using a flash, light look into each cell, if the water level is above If at all possible leave in a heated garage around 62 degrees with low or no humidity. Place “Decon” in your garage to keep mice from dinning on your rubber parts or nesting in unwanted areas. If you have pets do not allow them into the area with Decon. It is also a good idea to start the car for 10-15 minutes every month to circulate fluids. As the car is running, turn the air conditioner and heater on to circulate their fluids as well. Pump the break and clutch pedals 5-10 times to keeps those parts functioning. With this extra care, your Porsche should last longer and have fewer problems in the years to come.
