I
WOULD like to thank the members for providing me with
the opportunity to be the new President of the Katoomba
RSL Sub-Branch following the resignation of Gary Wootton.
For those of you who don’t know me, I served in the RAAF
as a Pharmacist for 14 years and held the rank of Squadron
Leader when I returned to civilian life in 1994. I currently work
as a pharmacist two days per week at BestBuy Pharmacy
Leura.
I have been a member of the Katoomba RSL Sub-Branch since
I moved to Leura from Sydney in early 2011. I have regularly attended the monthly
Sub-Branch meetings since that time. As with all people newly appointed to office
I have some ideas which I hope will add value to the membership.
2015 is the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipolli campaign during World War 1.
The Katoomba RSL Sub-Branch will, as always, host the Anzac Day services to
pay tribute to those soldiers who lost their lives in combat. To help make this a
very special Anzac Day celebration for the people of Katoomba and the Upper
Mountains, I would like to personalise the service by dedicating a tribute to
relatives and friends of the local community who lost their lives during the Gallipolli
or other WW1 campaigns. To achieve this I need your help. If you or anyone you
know has a story to tell please send an email to [email protected].
Ultimately, I hope to be able to collate a local history and have it dedicated at the
Anzac Day services. All contributions would be very warmly welcomed and I look
forward to hearing your stories!
I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage people to join the SubBranch. It provides an opportunity for friendship, socialising and support should
the need arise. It is not just for the old diggers! Anyone with a service history
can join and now there is the ability to join as an affiliate member. Please refer
to the article adjacent. The annual membership fee from 2015 is $35. This is a
$5 increase as dictated by the RSL NSW State Branch. And if you are a member
please come to the monthly meetings held on the fourth Sunday of each month at
11am followed by lunch.
There will be guest speakers at both the October and November meetings. Details
can be found in “Diarise” section below. Also the Sub-Branch Christmas Party will
be held on Sunday 7 December. Invitations will be sent out soon so keep an eye
out. I look forward to seeing you there.
I would also like to encourage members to come along to the RSL club on the
first and third Fridays of each month. The Sub-Branch runs meat raffles between
6-7pm on these days and all proceeds are dedicated to our Anzac Day “Gunfire
Breakfast” provided free of charge to all who attend the Dawn Service. Often
quoted as being “hubby day-care” a couple of hours at the club supporting your

KATOOMBA RSL SOCIAL GOLF CLUB
The Club Championships have just been concluded following two rounds at Wentworth Falls on the 14th and
21st of September. The club Champion with the best scratch score was Paul Eastment. Best Net went to Orm
MacDonald with Errol Judd as the runner up. Third place was Ian Geddes, then Mick Duane and 5th place
went to Paul Field. It was two weekends of near perfect conditions, the golf was far from perfect but it was
very enjoyable for the 15 players involved.
The annual “Trip Away” heads off to Mudgee in November and will be a small bus load of intrepid golfers
looking forward to two days of golf and an overnight stay.
If you are interested in golf and want to have a go, please come and join us. All you have to do is be a member of Katoomba RSL
and join Social Golf ($10) and then come and play for free. The calendar is posted in the club, we play throughout the year and
there are prizes, trophies, trips, not to mention “Christmas Cheer”.

KATOOMBA RSL SWIMMING CLUB
We have had our Annual Meeting and welcome new Committee members, Vice President - Kathy Atkins;
Secretary - Jo Griffith; Treasurer - Liz Trihey. We look forward to their support and we also farewelled longtime Treasurer - Sue Crowe.
The Club was represented at NSW State Age Championships in September by Haig Buckingham who
competed in his favourite strokes 50m & 100m Freestyle and 50m & 100m Breaststroke. Well done Haig.
At the end of September the Swimming Club finished off the Winter Season with the State Development
Carnival held at Sydney Aquatic Centre. We were represented by Charlie Griffith, Mirah Larkin, Liam,
Charlotte & Jessica McNair.
The Club now has the Summer Season starting and this means moving to the outdoor olympic pool, which is always a pleasure to
swim in, and even better, if the weather is kind to us. We are looking forward to welcoming new members, as most people think that
swimming is a summer sport. This viewpoint is incorrect although it is true that swimming has two seasons, summer season swum
in 50m pools and winter season swum in indoor 25m pools. We are lucky at Katoomba that we have these facilities and do not have
to travel elsewhere simply to conform to the season requirements.
