THE NEWS OF DELAWARE’S
FIRST CONGREGATION
DECEMBER 2014
FROM THE PEN OR KEYBOARD OF RABBI SAKS
Shalom Chaverim,
The question below was recently posed to me.
Do you find the December Dilemma to be particularly stressful?
The December dilemma is not simply a December dilemma, it is a yearround dilemma. We are a minority that has been warmly embraced by our
fellow Americans, a testament to America's goodness. However, being handed
the keys to mainstream American society has made it very easy to forget our
Jewish identities. It is not uncommon for Jews in this country to consider
themselves to be simply Americans, not American Jews. However, most
Americans do not consider themselves to be simply American but to be
Christians, Muslims, etc. Most Americans crave a religious identity, and
people who are not raised with one will embrace the religious identity of the
majority. Therefore, it is not surprising that often American Jews who are not
raised with a strong Jewish identity celebrate Christmas.
I once heard a grandmother say that she would be upset if her grandson
was sent to a Jewish school because he would not be exposed to enough
diversity. A few years later I heard her lament the fact that her grandson was
raised with virtually no Jewish identity. Needless to say he was not attending
a day school. Being exposed to diversity is important, but one’s Jewish identity
should not be sacrificed for it. Just by raising a child in America he/she will
be exposed to diversity. As a minority we must make a sustained effort to
safeguard our identity. Three things in particular have been found to be
effective in inculcating children with a sense of Jewish identity: day schools
(especially as teens), Jewish camps and trips to Israel (especially as teens and
young adults when they are forming their adult identities).
It has been said that "The Jews have not kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept

Sisterhood President's Message
For those of you who missed the delicious Shabbat Dinner in November, you now have another
chance! Once again the wonderful team of Mollie Epstein Makar and Dianne Seidel, along with their
helpers, will treat those who are smart enough to make reservations to a delicious meal. As an extra
treat on this 4th night of Chanukah, Friday December 19, the students of the Hebrew School will be
leading the service. We appreciate all of the hard work that goes into these dinners!
Looking ahead, next month brings our 4th Annual Community Event on January 24, 2015. AKSE's
game night grew into three years of game nights, rotating amongst AKSE, Congregation Beth Shalom
and Congregation Beth Emeth. We are changing the format to a Classic Rock Party and we are once
more back at AKSE with the best social hall in town! Our vision of bringing the community together is
growing as Temple Beth El will become a co-sponsor for the very first time! Mark your calendars for a
fun evening. Planning is already underway, so please contact me if you are interested in joining the
planning committee.

DECEMBER 2014
Dear AKSE Congregants:
On the morning of Nov 18 terrorists attacked the Bnei Torah synaogue in Har Nof, killing 4 rabbis and a Druze
police officer and seriously injuring several others.
Please consider contributing to a campaign that has been established to help the families that have been
devastated by the attack.
Four families in the community, all from the same street in Har Nof, no longer have a father and husband. A
website has been setup to accept donations:
http://jewcer.com/project/do-something-for-the-families-of-har-nof
All donations will go directly to the affected families.
This attack was personal for one of our members, Barbara and Joel Roisman. Their son Ari lived in Har Nof for a
year when he began learning in Yeshiva and davened regularly at the shul that was attacked. He still has many
good friends in that community. Ari and his business partners were instrumental in establishing the donation
website. It has already been mentioned in the Israeli press:
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/187609#.VGvyTVfF_R9
Please give what you can to the campaign - all amounts help.
Thank you.

So many ways to Purchase Gift Cards!
1) Want to buy gift cards but are not able to get to the synagogue? No problem! Just call the
synagogue office, tell them what you need, and they will mail the cards to you. You will be required to
pay for them, by check, as soon as possible, but no later than seven (7) days after placing your order
It's that simple!
You might be asking .... why can't I just use my credit card to purchase gift cards and not have to write a check? Answer:
The synagogue needs to pay a service charge of up to 4% on credit card transactions, so, as you can see, this would eat
into the 5% we would earn on the sale of gift cards.
We are implementing this on a trial basis. We feel that this is a process we must try, to make it easier
for AKSE Congregants to obtain gift cards. The synagogue will assume the liability on the remote possibility that gift cards
are not received.
2) Come to the synagogue during normal business hours and purchase them directly from our friendly office staff
3) Come to the synagogue on Sunday mornings when the gift shop is open and purchase directly from Dianne Seidel.
4) Call AKSE Members:
Marty Zukoff—302 478 4734 Chalfonte
Dianne Seidel 302 479 0490 Green Acres
GIFT CARDS AVAILABLE:
ShopRite, Superfresh, ACME, Super G ($50, $100 denominations)
Walgreens ($100 denomination)
Since we all make purchases from supermarkets and drug stores, there is really no reason why we should not be able to
get greater than 90% participation from AKSE Congregants. There is absolutely no cost to you, and a great way to support
one of AKSE's ongoing fundraising projects.
To order your gift cards: Call the synagogue office at (302) 762-2705, or email your order to the office at [email protected]
For any questions about this program, please contact Marty Zukoff, at [email protected], or
