District 2 AAA Champions!
For the first time in their 46 year history, the Crestwood Comets football team clinched the 2014
District 2 AAA football championship defeating
Berwick, the winner last year, 35-19. Coach Myers said that he was happy for his players because
they worked so hard all year to get over the hump
and beat Berwick for the district title. Berwick beat
Crestwood last year 14-13 in a close game. In the
opening minutes of the game, Frank Aigeldinger
scored with a 43 yard touchdown. He would go on
to rush for 205 yards with 22 carries and two touchdowns. With minutes left on the clock, Jay Popson
jumped over a player to get a first down. Tanner
Kahlau then ran 49 yards down the sideline to cap
the win at 35-19. The Comets will play Bethlehem
Catholic, the District 11 AAA champions, at J. Birnet
Crum Stadium in Allentown on Friday, November
21, at 7 p.m. in the semi-final round.

Lady Comets fall
short in rematch
The Lady Comets were cool
and confident as they posed
for a picture before leaving for
the PIAA Class AA Field Hockey Championship in Whitehall
to play the District 1 champs,
Villa Marie, in a rematch of the
2012 championship game.
The team, under first year
coach Patsy Moratori, was
undefeated 13-0 in the regular
season and won the District 2
title for the 21st time.
The game was scoreless
until Crestwood took a 1-0 lead
early in the second half thanks
to a goal scored by Hunter Pitman with an assist from Lizzy
Dessoye.
With 16:30 left, Villa Marie
scored to tie the game 1-1;
then with 2:23 left, Villa Rosa
scored off the corner and took
the lead 2-1, which was the
final score.
It was an outstanding season
for Coach Moratori and the
team – the first time in school
history that the team made it
to three consecutive championship rounds. Now they will
focus on the 2015 season.

The eighth grade class of St. Jude School is sponsoring a Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 6 from 9 a.m. until noon

tax rate. Supervisors presented

their regular meeting.

NSP holds Animals in Winter program
Nescopeck State Park held a
special Hide-n’-Seekers: Animals in Winter program on
Thursday, November 13 for
preschoolers age 3 to 6 years
old.
The fun program was held
both in and outdoors and
included story time, crafts and
a scavenger hunt. Katie Martens, an Environmental Education Specialist from the Hickory Run Complex and DCNR,
read a story called Under the
Snow which is about where
animals go in the winter.
It was a chilly and cloudy
day, but the children had a
great time looking for items
like woolly bears, pine cones,
insects, animal tracks and
much more.

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Mountain Top hosted the
Women’s Club of Mountain Top’s annual craft auction on
Sunday, November 16. The auctioneer was Lois Scott with
help from Leigh Michel and Jacquie Fine. Leigh Michel and
Gaylene Hunter were the co-chairs. The popular event was
well attended and there were many handmade items, gift
certificates, household items, photographs, Christmas items
and more that were all donated by local artisans and businesses in support of the largest fundraiser for the Women’s
Club. Proceeds will be used within the Mountain Top area.

Jason Dotzel was recently recognized as Crestwood High
School’s Senior Student of the Quarter. He is the current
class president and participates on the Crestwood basketball and golf teams. He is interested in several schools;
UNC, ECU, Pitt, Richmond, UF, and King’s. He plans on
majoring in accounting and will pursue a law degree. His
parents are Tom and Tina Dotzel and he has an older sister
Shannon.

A Veteran’s Day breakfast, sponsored by Cub Scout Pack
#433, was held on Saturday, November 8 from 8 a.m. to 12
noon at Emmanuel United Church in Dorrance. All veterans
and children under five enjoyed a delicious breakfast at no
cost. The scouts worked in the kitchen as well as in the dining hall serving breakfast that consisted of eggs, sausage, toast
and pancakes along with coffee, tea and orange juice. The
scouts wanted to do something special to show their appreciation for our veterans that served in the armed forces and
continue to serve our great nation.

Mountain Top Youth Soccer Association
U-11 boys finished the tournament undefeated tallying wins over Kingston, Plains,
West Side and Pittston. Strong defense, balanced offense and solid goalkeeping helped
Mountain Top score 17 points while holding
their opponents to 2 over the course of the
tournament.

Plaksa to attend Central Michigan University for gymnastics
Wyoming Seminary senior
Gianna Plaksa of Mountain
Top, a gymnast, will continue
her academic and athletic
career at Central Michigan
University, Mount Pleasant,
Mich., in the fall.
Plaksa will compete for
Central Michigan head gymnastics coach Jerry Reighard,
now in his 30th season of
coaching the Chippewa
women’s gymnastics team.
Plaksa considered the University of Pennsylvania, Texas
Women’s University, Lindenwood University, Brown
University, Cornell University and Temple University.
She chose Central Michigan
because of the university’s
strong science programs and
small-town community environment.
“Coach Reighard works
with his team members to
help them do well in the
classroom as well as in the
gym,” she said. “During
my visit I met the team and
thought they were very nice
and welcoming. I hope to
compete as a freshman on
floor exercise and uneven
parallel bars and look to
enter the all-around competition later in my career there.”
Plaksa has been competing in gymnastics for
13 years and competes for
Northeast Gymnastics Academy in Hanover Township.
A two-time Level 9 state and
regional qualifier in 2010 and
2011 and three-time Level 10
state and regional qualifier
in 2012, 2013 and 2014, she
took third place in all-around
in state competition and fifth
in all-around in regional
competition in 2013; she was
also a National team qualifier in 2013. In 2014 she was
second in all-around at states
and ninth at regionals and
was a qualifier in the 2014
National Invitational Tournament, where she finished
ninth in the all-around.
Plaksa plans to major in
biology. She is the daughter
of Anne Plaksa of Mountain
Top and Edward Plaksa of
Exeter.

Rice Elementary holds 9th
annual Race For Education
Rice Elementary students
participated in their annual
Race for Education on October
16 at the school.
This event helps raise
funds for the fun-filled PTA
sponsored programs such as
enrichment programs, field
trips, book distributions, and
many other educational experiences throughout the school
year.
Each student was given the
opportunity to walk or jog
1/4 mile around the school as
many times as they can within
an hour limit in order to earn
the contributions made from
businesses, family, and friends.
This is a great way for students, teachers, staff, and
parents/guardians to come
together to raise money for the
school and promote a healthy
lifestyle.
The students would like
to thank everyone for their
donations and for making their
annual Race for Education a
huge success. The PTA would
like thank the local businesses
that provided mascots who
attended which included Red
Robin, Sweet Frog, Tux from
the Penguins, and Sonic.

Feed-A-Friend food pick-up set for
Saturday, November 22

Members of St. Jude Parish, Scout Troop 60, were among the
scouting organizations from the Mountain Top area that distributed door hangers on Saturday, November 15, reminding
residents to put a plastic bag with non-perishable food on
their doorstep before 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, for
Feed-A-Friend. The scouts will be back then to collect the food
and take it to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where volunteers will
unload the donated food, sort it by food type, and pack it for
distribution on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Suggested
items include instant potatoes, stuffing mix, pie crust mix and
pie filling, turkey gravy, cranberry sauce, apple sauce, canned
fruit and vegetables, soups, jello, pudding, rice, cereal, crackers,
and powdered milk. No glass items can be accepted. Monetary
donations are always accepted.
Crestwood’s JV Icemen start season off with victory
The Crestwood JV ice hockey
team faced off against Pittston
Area on November 8 at Revolution Ice Rink in Pittston.
This was the opening game
of the season for the JV team.
Scoring began in the first period
by No. 44 Matthieu Lacoste,
assisted by No. 55 Kyle Katra
and continued with No. 32 Jared
McCune, assisted by No. 58 Austin Dunsmuir one minute later.
Matthieu Lacoste got a second
goal in soon after assisted by
No. 11 Wil Ziegler. The period
ended with Jared McCune getting his second goal, unassisted.
The second period continued
with Crestwood scoring, first by
No. 28 Matthew Dopp, assisted by Wil Ziegler. Next, Jared
McCune completed his hat trick
in the period, assisted by No. 52
Andrew Ryman. No. 87 Tyler
Govan scored next, with an
2 Complete Pair of Glasses and Exam
assist going to Andrew Ryman.
The second period ended with
No. 54 Ryan Zielinski scoring
assisted by Jared McCune.
The third period opened
with Crestwood up 8 to 0. Matthew Dopp continued the scoring with an assisted goal with
No. 67 Kevin Frisbie. No. 43
Brandon Womelsdorf got an
unassisted goal in, followed by
Andrew Ryman scoring assisted by Matthieu Lacoste. Jared
McCune completed the scoring
frenzy, assisted by Ryan Zielinski. Crestwood won 12-0.
Crestwood’s goal was tended
by No. 50 Reed Karaska and
he stopped 6 shots on goal.
The team is coached by Frank
Govan, Carl Karaska, and Bill
Ziegler.
The next game for the JV
team is December 5 at 5:15

No tax increase
planned in Wright
Wright Township supervisors unveiled the township’s
2015 budget and it is good
news for taxpayers. Despite
a nearly $800,000 increase
in anticipated expenditures,
supervisors do not plan a
property tax increase next
year. The general fund budget anticipates expenses totaling $3,050,121 and maintains
the property tax rate of .07516
mills. Supervisors anticipate
intergovernmental revenue
to increase from $220,058 to
$953,091, thanks mostly to
a $710,000 gaming revenue

Wright Township resident
Vince Wojnar has kept supervisors in his home community
on their toes when it comes to
keeping traffic signals working
properly. Wojnar addressed
Fairview Township officials
about his concerns about the
timing of signals on Route 309
in that municipality. Wojnar
pointed out that there appears
to be problems at the traffic
lights at Route 309 and Kirby
Avenue and at South Main
Road. He said the left turn
arrow for northbound traffic
at Route 309 and Kirby Avenue,
lights even when there is no
one in the left turn lane, forcing southbound drivers to wait
for a green signal.

Fairview Township is looking
for citizens who are interested
in serving on the township
planning commission and as
the municipality’s representative on the Mountain Top
Area Joint Sanitary Authority. Supervisors accepted the
resignation of Silvio Talarico
as the township’s representative on the sanitary authority.
Talarico told supervisors that
he is moving from the area.
The township already had a
vacancy on the planning commission. Anyone interested in
either position should contact
the township office.

replaces hydrant
markers
Mountain Top Hose Co. No
1 members were out recently
replacing fire hydrant markers that had been damaged
or stolen, according to hose
company president David Hourigan. The markers are important in winter months since
fire fighters rely in them to
locate hydrants which have
been covered by snow.

Dean authority to take necessary steps to enforce requirements of a subdivision plan
for the Heritage Woods development. Residents of Burma
Road had complained about
storm water runoff from the

The White Haven United Methodist Church held its semiannual election day roast beef dinner on Tuesday, November
4 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. The dinner included roast beef,
mashed potatoes, gravy, cole slaw, corn, green beans, rolls,
beverages and dessert. The church fellowship hall saw a
steady stream of diners throughout the evening anxious for
a great homemade roast beef dinner.

Mt. Zion United Church of Christ held its annual fall
breakfast buffet and bake sale on Sunday, November 9 at
the Slocum Volunteer Fire Company from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tickets cost $8 for adults, $4 for children 6 to 12 years old
and children 5 and under enjoyed their breakfast for free.
The delicious all-you-can eat breakfast included bacon,
sausage, eggs, home fries, pancakes, toast, coffee, juices,
and homemade goodies. The annual breakfast is a popular
event and enjoyed by many every year and this year was no
exception with a super turnout.

The Mountaintop Family Church held a soup and chili
cook-off on Saturday, November 8, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Cost per entry was $10, tasting was 25¢ per soup/chili and
voting was $1 per vote. There was a great variety of soups
and chili for all to taste and vote on from creamy cheddar to
standard chili and everything in between. During the cookoff there were free hayrides and a moon bounce was set up
in the large fun town room for the kids to enjoy. A dessert
auction was also held at 2 p.m. following the cook-off. All
event proceeds go to the children’s and teen ministries.
Everyone had a great time all the while helping to support
the children’s ministries.

They plan all the events of
the church. There are alot of
things coming up in the following weeks for the holidays.
On November 23, they will
hold their annual covered dish
dinner for the Prayer Partners.
Prayer Partners get together
once a year to pick a name
of someone and pray for that
person daily throughout the
year. At the dinner they find
out who their partner was for
the year and pick a new name
for this next year. All are welcome. It is not just for Stairville
members. The dinner begins
at 12:30 p.m. following church
services at Slocum.
The church will be collecting gloves, hats and scarves
for Ruth’s Place. A basket will
be at the foot of the Christmas
tree in the front of the church
to place those items. Tree decorating will be November 25.
Feel free to come and help
get the sanctuary ready for
Christmas.
On December 1, the church
will hold its annual hunters
breakfast. Come and start your
day with a hot breakfast buffet style. The menu consists
of eggs, toast, sausage, ham,
pancakes and home fries, and
orange juice. They fill your
thermos for free with coffee,
tea, or hot chocolate. Breakfast
is $5. Breakfast is served from
4 to 8 a.m.
The congregation will be
baking cookie packs again this
year. Cookie orders are due on
December 7. Cookies are due at
the church on the 14th and all
cookie packs are ready for pick
up on the 15th. As usual, they
are packed with gift giving in
mind with up to 2 dozen cookies per pack. Each pack costs

The Christmas party will be
held on December 9 at 6:30
p.m. The cost of the dinner
will be $13 that includes your
tip. Ellis Catering will supply
the food. They will also have
an open ice cream bar with all
the fixins’. Anyone wishing
to, can donate to those fixins’ with cherries, syrups, nuts,
sprinkles or whipped cream.

desk inside the front door to let
them know you’re coming and
how many. They must have a
head count to order correctly.

Christmas bazaar on Sunday, November 16 from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Local artisans showcased
their handmade crafts as well as a variety of homemade
goodies for all to purchase. There were many items available
such as handmade Christmas ornaments, decorations and
Christmas cards, jewelry, magnets, knitted and sewn things

monthly program, the New Life Community Church, located

fun program on the 2nd Friday of every month from 6:30 to

The first dinner and movie night was held on Friday,
November 14 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a beef stroganoff
dinner and the showing of the very funny film “Mom’s
Night Out”. Cost for the evening was a mere $3 donation.
