Data
The Bachelor of Science in Computational
Modeling and Data Analytics (CMDA) is a
new degree, beginning in 2015, designed for
entry into the world of big data and computational mathematics. It imparts the unique
blend of skills from Statistics, Mathematics,
and Computer Science needed for attacking
the increasingly complex, data-based problems arising with ever-greater frequency in
business, industry, government and beyond.
CMDA training provides what employers
want: People who can take Big Data and turn
it into Useful Data.
“The concept and strengths of the proposed
curriculum are unique and are essential to
advancing the capabilities of our industry and
any industry relying on information.”
ICF International
“Paragon has precise interests in this new
major. Specifically, we are interested in participating in the development of a workforce
suitable for creative use of massive datasets
for predictive, actionable, and risk analysis.”
Paragon Technology Group
“Intelligence gathering and data analytics, both in the government and commercial
sectors is a burgeoning area of great national
importance...”

Core Requirements
With its blend of statistical techniques,
mathematical knowledge, and computational expertise, Virginia Tech’s Computational Modeling and Data Analytics
degree presents a unique undergraduate pathway for entering the world of big
data and quantitative science. CMDA’s
interdisciplinary approach has students
working with world leaders in Statistics,
in Mathematics, and in Computer Science. We have brought these disciplines
together to create a degree attuned to
the rapidly changing, data driven landscape now impacting every field of human endeavor.
As we developed the CMDA curriculum
we paid particular attention to needs of
the workplace. Employers told us they
wanted problem solvers; they wanted
communicators; they wanted team players; and they specifically wanted people
with the knowledge and training allowing them not only to use, but to grow
with, the evolving spectrum of massive
data techniques. In competitive environments where data overload can stall development, a new breed of flexible data
scientist, spanning the traditional fields
above, is being demanded.
The CMDA program gives employers
what they need. Graduates will have the
skills to work with enormous quantities
of data, to process and model it in ways
that provide maximal insight, be it in
health care, defense, energy, education
– in fact, in any realm that depends on
information.
