THANKSGIVING IN AMERICA
Every year, at this time, Americans gather with family and friends in order to celebrate Thanksgiving, sometimes referred to as “Turkey Day.” This national holiday takes place every year on the fourth
Thursday in November. The Thanksgiving holiday was first begun under George Washington. The First
National Proclamation of Thanksgiving was given by the Continental Congress in 1777 from its temporary location in York, PA. It was again revived in 1863, when during the Civil War, President Abraham
Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in
the Heavens
Every school child learns the story of what is commonly referred to as the “First Thanksgiving”
celebrated by the Pilgrims of Plymouth Rock after their first harvest in the New World in 1621. This feast
lasted three days, and it was attended by 50 Pilgrims, (all that remained of the 100 who had landed the
year before) and 90 members of the local Indian (Native American) tribe. Massachusetts Bay Colony,
populated by Puritans, celebrated their first Thanksgiving in 1630.
A new tradition began 1947, when the National Turkey Federation presented the President with a
live turkey and two dressed turkeys. JFK was the first president reported to spare the live turkey and
President Reagan was the first to grant a Presidential Pardon, a tradition carried on ever since. Do you
know that Benjamin Franklin once campaigned to have the Turkey, not the Bald Eagle, named as our
national bird?
In the U.S., most families typically center their Thanksgiving meal on the roasted turkey. Depending upon ones roots, special elements of other cultures or traditions may be incorporated into the family
celebration on Thanksgiving Day. Today, Thanksgiving often involves a “full package” of religious services, parades, football games, family gatherings, huge meals and, in many cases, lots of leftovers to be
recycled in rather creative ways in the days following the holiday.
Every year, it is traditional for the President of the United States to issue a Thanksgiving message
to the nation. In more recent years, one of the more meaningful and prayerful messages was delivered
in 2003 by President George W. Bush and I would like to share it with you because, in my view, it helps
us all to focus on the real meaning of what Thanksgiving in America should be all about.
“Each year on Thanksgiving, we gather with family and friends to thank God for the many blessings he has given us, and we ask God to continue to guide and watch over our country.
Almost 400 years ago, after surviving their first winter at Plymouth, the Pilgrims celebrated a harvest feast to give thanks. George Washington proclaimed the First National Day of Thanksgiving in
1789, and Abraham Lincoln revived the tradition during the Civil War. Since that time, our citizens have
paused to express thanks for the bounty of blessings we enjoy and to spend time with family and friends.
In want or in plenty, in times of challenge or times of calm, we always have reasons to be thankful.
America is a land of abundance, prosperity and hope. We must never take for granted the things
that make our country great: a firm foundation of freedom, justice and equality; a belief in democracy and
the rule of law; and our fundamental rights to gather, speak, and to worship freely.
These liberties do not come without cost. Throughout history, many have sacrificed to preserve
our freedom and to defend peace around the world. Today, the brave men and women of our military
continue this noble tradition. These heroes and their loved ones have the gratitude of our Nation.
On this day, we also remember those less fortunate among us. They are our neighbors and our
fellow citizens, and we are committed to reaching out to them and to all those in need in our communities.
This Thanksgiving, we again give thanks for all of our blessings and for the freedoms we enjoy
every day. Our Founders thanked the Almighty and humbly sought His wisdom and blessing. May we
always live by that same trust, and may God continue to watch over and bless the United States of
America.”
On Monday evening, November 24th at 7:00 PM, let us all try, as a parish family, to gather here in
our church, in order to give thanks to God by celebrating holy Mass. Let try our best to make our
“Thanksgiving Package” be centered not upon self indulgence but, rather, on the one to whom
we need to GIVE unending THANKS– Almighty God!

TURKEY DOESN’T MAKE YOU SLEEPY
AND OTHER FUN FACTS
CalorieCount.com, a health and wellness site, with
more than 5 million members, put together some
facts and figures on Thanksgiving. Did you know….
*Each Thanksgiving, the U.S. eats 690 million
pounds of turkey. That’s the weight of Singapore’s
entire population.
*Pilgrims used a knife, spoons and their fingers at
the first Thanksgiving. The fork was missing from
the table until the 1700’s.
*Ben Franklin desperately wanted the turkey not the
bald eagle, to be the official U.S. bird.
*50 million pumpkin pies are eaten each Thanksgiving.
*750 million pounds of cranberries are produced.
*3,000 calories are consumed by the average person on Thanksgiving.
*88 percent of Americans eat turkey at Thanksgiving.
*Typically, turkey is made up of 70 percent white
meat and 30 percent dark meat. (Luckily for us, the
U.S. generally prefers white meat while other countries like dark meat.
*Dark meat provides richer flavor, while white meat
has fewer calories and less fat.
*Turkey is rich in zinc and vitamin B-niacin and this
makes turkey a Top 10 food for eyesight.
*Turkey doesn’t make you sleepy, even though amino acid tryptophan is present. Scientists blame alcohol and vast caloric intake at the feast.

SECOND COLLECTION
The Advent “Giving Tree” will be in the Church entrance next Sunday. Please take an ornament and return the indicated gift in support of our brothers and
sisters, including our local religious order infirmaries or
nursing home residents and other brothers and sisters
in need. Just think how this little thoughtfulness will
bring joy to the people who really need to be lifted up!
Return the gift to the tree (unwrapped) in a gift bag with
the ornament attached by Sunday, December 14th
and we will be sure that St. Nicholas delivers them to
their recipients before the big day! Thank you for your
thoughtfulness.

As we pause to observe Thanksgiving, we are asked to
sacrifice a little on behalf of our less fortunate brothers
and sisters. This special collection enables the archdiocese to assist in providing for the pastoral needs of the
hungry, homeless, and physically and mentally afflicted
in our communities throughout the nation, most especially here in New York. Thank you for your customary
generosity to this special outreach to the very “least of
our brothers and sisters.”
A THANKSGIVING REFLECTION
As many of us gather together with our loved ones and
friends, this Thanksgiving, let us remember to pause
and give thanks to God for all of our many spiritual and
temporal gifts. Let us also be ever mindful of the many
in our country who are unemployed or underemployed,
and the millions, around the world, who have so little
while we enjoy so much. God bless one and all.
