Issue 38 Volume 4 November 21st 2014 All to do on Sunday A huge improvement is needed by Beale if they are to overcome the challenge of Knocknagoshel on Sunday next in round two of the North Kerry Senior Football Championship. On Saturday last Beale hosted neighbours Asdee in the opening round and managed to emerge with a three point win but they were far from convincing in a lacklustre second half which saw the hosts only manage to score one point from a free. Beale were certainly the better team on the day and led by 204 to 0-03 at the break but Asdee gave it everything in the second half and the home side certainly knew they had been in a game by the time the final whistle went. Poor passing and some horrendous shooting by the Beale, allowed the Asdee men back into the game and had their forwards been more accurate, the final result of 2-05 to 0-08 might have been much closer indeed. Manager Patie O’Mahony has a number of injury worries for Sunday’s game which is scheduled for 2.45pm in Castleisland. 2 Well, it has been an amazing week of weather with dry sunny days since last weekend , until this morning (Friday) that is when the rain has returned once again. There is however a bite in the air as temperatures have dropped even further but you cannot complain as it is ideal weather for walking the beach , playing golf or just generally just getting outdoors. Beale got their North Kerry Championship campaign underway on Saturday last but were far from convincing as you can read elsewhere in this publication. This Sunday in round two, they take on Knocknagoshel in the second game of a “Double-Header” in Castleisland at 2.45pm. The opening game at 1.00pm is Castleisland Desmonds versus Ballydonoghue . However, Beale will have to cope without their manager Patie O’Mahony, who has been suspended for four weeks by the North Kerry Board following a report by the referee for alleged abuse. Having been on the side-line at the game , I heard what went on and believe me, the referee got stick in equal measures from the mentors of both teams for a shocking display. To single out a mentor from one side and let those from the other team go unpunished is a total injustice but that’s North Kerry football !! The Ballybunion Events Committee are currently putting the finishing touches to plans for the Annual Christmas Lights Festival which will take place on Sunday December 7th at the Supervalu Car Park. As always, it promises to be a wonderful community occasion and of course the “Man in Red” (Santa Claus) will be there also to meet the children. Please not that the Cove Youth Cafe’s “Céilí Beag” scheduled for tonight in Kilcoolys has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances but it will go ahead at a later date which has yet to be determined . Wishing Beale Under 14’s and Seniors all the very best this weekend. Ger 2 3 Birthday surprise for the “Small Farmer” Readers Competition Winners Congratulations to Marian Dee of Cliff Road and Darragh O’Connor of East End who each won a pair of tickets to Radio Kerry’s “Night with the Stars” concert at the Brandon Conference Centre in Tralee on Wednesday next November 26th. Marian & Darragh correctly told us that Mike Denver’s real name is Michael Fallon and they were the first two names out of the hat from over one hundred entries. The line up features some of the biggest names on the Irish country music scene and M. C. for the occasion will be Radio Kerry’s Dermot Moriarty, while yours truly will be broadcasting the “Sounds Country” programme on Radio Kerry, live from the hotel on the night also. Mike Beasley (pictured above with his sons Declan, Michael & Colm) got the surprise of his life on Sunday evening last when he arrived at Courtney’s bar to find a huge crowd of his family and friends lying in wait to surprise him for his 60th birthday. A huge thank you to everyone who entered, and keep an eye out for more exciting competitions and giveaways in future editions of Ballybunion News. Known affectionately to his friends as the “Small farmer”, Mike from Ballyeigh, was certainly shocked and had no idea what was in store for him as he entered the side door (as he usually does) and found the pub in darkness. Suddenly all the lights came on and there were his family and friends lying in wait with a big cheer. A fabulous evening ensued with a sing song and some party food but pride of place went to the fabulous birthday cake (below) which was presented to him. Made by local girl Caitrín Griffin, the cake had little models of Mike, his three sons and his beloved tractors and “Zero Grazer” made from icing and was certainly a big hit with everyone present. 3 4 4 5 Fundraising Night at the Dogs North Kerry says farewell to a Legend A fundraising night at the dogs in aid of the Healy family of Asdee will be held at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium in Tralee on Saturday December 20th. The fundraising event has been organised to assist the family following the sudden death of Anne Healy in August and the organisers are seeking sponsorship through advertising from business people in the local area with a full-page advertisement in the programme for the night costing €100, a half page at €50 and a quarter-page at €25. A minute’s silence was observed at all of the North Kerry Championship matches last weekend in honour of the late Gus Cremins who had passed away the previous Thursday at the age of 93. Contact : 087-1330910 for further details. Mr Cremins from neighbouring Ballydonoghue was an iconic figure in North Kerry and was the oldest living holder of an All-Ireland Senior medal with Kerry as a member of the team who beat Roscommon in the replayed final of 1946. You can also make a donation to the fund through a Bank Account. The following are the details : Bank : Bank of Ireland Abbeyfeale, Sorting Code : 90-41-30, Account Number : 82913072, He was part of the Shannon Rangers team who won the county championship in 1945 and was named captain of the Kerry team the following year . Playing in every game including the drawn final, he was dropped in rather controversial circumstances for the replay but came on as a substitute to score the winning point. IBAN Number : IE89BOFI90413082913072 Swift Code : BOFIIE2D In the spring of 1947 playing with his beloved Ballydonoghue in a North Kerry League game, he broke his leg and missed the whole championship including the famous trip to the Polo Grounds as the Kerry team which included his great friends Mick Finnucane and the late Eddie Dowling, went down to Cavan. He took his place with Kerry again the following year but the defeat to Mayo in the All -Ireland semi-final was to be his last in green & gold. Deepest sympathies are extended to his wife, daughters, sons, grandchildren and extended family and friends. The Under 14 girls defeated Rathmore 23-22 in what was definitely the most exciting game so far this year on Sunday last . Wildcats started well with some fantastic scores from Donna O Rourke and held the lead at half time. Rathmore however, came out fighting in the 3rd quarter and managed to hold Wildcats scoreless while notching up 10 points themselves, but the home team were not to be outdone and in the 4th quarter they upped their game and got back into it and a super shot by Caoimhe Barry in the last 20 seconds secured a 1 point win. Pic by Marie Rohan The third year C.S.P.E students at St Josephs Secondary School organized a talk by Ms. Adi Roche which was held in the school on Wednesday last. A native of Clonmel, but living in Cork city, Adi Roche has spent her life, since 1977, campaigning for and publicly active in issues relating to the environment, peace and justice. Having worked for a number of years in Aer Lingus as an air stewardess, she took early redundancy to work full-time as a volunteer for the Irish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. A founder member of Chernobyl Children International, the organisation under her leadership, has delivered aid valued at over €96million and this has gone a long way to help those whose lives were destroyed by the Chernobly nuclear disaster April 1986. In 1990 she became the first Irish woman elected to the board of directors of the International Peace Bureau in Geneva and she stood as a coalition candidate for the Labour Party, Democratic Left and the Green Party in the 1997 Presidential Election, coming fourth out of five candidates with almost 7% of the vote. Ms Roche impressed all at St Josephs with her enthusiasm and her commitment in working to better the lives of those affected by the Chernobyl disaster in Belarus. 14 15 15 16 Nice plug for Kilcoolys Kilcoolys Country House received a nice publicity boost this week with a photograph in the November issue of American magazine Golf Digest. The picture (below) was taken on the front lawn of the hotel in mid-October when a group of injured US Veterans & Servicemen visited Ireland to play golf at some of our famous course including Ballybunion, Tralee, Dooks and Waterville. As they did on their previous visit in 2013 , the group arrived in Ballybunion early in the morning and had breakfast at the hotel before taking on our famous golf course and the story of their visit is one of the features in this month's issue of the popular golf magazine which has an estimated monthly readership of 1.6 million in the USA and another 1.7 world-wide.
