BINGO LAND Stories from the Real World & Cyberspace Special to the Bingo Bugle By Jeffrey Charboneau This month: Standard Grill hosts not so standard Bingo Manhattan Bingo Sunday night is Bingo night at the Standard Grill in Manhattan’s Standard High Line Hotel, which, as the hashtag #notyourstandardbingo suggests, is nothing like the scene in church halls and fraternal lodges. The New York Post reports that the Grill has made the game of chance an excuse for an all-out party, and an appealing option for young professionals looking to enhance their evening out. The Standard isn’t alone. New York City’s West Village restaurant Tortilla Flats has held Bingo nights for 30 years, giving winners shots of tequila and T-shirts. There are Bingo nights at Pete’s Candy Store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and at the Royal Palm’s Shuffleboard Club in Gowanus, Brooklyn, where drag queen Linda Simpson plays host—when she isn’t overseeing Le Bingo at Le Poisson Rouge. And rest assured Bingo really does happen, but includes music, dance breaks, danceoffs, celebrity visits, and lots of alcohol. To that end, the site posted a State Fair fashion photo essay, noting that T-shirts at the State Fair were “an interesting referendum on the public’s tastes, interests and general attitudes about life in Minnesota.” As a follow-up to the essay, the MinnPost created four online Bingo cards to reflect the year’s T-shirt trends at the fair. Examples included Star Wars Humor, Matching His & Hers, Beer Label Parody, and Family Reunion (Pre2010). Players were asked to make a note of what each specific T-shirt said and email a photo of their winning cards to MinnPost. Computerized Bingo Ars Technica has reported that the days of “do it on a computer” patents may finally be numbered—at least if a defendant is willing to last through an appeal. An opinion published by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld a lower court’s decision to invalidate two patents claiming to cover computerized Bingo. “Generally, the claims recite storing a player’s preferred sets of Bingo numbers; retrieving one such set upon demand, and playing that set; while simultaneously tracking the player’s sets, tracking player payments, and verifying winning numbers,” explained the threejudge panel. “Variants between the claims include display capabilities and options to purchase sets of Bingo numbers.” The case originated with a dispute between two competitors, Planet Bingo and Video King, both of which provide electronic Bingo services to casinos and other clients. Planet Bingo sued Video King over the patents, which the court found to be too abstract because Bingo management “consists solely of mental steps which can be carried out by a human using pen and paper.” Bingo Happenings Local Bingo Events & Great Specials We’re sorry to report we made an error in the October issue in the Silveridge Resort ad. No burglar came around and my $4.96 is secure in its little hiding place. The neighbors say no self-respecting burglar would bother to rob a house where the owner mows the grass only once a month. I didn’t walk off any decks or break any bones this year. I didn’t even have a slight cold, no surgeries and I am not pregnant. No drones flew over my house and I felt fairly safe going about my everyday affairs. I am thankful that I didn’t try out for Miss America again this year. Whatever happened to those beautiful white swimsuits we used to wear in the competitions? It’s cold in Atlantic City at this time of year. There were no lottery or Bingo winnings this year that I will have to lie to the IRS about. I didn’t fall back into the tobacco habit. So, as I count my blessings and enjoy my life, I ask our Father God to send peace, joy, and every blessing to all of our brothers and sisters around the world. For this I pray. There is a phrase in our language that usually denotes a word that is nasty or evil. That term is “four-letter word.” Well, when it comes to playing Bingo, I am sure we have all either heard or uttered some choice four-letter words over the years. It is not only the numbers on the card and the arrangement of the numbers, it’s the numbers called and the order in which they are called. Because of these layers of randomness, Bingo is about the purest, most-random game you can play. And, anyone who claims the “cards are stacked against them” in Bingo hasn’t done his or her research. That brings me back to that four-letter word, “luck.” It’s that simple. No magic potions, no special “system” for playing Bingo. It’s luck. I know that is hard to take for a lot of people. But, it’s that simple. Now, of course, there are some ways to slightly improve the odds. The most obvious is to buy additional cards. But, trust me, in some odd way, the more cards you have the more BAD cards you have. It works both ways, you know. When I play Bingo each Monday night, I play at a venue where everyone gets one card. Lucky Days: 2-21 Lucky Numbers: 3-63 Lucky Lotto News By Jeffrey Charboneau Compiled from internet news sources Lost Lotto A Long Island auto body shop owner found out that he has been driving around with nearly $3 million in his truck for weeks. Jerry Ritieni bought $20 worth of lottery tickets, but instead of putting them in his pocket as he normally does, he shoved them into the center console and forgot all about them. A month later, he was fishing around in his truck to find a set of keys and found the Lotto tickets. He brought them into his office at Extreme Auto Body Repairs in Massapequa, New York and looked up the numbers online. “I was going through my numbers one by one, circling each number that matched up,” Ritieni told The New York Post. “It took a minute for me to comprehend that I just hit the jackpot. I was like, ‘No way, no way! Holy s—t!’” Ritieni drove to a lottery office in Plainview, where workers confirmed he was the winner of $2.9 million— beating the 1-in-47 million odds. “I was completely shocked, I still am,” Ritieni said. “My jaw dropped to the ground.” Minnesota Multimillionaires A Minnesota couple who just won an $11.7 million lottery jackpot say their big plans to use the money include nothing “out of the ordinary,” with the wife even keeping her waitressing job. “I actually really enjoy my job,” newly minted multimillionaire Rhonda Meath said of her job waiting tables. “I have great friends here and a great boss, and it’s just really a fantastic place to work, so I have no plans of leaving,” she said. Meath, 51, and her husband, Joe Meath of Bethel, Minnesota, took home all of the $11.7 million because Hot Lotto pays the state and federal taxes, according to ABC affiliate KSTP-TV in Minneapolis-St. Paul. The Meaths said they will splurge on a new car but, other than that, plan to make some charitable contributions and keep their lives the same. “Have to still mow the grass and get mail and put grandkids on the school bus!” Rhonda Meath said. Winnings Benefit Store A man is $3 million richer after picking up a winning lottery ticket from an Arcata, California grocery store. Perry Scott bought the winning scratch off ticket at Ray’s Food Place in Arcata. Scott declined a media interview, but the word has spread quickly about his winnings. The $5 California Lucky Life scratch off ticket gave Scott has the option to receive $2,500 per week for the next 25 years, totaling $3.25 million dollars, or receive a lump sum of $1.9 million. Ray’s food place will also receive a special prize from the California Lottery. “The store gets a half a percent commission and so with an over $3 million ticket our commission will be in the neighborhood of $16,000,” Robert Parker, store manager at Ray’s Food Place, told the local NBC News affiliate. “It’s pretty exciting. BINGO BUGLE Phoenix November 2014 Bingo Challenge All in good fun, hopefully Last Saturday Kate and I were a little late getting to Bingo and so found our seats in the very first row in front of the caller. It turned out to be the “cane table” as three players with canes were already seated there and two more joined us straightaway. We introduced ourselves to the other players and readied for play. The first three games were unremarkable, but then the fun started. One “caner” challenged another’s Bingo and reached across to grab his card. It was apparent these elderly people all knew each other well, but I could not tell how lighthearted the challenge was. It seemed very serious at the time, but soon they were all laughing and clowning around. The challenged player’s card was good and we moved on to the next game. This time when someone at our table won, another “caner” leaped up and grabbed for his card. The winner was having none of it, however, and snatched his card out of reach. A floor worker arrived just in time to prevent a real problem, though they were certainly verbal. “You people have to calm down,” said the floor worker, “or I’ll have to ask you to leave.” “Leave!” challenged the noisiest one. “Why you can’t ask us to leave. The bus don’t come for another two hours. Besides you’d be lost without us.” “Well, just be quieter,” said the floor worker, beating a hasty retreat. We went on to the next game, a big H as well as a little h, when the fussing began again. Oldsters frequently have trouble with these double games, so I was preparing to help when Joe leaped up, grabbing his cane and yelling, “Bingo, by damn. I got a Bingo!” Ralph challenged him as predicted and a big fuss began. Then Joe leaned across the table putting most of his weight on his cane. Ralph knocked his cane out from under him and down he went amid much moaning and groaning. They helped him up and he seemed unhurt, but very angry about the insult to his dignity. “What’d you wanta go and do that for?” he yelled at Ralph. “Oh, you were just being too picky,” said Ralph. “I wanted to calm you down.” The head floor worker came over. “That’s your last chance,” she said. “Any more fussing and you two are both out of here.” The boys looked chagrined, but with grins lurking under their meek expressions. “Yes, Ma’am,” they both said. Soon we were on to the final game, an Indian star, one of my personal favorites and I thought it was about time I won one. We played a regular Bingo on the way, which was won by someone far away in the room. Then Ralph, Joe and I were all on at the same time and we each began chanting the number we wanted. “Come on 63,” said Ralph, “Daddy needs a new prosthesis. Come on.” I thought this interesting enough to almost lose my concentration when Joe started chanting, “Bring me 45. Bring me 45. I need a new walker.” But someone in the far part of the room won and I went away wondering how they would get along without the new prosthesis and walker they claimed they needed. Since she plays at this Bingo hall a lot, she has probably spent a lot more than she has won. The agents probably know her and her circumstances. Tipping is not an obligation; in fact she did not have to tip at all. Tipping has become a form of extortion and should not be expected. Other countries do not tip in such large amounts; some countries do not tip at all. Tipping is a sore spot with many people. Since most tips are pooled and divided among all agents, the customer is contributing to the wealth of some unknown entity who does not pay the employees enough because their wages are expected to be paid partly by tips. —A Texas Player, via email Dear Aunt Bingo, I have worked in the Bingo Department of Las Vegas casinos for most of my adult life. I don’t have any knowledge about any other places. Every place that I have worked the Bingo crew was very grateful for every tip we received whether big or small. We realize tipping is optional and anyone applying pressure on a patron to tip would not be employed long where I have worked. The Bingo crews make this look like a fun job and it can be, but you earn every dollar. We work most of the day on our feet. We must be exact in our money transactions both in and out. We perform our duties in a high-pressure environment while projecting a fun and happy attitude to our patrons. This is an entertainment business and in LV the patrons have many places to choose from. We get to know and love our regular customers and help new people to figure out what to do so they can enjoy their experience. The tips we receive enable us to support our families and maintain our homes. They certainly don’t make any of us rich. The bottom line is this…if you feel good about tipping, please do so and we are grateful. If you don’t care to tip, don’t. We’ll be glad you came to our place to play, regardless. Starts at 48 #'s and will increase by 1 number each week until hit. – $150 Consolation – YS A week • PLAYinG 3 DAYS A 3 DA Dear Aunt Bingo, As Bingo players here in Las Vegas for the last 20 plus years, the following is a breakdown of Bingo costs and tipping. Bingo began here in the ’90s with a choice of $3, $4, $7 and $9 packets. No extras! This often allowed patrons to play more than one session per day. Today, Bingo can be costly—with electronic Bingo at an added fee of $2-$3 depending on the type of electronic chosen and all the added jackpots, each requiring $l-$2 extra per packet for validation and the dollar increase of each packet price. Also, with the increased amount of packets purchased in the machine and allowed, winning has become more difficult. As for tipping, here is a typical scenario: Player spends $30 for the game. Played and lost five to six previous games played. Then a $50 win occurs. Breakdown: $50 win minus $30 cost = $20 net. With that win, if you give the attendant $1 it’s 5% of the net win. That’s reality. The casinos should compensate their attendants with the profits they make from Bingo. Bingo for us is our entertainment, and we tip whatever we can and feel is reasonable. —MD, Las Vegas, via email $1,000 COVERALL JACKPOT BASELINE In this month’s column we’re wrapping up our conversation on tipping at Bingo. I want to thank all the players and workers who took the time to weigh in on the subject. It is always gratifying here at the Bingo Bugle when we are able to generate lively discussion that explores multiple sides of a gaming issue. I hope you found these letters engaging and informative. I certainly did! —Aunt Bingo Tuesday Games Start at 6:45 pm Admission Pac $10 eek • PLAYinG 3 DAYS A week •PLAYinG Some Final Words on Tipping Dear Aunt Bingo, I am a Bingo agent in Las Vegas and would like to respond to the $20 tip issue. First of all, to the person that said we don’t offer a service to our customers, our entire job is customer service. We explain the procedure and our packets, we give advice on the best buy-in for the customer’s price range, we sell the packets, we assist on the floor when people need it, we verify their Bingos and bring them money, and we daub players’ cards when they have to go to the bathroom. I have also worked at places where we had to clean up their trash, wash tables and clean ashtrays between sessions. If that’s not serving the customer, I don’t know what is. A Bingo agent starts out at minimum wage and on-call until a full time position becomes available. (This could take years!) Most rooms have three or four on-call agents which means the bottom agent may get as few as eight hours a month. We can’t get another job because we need to be available for Bingo. The going rate for a Bingo tip is 10%. (Waitresses are up to 15-20% now.) That means if you win $50 a good tip would be $5. We seldom get that; we are lucky to get 1-3%. If we have a lot of new players, we often get nothing. Tips are gratuities and while we rely on them we never expect them and are grateful for any amount we get. The agent was wrong to make the winner feel bad about her tip of $20 and hopefully was reprimanded. Bottom line: If you received good service its only right to give a tip. A lot of us in Las Vegas make our living from tips. Imagine how it would be if players had to go to the cage to get their own payouts while the game continued. An added note: If you are struggling to make ends meet and a $5 tip is going to break you, maybe you shouldn’t be gambling in the first place. —Bingo Agent, Las Vegas, via email Cards on Sale 12:15 pm - 12:45 pm PROGRESSIVE COVERALL EACH SESSION Come on down, we have a lot of fun! My next door neighbor, who’s 79, recently had her identity stolen and I want to make sure it doesn’t happen to me. Cautious Connie Dear Connie, Identity theft continues to be a big problem in the U.S., affecting around nine million people every year—many of who are seniors. Identity theft occurs when someone gets access to your Social Security number (SSN), bank or credit card account number, or other identifying information and uses it to steal from you. While there’s no ironclad protection against ID theft, here are some things you can do to minimize your risks. Guard your SSN: Treat your SSN like your most prized possession. Never carry your Social Security card around in your wallet or purse, don’t write your SSN on checks (except those you send to the IRS), and never give your SSN, credit card number, checking or savings account numbers to strangers who call, visit, text, or send e-mail messages to you even if they seem legitimate. And, don’t carry around your Medicare card either unless you’re going to the doctor. Your Medicare card contains your SSN. Be wary of emails: If you use the Internet, don’t trust emails that claim to be from the Social Security Administration, the IRS or other government agencies. Also be leery of emails that look like they’re from your bank, telephone company or credit card company. Remember that only phony e-mails will ask for your credit card number or SSN. For more Internet fraud tips including a list of common online scams see onguardonline.gov. Secure your mail: Empty your mailbox quickly, or consider getting a P.O. Box or buy a locked mailbox to deter thieves. Also, don’t leave outgoing mail in your mailbox. To put a stop to prescreened credit card offers that thieves look to intercept, use the consumer credit reporting industry opt-out service at optoutprescreen.com or call 888-567-8688—they will ask for your SSN and date of birth. Destroy your trash: Buy a cross-cut paper shredder and shred all records, receipts, statements, preapproved credit offers, mail solicitations or other papers you throw out that has your financial or personal information. Monitor your accounts: Review your monthly bank and credit card statements carefully, and see if your bank or creditcard issuer offers free alerts that will warn you of suspicious activity as soon as it’s detected. If they do, sign up for them. Watch your credit: Check your credit report at annualcreditreport.com or call 877-322-8228. You can receive one free report a year from each of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion), so consider staggering your request so you can get one free copy every four months. Set up security freezes: You can help protect yourself by setting up a security freeze on your credit reports at all three credit bureaus—Equifax (equifax.com, 800-685-1111), Experian (experian.com, 888-397-3742) and TransUnion (transunion.com, 877-322-8228). With a freeze in place, no one, including you, can open new lines of credit in your name. This typically costs $5 to $10 per person per credit bureau each time you freeze or thaw your credit report. Some states offer free freezes for ID-theft victims. Take action: If you ever think your identity’s been stolen, immediately contact your creditors and financial institutions to report unauthorized charges or debts, and close any compromised accounts. Then place fraud alerts and security freezes with the three credit reporting agencies, and file a report with your local police and with the Federal Trade Commission at ftccomplaintassistant.gov or 877-438-4338. Savvy tips: For more tips on preventing identity theft visit idtheftinfo.org and idtheftcenter.org. You can also hire an identity theft protection service like ProtectMyID, LifeLock or TrustedID to keep tabs on your identity for you. These companies typically charge around $10 to $20 per month, but the services they provide are typically no better than what you can do yourself by following the previously listed tips. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of The Savvy Senior book. Bill Cosby Returning to TV? Q: We watched Lone Survivor last night on DVD, and the actor who played the new guy that they were giving a hard time looked familiar to me. What else has he been in? —Amelia D., via email A: Alexander Ludwig, who played newbie Navy SEAL Shane Patton, is perhaps best known for playing Cato, the career tribute from District 2 in The Hunger Games. He’ll also play Bjorn (Ironside) Lothbrok— Ragnar and Lagertha’s now-grown son—in the upcoming season of the History channel’s Vikings, which likely will air in spring 2015. Q: I love Bill Cosby’s comedy. Does he have plans to return to TV? —Robert M., via email A: NBC announced at the Television Critics Association tour this summer that it was developing a comedy for Bill Cosby, which could premiere as early as summer 2015. The series is described as a “multi-camera, classic extended-family sitcom,” with Bill as the patriarch. Q: Like the rest of the world, I was shocked and heartbroken to hear about Robin Williams’ suicide. I know he was working on some movies before his death. Will any be released posthumously? —Kelli F., via email A: The consummate funnyman with a heart as big as his funny bone left this world way too soon, as I’m sure we all can agree. He did leave behind four movies that have yet to be released: Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Merry Friggin’ Christmas, Boulevard and Absolutely Anything. The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the Veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation. —George Washington My Uncle John was a veteran of WWII; my cousin Gene served in Vietnam. Although they served decades apart they had one thing in common. Neither ever talked of his war time experiences. I never probed, respecting their right to silence and respecting them for serving their country in time of need. Tuesday, November 11, is National Veterans Day and it honors the service of all U.S. military veterans; not to be confused with Memorial Day—which honors those military who died while serving their country. Veterans Day, every November 11th, became a legal holiday in 1954. If that date happens to be on a Saturday or Sunday, then organizations that observe the holiday will normally be closed on the adjacent Friday or Monday, respectively. Our country’s first army was created on June 14, 1775, to fight the British for our independence during the Revolutionary War. George Washington was its commander. The flintlock muskets the colonists used for shooting at the British weighed ten pounds each and were five feet long. After the Revolution ended, disabled veterans were given a government pension. The other veterans were disbanded and given land because of a distrust of a trained standing army. This didn’t last long however because of continuing conflicts with Native Americans. A new standing army, the Legion of the United States, was formed but its name was changed to the United States Army in 1796 and it remains that today. Since this is the month when we celebrate Thanksgiving Day, perhaps we should take a moment to thank those whose every day jobs are to protect us and our country. Remember them in your prayers as well as those who have previously served and those who have died striving to keep our country safe. To show your thanks in a tangible way, take a veteran or someone still on active duty to Bingo with you. Pay for their cards and snacks and when they say, “Thank you.” Reply, “No, I want to thank YOU!” And speaking of Thanksgiving, I would like to once again thank my Bingo Bugle family, especially Tara Snowden and Dick Bajai. Thank you to all the Bingo workers and managers who are the ones who make it possible for us to play our favorite game. Thank you to my wonderful husband, Robert, for his unconditional support for close to forty years. If people get too chatty and it’s hard to hear, it’s good to have a manager who will get things quieted down. If you have unruly people bothering everyone, God bless the manager with the guts to stand up to them and make them leave. For other issues, I would befriend one of the junior volunteers you can talk to who hopefully will have the boss’s ear and can bring up issues in a way that he will listen to. I’m sure the workers have meetings from time to time when they get their assignments and any news the manager needs to share. With luck, in that kind of environment he is more relaxed and open to topics his fellow volunteers want to discuss on behalf of players. —Tom, Ft. Myers, Florida Hi Tom, I like how you think: If you can’t deal with the “general,” use the chain of command to your advantage by befriending one of his lieutenants. I’m sure the other workers want to keep him as calm as the players do. —Guy Hi Guy, You ran a letter in your column from a player who was getting stressed out by a hall manager who “yells” a lot and is very strict about how his Bingo operates and the players behave. The player asked what to do about this “problem.” My answer is: Send this guy to us! We have the complete opposite problem. Our Bingo manager is very casual about everything—she isn’t concerned if it’s noisy, or the caller is slow, or how many players show up. Don’t get me wrong. She isn’t lazy. She works very hard. But she kind of lets the games go however they go and doesn’t pay much attention from the back room where’s she’s always working. We’ve had games with so many people talking you could barely hear the caller. We’ve had games start 30 minutes late because the lines got so backed up from people buying paper and chatting with the workers. I would MUCH rather have a manager cracking the whip and keeping things in line and on schedule! —LV, California, via email Hi LV, I was glad to receive your letter because it illustrates that old saying: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” In other words, what one person finds useless or a problem, another will find valuable and just what they need. Like you, I too prefer a hall that is run efficiently by a firm manager. I am not a fan of yelling or of someone who throws adult tantrums. But I do like a manager who nips problems in the bud and makes it clear that if players in their hall want to cause trouble, they will soon find themselves on the other side of the door. —Guy Hey guys! (And gals!) Write to: Guy’s Turn c/o The Bingo Bugle, P.O. Box 527, Vashon, Washington 98070, or e-mail Guy directly at [email protected]. BINGO BUGLE Phoenix November 2014 17 " Some of the recent winners at riverboat Bin go" Was $1 million beat the worst in poker history? By Chad Holloway Three years ago, Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Lalibert announced the creation of the $1 million buy-in “Big One for One Drop”—the most expensive tournament buy-in in poker history—to be held at the 2012 World Series of Poker. The tournament proved tremendously successful, as 48 poker pros and philanthropic businessmen came together and raised more than $5.5 million for charity. As such, an encore was organized for the 2014 WSOP. This year’s follow-up tournament, which attracted 42 players and raised an additional $4.7 million for The One Drop Foundation, played out in late June and aired on ESPN a month later. On one of the broadcasts, viewers witnessed a hand that members of the mainstream media quickly dubbed “the worst bad beat you will see in poker” and “worst tournament beat ever.” The hand that caused such a ruckus took place on Level 13 (50,000-100,000 blinds with a 10,000 ante), when there were just three tables left in the tournament. Two of the players still in contention were Connor Drinan, who had qualified via a $25,000 satellite, and college-loan magnate Cary Katz. The infamous hand began when Katz raised to 225,000 from under the gun position. Drinan, a young and accomplished player, reraised to 580,000 from the big blind. Katz responded with a four-bet to 2 million. Drinan moved all in, and Katz made the call with the bigger stack. Drinan tabled the Ad-Ac, and Katz also turned over pocket aces with the As-Ah. The two players would chop the pot 95.65 percent of the time, and the only way one of them could win outright would be if the board “four-flushed,” meaning four cards of the same suit ran out. The 2d-Kh-5h flop gave Katz a freeroll to the hearts, and wouldn’t you know it, the 4h on the turn suddenly made it a very real possibility. “I feel like it might [come],” said Antonio Esfandiari, the winner of the inaugural Big One for One Drop. Katz joked that he had some of that “Esfandiari luck,” and then the dealer quietly burned and put out the 2h, which completed the flush and sent shockwaves through the crowd. Drinan, the unfortunate victim, was understandably speechless. A day later, Katz would finish in eighth place, good for just over $1.3 million. Daniel Colman won the tournament and walked away with more than $15.3 million. Whether or not this stunning hand was the worst beat in poker history is debatable, but what happened to Drinan was unquestionably nightmarish. “Connor Drinan just became the answer to a wicked poker trivia question,” ESPN commentator Lon McEachern said at the conclusion of the hand. “That is brutal. That might be the worst beat in the history of tournament poker.” For two players to be dealt pocket aces is exceedingly rare, and to have such a hand end in anything but a chop is also extremely rare. To have this combination of rarities occur in a tournament with the world’s biggest buy-in…well, it certainly made for a memorable moment. SNOWFLAKE ANSWERS BINGO BUGLE Phoenix November 2014 Blackjack tools Improving your game There are many good tools on the Internet that blackjack players can use to improve their game. Moreover, they are all FREE. Below is a summary of some of the better ones. Blackjack Strategy Engine You can generate a blackjack strategy table (in color or black and white) from any set of playing rules (and number of decks) by using the Blackjack Strategy Engine at www.blackjackinfo.com. You simply use the drop down menu to select the number of decks and then check the rules that interest you (from a list of playing rules), then just click the “Get The Strategy” button and within seconds you will have an accurate strategy chart that you can print. Blackjack Strategy Calculator This calculator (http://wizardofodds. com/games/blackjack/strategy/calculator/) will also generate a basic strategy chart (in color) for any number of decks and playing rules. You simply use the drop menu to select the number of decks and rules and the calculator will generate a strategy chart. Blackjack House Edge Calculator If you go to http://wizardofodds.com/ games/blackjack/calculator/, you’ll find a tool that allows you to input any set of playing rules and the calculator will generate the “optimal” and “realistic” house edge, assuming you use the correct basic playing strategy. (The optimal house edge is based on perfect composition dependent strategy and the dealer shuffling after every hand, whereas the realistic house edge is based on total dependent basic strategy, and the use of a cut card.) Basic Strategy Trainer The Blackjack Strategy Trainer is a free blackjack game that will teach you while you play. You select the exact rules that you want, and the “Strategy Coach” will warn if you make a basic strategy mistake. (You can also turn off the Coach, if you prefer.) Available at http://www.blackjackinfo. com/bst/ Hit or Stand.net This site (www.hitorstand.net) contains a free blackjack game and trainer that teaches you blackjack strategy while you play. The goal of the game is to make a high percentage of correct moves. There are two modes of play (easy and difficult). Gamemaster’s Blackjack School Located at http://www.gamemasteronline.com/BlackjackContent.shtml, you’ll find 24 lessons that will take you systematically through the process of learning how to play each hand properly, how to count cards, how and when to properly bet, and literally hundreds of other “tricks of the trade.” Blackjack Tournaments For a listing of major (and minor) blackjack tournaments throughout the USA, check out www.blackjacktournaments. com. There are several other web sites that contain good information for blackjack players, although they are not free. I’m going to shamelessly recommend my Blackjack Insider e-Newsletter that is emailed to subscribers every month. Each issue contains articles by paid reporters that cover up-to-date playing conditions in different parts of the USA, information on basic strategy, card counting, tournaments, plus articles on video poker and craps. You can receive three free issues of the Blackjack Insider that will be emailed to you by going to www.bjinsider.com/freetrial. The second great source of information for blackjack players is at www.bj21.com. There you will find Current Blackjack News, a detailed monthly compilation of playing conditions in casinos throughout the USA, plus message boards where semipro and professional card counters will post (and answer questions from posters on all aspects of blackjack and card counting). Why not take advantage of all of this information that is available to you in a click of the mouse. You’ll become a better player by doing so.
