PE WEEK 2014: STAFF V STUDENTS SHOWDOWNS AN ENTERTAINING DISPLAY
National PE Week was celebrated
at Gleeson College last week, with
highlights being the Staff versus
Students Netball and Soccer
Showdowns and Middle School
10-Pin Bowling!
All Middle School students were
provided the opportunity to
participate in a session of 10-Pin
Bowling at the Village Bowl on either
Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
Congratulations to Hughes Year 9
students’ Brandon and Kelly Holl
(both 9 HMCIB) for leading all male
and female scorers on the day, with
only one point separating them both!
The lunchtime team challenges
again included Staff versus Student
Showdowns of Soccer and Netball,
with some very exciting and close
games played. Congratulations to
those students who took up the
opportunity to have some fun and
play against the staff. Our staff
actually look forward to it just as
much as the students do, and I
can tell you that there were some
very sore, aging bodies after both
games! The support from students
spectating was fantastic and the
spirit with which the games were
played was a credit to all.

WORKING TOGETHER = SUCCESS
we teach), allowing students more say in
their learning journey and the possibility
of rethinking the way the school day is
organised to allow for greater flexibility.
These challenges have already been
articulated in our school Annual Strategic
Implementation Plan for 2015 and will be
the key areas of work for the Leadership
Team and staff next year.
DISA Survey Results
Thank you to all parents and students
who completed this survey in Term 3.
I am very pleased to be able to share
with you some of the findings from this
survey beginning with the fact that it
provided an overwhelming affirmation
that Gleeson College is a great school! We
already knew this, but it was important
that we heard from each of the key
stakeholders in the education partnership
with students, parents and staff all having
the opportunity to have their say. The
survey also presented us with a number
of challenges and recommendations to
consider. As Principal of Gleeson College
I have to say I was delighted with this
report. It affirmed much of what we
believe about the College.
There was much to celebrate in the
findings. The report identified that
parents have high levels of satisfaction
with student achievement, student
well-being, teachers’ professionalism,
community support for the school and
the schools capacity for sustainable
progress. The strengths of the school
that parents identified included the
fact that community cohesiveness is
overwhelmingly positive and that teacher
and parents work together in order for
students to achieve their best results.
Students reported that their teachers
and parents hold high expectations for
their achievement. Staff overwhelmingly
endorsed
the
positive
working
relationships that exist in the school.
There were also some areas identified
for us to continue to work on and some
challenges presented which is great as
it allow us the opportunity to strive to
improve. The key challenges included
the need for more work on developing a
school wide approach to pedagogy (how
I would like to take this opportunity
to thank all members of the Gleeson
College community that contributed
to this survey. It has been an extremely
worthwhile process and one that is crucial
in our goal of continuous improvement at
Gleeson College.
College Board 2015
Last week we held the College Board
Annual General Meeting. There was
a great level of attendance, with an
excellent meeting and we were very
fortunate to have four new members join
the College Board for 2015. These people
are Vera Ierace, Michelle Sauerwald,
Peter Stewart and Jorge Morales.
Each of our new members spoke briefly
about their background and reasons
for joining the Board and the strong
message that resonated with each was
that Gleeson College had been such a
positive experience for their children
that they wanted to serve the school in
this capacity. Each new Board member
brings a wealth of experience, gifts and
talents and we are very excited about
their future contribution to the Board
and thank them sincerely for agreeing to
serve our community in this role.
The AGM was also Mr John Garvey’s
final meeting as Chair of the Board due
to his retirement following six years in
this capacity, and seven years in total as
a member of the Board. I am sure that
you will agree that this is an outstanding
contribution to the College community
and one that we will more formally
recognise at the end of the year. Mr Bill
Hancock also has retired following six
years of dedicated service also. Thank
you sincerely to both John and Bill for
their service to the Gleeson College
community.
New office bearers for the College Board
will be elected in two weeks’ time at the
Board Changeover Dinner and meeting,
and we look excitedly to the future of
our school under the guidance and
stewardship of this group.
Mr Andrew Baker,
Principal
WITH SYMPATHY
We offer our deepest sympathy to
Joshua Ladegourdie (8 HMGIL) whose
maternal grandfather passed away
recently, and also to Christopher
Wilkinson (11 FSMIL) on the recent
passing of his paternal grandfather.
Our College Community will keep the
Ladegourdie and Wilkinson families
in our prayers at this sad time.
Rest in Peace

YEAR 7 TRANSITION DAYS, PARENT INFORMATION EVENING & BBQ
Gleeson College was very pleased to
welcome the parents and families of our
incoming Year 8 students for 2015 at a
Parent Information Evening and BBQ on
Monday 17 November.
The evening was the culmination of
our Year 7 Transition Program, which
consisted of two Transition Days in Week
5 leading up to the event. These were
conducted on Tuesday 11 November and
Thursday 13 November respectively. Year
7 students from various primary schools
arrived at Gleeson on their allocated
day and participated in a variety of
activities, including a tour of the facilities,
orientation and House shirt sizing with
their new House Coordinator. Students
also attended a series of talks that were
led by subject teachers from the Arts,
Home Economics, Sports, HPV (Pedal
Prix), Religious Education and Flexible
Learning areas.
The Parent Information Evening included
a presentation in the Dame Roma
Mitchell Centre before parents, students
and College Staff had the opportunity to
meet and mingle in Mary’s Courtyard,
with a delicious BBQ provided by our
Parents and Friends Committee.
The presentation was hosted by our
Middle School Leaders for 2015, who are
to be commended for their professional
performance and enthusiastic attitude. A
huge thank you is extended to our P&F
Committee, as well as Middle School
Leaders and College Staff, who assisted
with the organisation and running of the
evening.
It was a wonderful success and a fantastic
celebration of what Gleeson College has
to offer our community.

YEAR 8 EX-L STUDENTS EXPLORE DIGITAL MEDIA PLATFORMS AT THE ABC
It was with some trepidation that
our Year 8 Ex-L students entered
the towering eight-story building on
North East Road to tour the ABC and
its facilities recently. However, we
were quickly put at ease by our very
friendly guides and security guards…
as well as B1 and B2!
Our first visit was to the production
desk of ABC Adelaide News and ABC3
News. Confronted by hundreds of
switches and buttons we were amazed
that the entire News Service is filmed
by robotic cameras and that there are
only four people engaged in the nightly
production of the News. Students had
an opportunity to read an autocue
whilst presenting the news.
Next was Classical FM where Stephen
spoke of his passion for Classical music
and the 18 hours each week he takes to
put together a two-hour presentation,
which is heard around the world
on the Internet and nationally each
Sunday evening.
The Country Hour and Landline studios
and offices were next, followed by a
quick visit to the Master studio that
“controls time”. In essence, programs
around the world are produced and
arrive by satellite at ABC Adelaide,
where they essentially are cued to
occur in Adelaide time!
As we continued to walk down various
corridors we could not help but notice
the number of journalists in offices
discussing the day’s news and how it
might be presented.
Finally it was Behind the News (BTN) - a
program much loved by primary school
students across Australia. Here we
met Nathan and Sarah whose friendly
and welcoming smiles encouraged
us to be filmed discussing Climate
Control and our views on Halloween.
It was then back to the Boardroom to
watch a short video on the production
of BTN. A great, informative day was
had by all.
A special thanks to Mr Richard Milne
for organising this event.

‘IT’S BEGINNING TO FEEL A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS!’
“Miss Feleppa’s Year 11 Food & Hospitality
Class held a High Tea function for special
guests, including family, friends and staff
on Friday 14 November.
We were required to be out of class for the
whole day, preparing food and working
together in anticipation of the arrival of
our guests. The aim of this High Tea was
to produce delicious food and show off
our cooking skills learnt over the semester
by Miss Feleppa. We first of all had to
decorate the room in a Christmas theme
and prepare the many fresh foods to be
served, such as the Warm Prawn Skewers,
Coconut Chicken Cups and Nutella Balls.
In the lead up to the event, the class was
separated into smaller groups based on
interests and skills. Each ‘mini’ group
chose 2-4 recipes to trial, and as a class
we narrowed down a range of recipes that
were best suited. This was a very valuable
process as it ensured the success and
effectiveness of our Christmas themed High
Tea. We were also each in charge of other
areas planning for the event. For example,
along with Chelsea, I was in charge of the
name tags for both the guests and class,
and also the pumpkin and spinach frittata
and chocolate cups in the kitchen.”
Hayley Fieldhouse (11 DSBRO)
“It was a tough crowd to please, made up
of mostly family, friends and staff, however
our guests enjoyed themselves and we
were complimented on the service and the
delicious food which was provided.
It was a very enjoyable day and the hard
work we all put in to prepare for the event
paid off!! Our Christmas themed High Tea
was a success!”
Jordan May (11 DSAKN)
“By holding this function and completing
this assignment we all experienced what
it’s like to be in a catering business.
It brought us a challenge, but as a team
we worked extremely well together, had
fun and had great team spirit throughout
the assignment.”
Antonette Rugari (11 FSMIL)
I couldn’t be more proud of each student
in the class and their individual effort.
They each contributed to all aspects of

the planning and helped to make the
function absolutely amazing! I must also
mention that noticing the class’s high
organisational skills and confidence in
the kitchen early on in the semester, they
were challenged to make the majority
of the recipes fresh on the day which
pushed time limits, but the pressure did
not get to the girls! Outstanding effort!
We now look forward to Food and
Hospitality next year!

Each student contributed their own
jigsaw piece, which when joined together
created this amazing image with the

> Tuna & Sweet Potato
Fritters
Recipe Legend:
C = Cup | T = Tablespoon | t = teaspoon
Makes 20 fritters
Ingredients:
1kg (approx) sweet potato, cubed & dry
roasted
1 large tin of tuna in oil (425g), drained
6 spring onions stems, finely sliced
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 zucchini, grated
1T garlic and herb salt seasoning (or
something similar that you like)
1 egg
Rice bran oil or coconut oil for cooking
At Sprout.Ed we always say the easiest
way to ensure a week full of delicious
and nutritious food is to be well
prepared! This week I am sharing how
I get prepared for the week ahead…
Method:
1. Preheat oven to 200*C and line a
large baking tray.
2. Wash sweet potato and chop into
1-2cm cubes, place on baking tray
and dry roast (no oil) for 20 mins, or
until soft and lightly browning.
3. In the meantime, prepare garlic,
spring onion and zucchini and
combine in a large bowl with egg,
tuna and garlic and herb seasoning.
4. When sweet potato is cooked add it
to the bowl and mash together with
other ingredients.
5. Heat some oil in a large pan, spoon
heaped tblspns of mixture into the
pan and flatten into a patty shape,
cook for a couple of minutes each
side, or until golden. Repeat until all
mixture is cooked.
Tips:
Freezes really well, just ensure you use
baking paper if layering the fritters for
storage. These are an excellent ‘lunchbox’
lunch, just serve with salad or in a wrap.
Sprout.Ed Blog Address:
http://sprouteducation.wordpress.com/
Here are the 5 steps I follow:
1. What’s on this week? – Think about what is on to ensure I don’t over buy
and waste food and avoid under-buying and the temptation of last minute
processed meals.
2. What do I/we feel like this week? – Listen to your body! For example, sometimes
I really feel like salmon and I know my body must need the nutrients it contains
so I include it that week.
3. Make sure there is balance – I like to ensure there is one meal that contains
chicken, one using fish, one with red meat, one vegetarian dish and something I
can make in bulk, freeze and have later in the week as a ‘night off’ from cooking.
4. Write a menu plan – Write up ‘what is on the menu’ for the week and stick to it.
5. Write a shopping list – Write a list and do a big shop once a week.
