We are counting on your commitment to support our parish’s ministry. The Financial Council from each parish will assist me (as your Pastor) to work on the budget according to the information you have provided (your commitment) for the year to come. I meet with the Financial Council each month to review the financial support received from you, so we can determine whether we have sufficient support to carry on with the operation that we have planned to do or reduce/cease the ministry or organization that we have (due to insufficient support received), so we can have a balanced budget. I met with the Financial Council of Sacred Heart Parish last Wednesday to finalize their budget for this year. Sacred Heart has a major project of demolishing the old school building and needs to find a way to build a new building in its place for our parish activities. So, I encourage those who have not completed a commitment card for your stewardship to support our parish to please complete one and return it to the parish office or you can drop it in the collection basket when you attend weekend Masses, so we have this information to plan on all the different events for our parish throughout the year which is made possible by having a good budget to support them. We are very happy to assist the Vocation Office to host the event to have Archbishop Peter at St. John of the Woods’ Church’s Hall last Saturday to have a meal with parents of seminarians to thank them for encouraging their sons to respond to God’s call to the priesthood vocation. Father Bryan D. is the vocation director who organized this Thanksgiving event (having Archbishop and parents of seminarians gather for this wonderful event in our parish hall). We thank you for your prayers for vocations and for supporting seminarians who come to be with us for the summer. They enjoy the time they are with us each summer. We sent out a Thank You letter to those who have turned in their commitment card and a follow up letter to those who have not yet done so, to ask them to participate in the Sacrificial Giving to support our parish ministries. You do not want your parish office to spend unnecessary cost on postal stamps and to have to keep sending out a reminder letter to your home to ask you to make a commitment. So, please fill in a commitment card on what you can support your parish with for this year and return it to the parish office or place it in the collection basket. We need your information and your commitment to do God’s work to serve you and others. The annual report for each parish is posted on our regional parishes’ website for those who have not received this information sent to your home or do not attend regular Sunday Masses. The parish office needs you to update your home address so we can send information to your home. We are trying to post information about our parishes’ activities on our website. We also have all the presentation from the Stewardship or/and the Sacrificial Giving Campaign posted. Please check in with the parish’s events and information on its website so you can join us and be active with your parish life. We met with the parish leadership at Sacred Heart’s Church with the Fund Raising and Building Committees to discuss the progress on the project of the old school building. I have asked the parish secretary to share this project’s progress on the parish bulletin and website, so you know what is going on with it. As you know, we heavily depend on our parish volunteers and others (i.e. construction company and the City of Tacoma) to support us to work on this project. This project requires all of us to be involved to make it possible, so your participation is very important. It is a dream, which can become reality for all of us who believe and make it happen. There will be a lot of work being done at end of this month around the parking lot, so we ask you to be patient and support what is being done. We met with the parish leadership at St. John of the Woods’ Church. We are working on the project of installing some lights and carpet in two rooms in the second floor of the old rectory, which is the parish office at this time. We will be hosting seminarians who will be with us for their summer school and to obtain some parish ministry experience in our regional parishes. We want to provide a warm and welcoming place for them, so they can have a good experience with us. I also need to have a warm and welcoming office to welcome you when you come to meet with your Pastor and your priest who serves you. We thank you for your continued support of your parish. We also met with the parish leadership at St. Ann’s Church to hear the report on the transition of the use of the parish old school building. We had shared this building with the Catholic Community Services (CCS) for a number of years and they have relocated to a new location (they are now called the Catholic Authority Network Services). We are using the old school building for our parish’s ministries and activities. There are many different groups and organizations using it also at this time. Our volunteers have assisted us to clean it and we are working on the budget to make sure this building will be well maintained. We thank all different parish ministries and groups for their patience in working with the transition team. We are all volunteers, so we can only assist with the limited time that we have on various projects. You are welcome to assist us in the area that you are able to help. We deeply appreciate you on what you can offer to the parish. Your engagement and participation in the parish ministry and activity is very important for your parish. Thank you for your commitment and your support to our parish. May the Lord continue to bless upon you and your family! Happy Thanksgiving Day to your family. Please come to join us for the Thanksgiving Mass to Thank God for God’s entire blessing to us and our country! Sincerely, Yours in Christ, Fr. Tuan Nguyen, D. Dear Father Tuan: Thank you very much for the nice blessing you gave us during our last Mass at St. John of the Woods - we truly appreciate it! We also appreciated the several years we were parishioners at St. John of the Woods. And a big part of our appreciation was the chance to have you as the Pastor. You are a genuinely nice person and are a very hard worker. We were regularly amazed at the schedule you have to maintain for St. John of the Woods and the other regional parishes. We also appreciated how welcoming you were to all our Guide Dog puppies. In appreciation for all that you have done for us and St. John of the Woods. You are truly a blessing from God. Thanks again for everything! Sincerely, Herb & Sherry Brooks St. Ann’s students are practicing on Saturdays from 1:00 to 3:00PM. SJOW students practice on Saturdays from 11 to 1PM. We are grateful to the students for taking part and bringing joy to the people in our parish by making this program possible. All children are welcomed to come. Contact: Sr. Theresa 592-2541 2 Regional Center Our Treasured Tradition . . . Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament (In Church Only) Mortal versus Venial Sin ST. ANN: 8:30am - 7:00pm Thursdays 5pm - 7pm Tuesdays Divine Mercy & Mass (Samoan Comm.) 7:00pm Fridays Mass (Vietnamese Language) by Barbara & Clarence Leingang The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines the difference between Mortal and Venial sin. Mortal sin is a grave infraction of the law of God that destroys the divine life in the soul of the sinner (Sanctifying Grace), constituting a turning away from God. Venial sin is a sin which does not destroy the divine life in the soul, as does mortal sin, though it diminishes and wounds it. Mortal sin is the knowing and willful violation of God’s law in a serious matter; for example: idolatry, adultery, murder, and slander. This sin can be both interior (choice of the will alone) or exterior (choice of the will carried into action). Mortal means the “spiritual” death of the soul or separation from God. Grace or the supernatural life is lost and if we die without repenting we will lose God for eternity. Our hearts can be turned back to Him by receiving the sacrament of Penance. Catholics cannot receive Communion if they have unconfessed Mortal sins. Venial sins are “slight” sins. They involve disobedience of the law of God in venial matters. Sometimes a person may have committed a venial sin without reflection or under force of habit. Thus, not fully intending the action or sin, their guilt before God is reduced. For sin to be mortal it must be a 1. Serious matter, 2. The person must know it is serious and 3. Free consent of the will to commit it. Both categories of sin are mentioned in Sacred Scripture. In the OT there were categories that merited the death penalty and sins that could be expiated by an offering. This gave foundation to the NT in which these material categories are replaced by spiritual ones. As Catholics we are encouraged to pray daily for forgiveness of our daily faults. Refer to Mt 6:12; Proverbs 24:16; 1 Cor. 6:9-10.References: Catechism of the Catholic Church (1855,1857,1862) EWTN website ST. Regional Center God Gives it All and then Calls Us to Share We deeply appreciate you for returning your commitment card to support our parishes with your financial support. We thank you for responding to the parish and supporting her mission. We thank the Stewardship Committee for assisting us in promoting it for this year. Pledges will start on Jan. 1, 2015. If you have not returned a card as of yet, please prayerfully consider how God would have you support the ministries at your parish. We appreciate your support and help. Do you know our volunteers? Here is volunteer Patty Pitsch at Sacred Heart parish. She has been instrumental in all of her life. Her mother and dad were the first couple married here and her grandmother led the drive to petition Bishop O’Dea to form a parish in this area. The family moved to the foot of Mt. Rainier and lived there for eighteen year. They moved back in 1935, so Patty has been a member since 1935. She was married in the old church (hall) in 1950. She and her husband Dean graduated from Sacred Heart school, as did her six children. Three of her children were married here and one of her fifteen grandchildren was baptized here as was her husband. She was involved in all the past clubs, parish councils, bazaars, bus trips and all that kept parishioners together and help it flourish. Now in her later year, she is still with Altar society, lector for over twenty years, Lazarus Committee for funerals, collection counting and taking St. Vincent’s calls at the rectory. She feels her life has been blessed with a wonderful family, healthy grandchildren and great grandchildren. All thanks goes to a loving father and our living Sacred Heart. We truly appreciate her dedication and effort. Thank you for volunteering your time and talent. Thank you for your joyful service and may God continue to bless you and your family. November 24: St. Andrew Dung-Lac and Companions The Vietnamese Martyrs, Andrew Dung-Lac and Companions are saints on the General Roman Calendar who were canonized by Pope John Paul II. On June 19, 1988, thousands of Overseas Vietnamese worldwide gathered at the Vatican for the Celebration of the Canonization of 117 Vietnamese Martyrs, an event chaired by Monsignor Tran Van Hoai. Their memorial is on November 24 although several of these saints have another memorial, as they were beatified and on the calendar prior to the canonization of the group. The Vatican estimates the number of Vietnamese martyrs at between 130,000 and 300,000. John Paul II decided to canonize those whose names are known and unknown, giving them a single feast day. The Vietnamese Martyrs fall into several groupings, those of the Dominican and Jesuit missionary era of the 17th century, those killed in the politically inspired persecutions of the 19th century, and those martyred during the Communist purges of the 20th century. A 117 martyrs were 96 Vietnamese, 11 Spanish Dominicans, and 10 French members of the Paris Foreign Missions Society. A young Vietnamese Martyr, Andrew Phú Yên, was beatified in March, 2000 by Pope John Paul II made the total 118 Vietnamese Martyrs. Stewardship Corner We talk a lot about ministries and unfortunately one ministry that doesn’t get mentioned is the preparation of our monthly breakfast, that is prepared by the Tom Cruz Family. They donate a lot of time and talent in providing our parish with a delicious breakfast the first Sunday of each month from October through June. This past weekend Tom and his family gave of their time and talent to prepare a “special” breakfast for our Youth Group so that they could take part in the breakfast and earn some money for their special programs. The breakfast was very well attended and hopefully, the Youth Group was able to come away with funds to assist them in their needs. Many thanks to Tom and his family for giving of their Time & Talent and for being so generous in giving up their Sunday to support the Youth Group of our parish. Thank you also to those who attended the breakfast and contributed to the support of our Youth Group.
