In previous lessons we have seen how changes began to take place within the church. We have
also seen how men began to think of themselves as successors to the apostles and began to form
councils and synods for the purpose of making laws. But there followed many other departures as
well.
Politics and religion began to mix. Constantine, the Roman Emperor, endeavored to
organize Christians in order to gain their political support. He decided such a group would be of
great advantage to him, so in 313 A.D., he issued the Edict of Milan which stopped the persecution
of Christians and then began to cater to them. He offered gifts and white robes to those who would
be baptized. As a result, multitudes came into this religio-political organization.
Constantine made Christianity popular through prestige and wealth. He appointed
Christians to high offices, granted bishops of the church judicial power and abolished taxation of
the churches and church leaders. Thus, he was able to sway the Christianity of his day to serve his
own purposes and policy.
The power structure of the Roman Empire was in the form of a pyramid with the
Emperor at the top. Advisors and governors served under the emperor and they in turn, ruled
over lesser authorities. The efficiency of this arrangement in governmental affairs had a great
appeal for the church authorities.
The church government became almost identical in form to the old Roman
government. Since Rome was the most prominent world center of that day, succeeding Roman
bishops enjoyed more and more prestige and power. Over the years the Roman bishop came to
be acknowledged generally as the only universal ruler of the church. Ultimately the title of “Pope”
(papa) was used exclusively in reference to the exalted Roman bishop. However, this title was never
used by the apostles and such presumption was severely condemned by Christ (Matt. 23:8-10). The
term “REVEREND” is used but once in the English Bible and the term there refers ONLY to
God (Ps. 111:9).
The church was undergoing great changes which neither Christ nor his apostles had
authorized. However, these changes did not occur overnight. They came so gradually that no one
generation became too concerned. However, the church had already departed from the divine
pattern given by Christ and the apostles.

I would like to say Thank You to all the wonderful
people and organizations that have been so
supportive of me during this difficult time. Life can
be very challenging at times and it is such a blessing
to be surrounded by a community that cares so
much. I want to thank the special group of friends
and family that organized the benefit for me, as well
