The establishment of the church was wonderful to behold. Christ had ascended into heaven but
promised the apostles they would receive power after the Holy Ghost came upon them (Acts 1:8).
The Holy Spirit came upon them in baptismal measure on the first Pentecost following Christ’s
resurrection. It was on that day the church became a reality (Acts 2).
The timetable in God’s scheme of redemption had been fulfilled. Ten days
following Christ’s ascension, the Bible says, “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they
(apostles, KJ) were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from
heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there
appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were
all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them
utterance” (Acts 2:1-4).
On that occasion, Peter proclaimed the first gospel sermon. He showed from the
scriptures that the miraculous events of that day had been prophesied by Joel (Acts 2:16-17)(Joel
2:28). He showed how Christ had been raised up to sit on David’s throne (Acts 2:29-32) and had
begun his reign in heaven (Acts 2:33-36).
His sermon had a profound effect upon the people. They were “pricked” in their
heart and inquired what they must do (Acts 2:37). They were told: “Repent, and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift
of the Holy Ghost” (Acts 2:38). Those who gladly received his word were baptized and the same
day about three thousand souls were added to the church as a result of their obedience (Acts
2:41).
The word “church” comes from the Greek word “ekklesia” and signifies the
“called out”. Thus, the church consists of those who gave heed to the call of the gospel.
Those who complied with the terms of the gospel were “delivered from the power of darkness
and translated into the kingdom of God’s dear Son” (Col. 1:13).
No other TIME could have been right for the establishment of the church; thus, from that
day forward, the saved, those who obey the gospel, have been “added to the church” by the Lord
(Acts 2:47).
