Guest Column: Meet the Matchmakers
By Constance Dickerson,
Noble Neighborhood
Branch Manager
When I resurrected the Heights
Libraries Readers’ Advisory
Team, one of my aims was to
make it more inclusive. It’s been
a long time since the library was
just about reading books, so we’ve adopted a new
name for the advisory team, the Matchmakers, and
a new mission to connect customers and staff with
discoveries from all of the library’s collections—music,
movies, audios, streaming, and more.
We achieve this by creating thematic bookmarks
loaded with recommendations, maintaining a
presence on social media sites (follow us on Twitter @
hts_matchmakers), offering staff training in customer
advisory, offering personal recommendations to
customers via email, and posting to our blogs. Check
out the “We Recommend,” tab on the library website
(www.heightslibrary.org) and discover what we have
Save the Dates for
Our First Friday Sales
at the Harvey &
Friends Bookshop
to offer. Better yet, don’t be shy—library staff is all
about sharing, and love nothing more than talking
with customers about great books, movies, and music.
Some of my favorite discoveries happened by taking
the advice of customers.
Our blog has not only recommendations for adults,
but for children and teens, as well. You can subscribe
via email, and never miss a new post. You can also see
the complete postings of individual authors or do a
subject search, and every title mentioned in the blogs
is linked to the CLEVNET catalog where, in one
click, you can check on an item’s availability or put it
on hold.
Whether you’re interested in morbid curiosities,
the latest books to be made into movies, best new
music, hot new teen reads, urban fantasy, something
to tide you over till Downton returns, meta movies,
or bedtime stories, we will help you discover all that
Heights Libraries’ collections have to offer.
Happy discovering!

the aftermath of a tragic accident.
In the days that follow they are forced
to face the choices they’ve made and
what they both are truly running from.
This powerful, moving, and
thought-provoking show by Greg Pierce
addresses bullying in its many forms and
the toll it can take on those involved.

Original Voices Book Club
Wed, 7:30 p.m.
Join us for this brand new book discussion group, as
we turn our focus this winter to inventive tales and
true stories set during the American Civil War.
Dec 10: The Boy in His Winter by Norman Lock
reimagines the fate of two of Mark Twain’s bestknown characters, transporting Huck Finn and
Jim into a journey winding through three centuries
of American history. From the battles of the Civil
War, to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, an
older, wiser Huck Finn living in the late 21st century
narrates this rich and remarkable vision of our
nation’s past, present, and future.
Jan 14: March by Geraldine Brooks views the Civil
War through the eyes of an idealistic man who is
confronted with moral complexities. March presents
the dark understory all but invisible in the pages of
Little Women. Called “a disturbing, supple and deeply
satisfying story” by the Plain Dealer, this imaginative
retelling takes us into the mind and heart of a man at
war with himself.
Feb 11: Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy by New York
Times bestselling author Karen Abbott illuminates
a little-known aspect of American history: a
spellbinding true story of four courageous women
who went undercover and risked everything to
become spies during the Civil War.
