Celebrating DECA Week 2014
This year the DECA organization had a busy week of activities. We
started by having Mr. Johnson sign a proclamation that it was DECA
Week at the Ridge.
DECA wanted the student
body, faculty and staff, and
community to be part of our
celebration. The students
were involved by finding the
logo, DECA diamonds, all
around campus and being
rewarded with a prize upon
their return. Our staff,
administrators, and faculty
received goodies delivered
to the front office,
counselors office and faculty workrooms. For the community, each
student created a card to be given to a child in the hospital over the
Thanksgiving holiday. Along with the card, DECA has provided
coloring activities, puzzles and pilgrim hats to
create.
The DECA students invited Mr. Gorka, assistant
principal, to join our classroom and demonstrate
how to tie a windsor knot. Once the studens had
an opportunity to practice, Mr. Gorka discussed
the importance of being dressed professionally
when applying for a job and provided interview
tips.
What is DECA? DECA
is a student
organization founded in 1946 with its core
focus to prepare emerging leaders and
entrepreneurs for careers in marketing,
finance, hospitality and management in
high schools around the world.
DECA had a great time celebrating with this
year’s activities. We thank everyone for
their participation and look forward to
continuing this DECA tradition next year.

ORHS THEATRE DEPARTMENT
On Halloween night the ORHS theatre department participated
in the International Thespian Society’s national fundraiser known as
‘Trick Or Treat So Kids Can Eat’. While participating in this service to
the community students went door to door, not to collect candy, but to
gather non-perishable food products. By the end of the night over
300lbs was accumulated and was donated to the Montgomery food
bank!

perform, and tech the entire production. The plays will be shown the
last weekend of January, please keep updated for more information.
This weekend, a group of selected students will be competing in
the Texas State Thespian Festival in Dallas on November, 20, 21, and
22. These students will have the chance to advance, through
performance competitions, to The National Thespian Society
Convention in Nebraska this summer. Several senior students will also
be competing for college scholarships while at the Festival. Good luck
seniors.
Cross Country Thanksgiving Challenge!
The ORHS Girls Track and Cross Country team took on the
challenge to collect food for the Holiday boxes that will be
given out in December to those in need in our community.
“Gladys Baggett Humanitarian
Employee of the Month”
In honor and remembrance of our beloved Gladys Baggett,
the elegant leader of the Oak Ridge High School Special
Services Department for five years (2005-2010), one campus
employee will be recognized each month. The honorees (one
from the ORHS-9th grade Campus and one from the ORHSSenior Campus) epitomize Gladys’ love, helpfulness,
generosity and great caring spirit while going “above and
beyond” for our Oak Ridge War Eagles. These monthly
winners are the unsung heroes and heroines of Oak Ridge
High School. Thank you, thank you, and thank you for all
that you do for our wonderful students!!!
November’s “Gladys Baggett humanitarian employees of the
month” winners are:
ORHS- 9th grade Campus … Ms. Hannah Dietrich
The C.P.E. (“Creating a Positive Environment”) Committee and the 9th
grade Campus would like to welcome Ms. Hannah Dietrich to the
“Ridge.” In her first year of teaching at Oak Ridge High School Ms.
Dietrich spends her great time, effort and tremendous energy guiding
our enthusiastic Freshmen War Eagles through the English I course.
After some reflection on the school year thus far, Ms. Hannah Dietrich
highlights her MOST favorite part of the day as ... just at “the end of
the passing time when the students are arriving to my class and I get to
ask how they are doing before we start our lessons, [I just love that
time!].” In a similar frame of mind, several colleagues have shared
their admiration for Ms. Dietrich's flexible nature, caring personality
and “going the extra mile” attitude especially during Eagle's Nest while
she tries to help ALL of our War Eagles succeed academically.
Ms. Dietrich is a graduate of Iowa City-City High School (Go Red and
White with Louie, the Little Hawk for a mascot) and interestingly
enough... she has not worn matching socks since she was 12 ½ years
old. And, maybe even more exciting than that, Ms. Dietrich has taught
English in Beijing, China, to middle school students. WOW!
Again, welcome to Oak Ridge High School Ms. Dietrich – “we all wish
you a fun and rewarding year!!!”
Ms. Hannah Dietrich is inspired greatly by the following words of
wisdom:
1. “You can never be overdressed or over educated.” - Oscar Wilde
2. “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change
often.” -Winston Churchill
ORHS- Senior Campus … Lt. Colonel Greg Overby
Honestly, this Wingspan is not long enough to reflect on and list the
abundantly great deeds and community-related actions that Lt. Colonel Greg
Overby has initiated over these last eight years while caring for the academic
and personal success of our War Eagles. As the Senior Aerospace Science
Instructor on both campuses, Lt. Colonel Overby promotes his cadets through
service projects such as Open House (9th and Senior Campuses), Senior
Awards Night, ORHS “Turkey Day”, volunteering at Houser Elementary,
reading programs and face painting at Oak Ridge Elementary, A.P. Team skits
and the annual welcoming students to York Junior High. Lt. Colonel
continuously encourages our Oak Ridge AFJROTC cadets, ensures that timely
deadlines are met for students’ success in the program and keeps up with the
U.S. Air Force requirements which allowed our students the chance of
receiving an Outstanding Unit Award for 2014.
Lt. Colonel Overby MOST enjoys “watching our cadets demonstrate their
commitment to AFJROTC's core values of 'Integrity First', ‘Service Before
Self' and ‘Excellence in All We Do.' I also enjoy the day to day interactions
with our cadets and school personnel. Our school is full of amazing people!”
A few lesser known facts about the Lt. Colonel… he played keyboard and was
the lead singer in a Country and “Oldies” band called Random Band and he
attended the same high school that Johnny Manziel went to – Kerrville Tivy
High School (Go Blue and Gold Antlers!). Could Lt. Colonel Overby be our
source for a multitude of Cleveland Brown Manziel jerseys? (We hear he has a
connection.)
“But on a serious note, welcome back Lt. Colonel Overby, we are so blessed to
have you as a member of the Oak Ridge Faculty and Staff and to see you back
on campus after these last six months of health challenges. We missed you
tremendously!”
Lt. Col. Overby is inspired on a daily basis by the following quotes:
1. “Either get busy living or get busy dying.” -Frank Darabont , The
Shawshank Redemption
2. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own
understanding. Acknowledge Him in all your ways and He will direct
your paths.” - Proverbs 3: 5-6
3. “I shall not die but live and declare the works of the Lord.” - Psalms

***********************************************
Rugby is a game that develops leadership, team spirit, courage,
sportsmanship, and friendship.
Garrett Soileau started playing rugby his freshman year. Like most
individuals who start playing rugby, he quickly fell in love and learned
to play the game well. He was selected for Texas High Performance
teams every year and his senior year he played for the Rocky Mountain
Challenge All-Tournament Team and USA Rugby Stars and Stripes,
reserved for the top 50 Boys and top 50 Girls selected from Regional
All Star Tournaments.
In response to the question of what he loves most about rugby, Garrett
explains, "The fact that everyone has the chance to prove themselves.
In rugby everyone has the chance to take the ball in for the score and
feel what it’s like to put points on the board for your team. Forwards
have to be able to pass just as good as backs and backs have to be able
to go blow up a ruck if needed. You basically have to be able to play any
position which isn't like any other sport out there.
"To me rugby means opportunity. This sport has given me so many
opportunities that I would have never gotten if it weren't for rugby.
Because of rugby I've had the privilege to represent my state and even
represent my country. I've made friends with people all over the United
States and even overseas because of all the opportunities rugby has
presented me with."
Garrett is perfect example of everyone getting a chance to prove
themselves in rugby. He most recently was invited to the U20 Junior
Men's All American World Trophy team. He also plays for Arkansas
State University Rugby Team.
Come check out the fastest growing sport in the nation with the largest
rugby club in Texas!
Woodlands Youth Rugby will hold tryouts each Wednesday in
November from 6-8 pm at Alden Bridge Sports Park. Players from all
area schools are welcome.

school verifying that the student has met the 90 percent
attendance requirement for the semester preceding the date
of application. The student can request this form at their
Assistant Principal’s office. Requests are typically processed
within 24-48 hours. Students should remember that
buildings are closed during spring and winter break as well
as holidays and should plan accordingly.
