Missing School Matters!
Good habits develop early and teaching children that school
attendance is a non-negotiable is a good place to start. When
students are not in class, they are missing opportunities to
learn – not only from the teacher but from each other.
Chronic absenteeism, missing school two or more days each
month, adds up. While missing only two days a month may
seem inconsequential, over a ten year period, this adds up to
missing one full year of instruction: 2 days x 9 months = 18 x
10 years = one school year. Give your child the opportunity
to be successful by encouraging him/her to be in school every
day.

TMEA area auditions were held on Sunday, January 11, 2015.
This was the final step in the TMEA All-State process and we
are proud to announce that we have two Oak Ridge High
School seniors named to the Texas All-State Band. Seniors,
Taylor Knobloch and Trevor Burnett who are both clarinet
players will travel to our State Convention TMEA in February
to participate in the Texas All-State clinic and concert.
Becoming a Texas All State member is the highest
achievement that a High School musician can attain. We are
so excited and proud for these two young musicians.
Congratulations.

ORHS Debate!
Students interested in taking debate and being on the debate
team next school year should see Coach Christensen in P18.
There will be a general interest debate meeting held in
February with the date to be announced. Students should be
aware that there are participation requirements in order to
be in the debate program. Students enrolled in the Debate I
class are on the Novice Debate Team for ORHS. Students in
Debate II, III, & IV are selected by the coach and are on the
Varsity Debate Team.
The ORHS Debate Team is currently ranked in the top 5% in
the Nation and the top 3% in the state. We are ranked #3 in
our district. If you enjoy logical argumentation, working as
part of a team, traveling and increasing your research,
writing and speaking skills, then debate may be for you.
Contact Coach Christensen for more details

representatives will return next week to take orders on

Baseball Tryouts!
Oak Ridge Baseball will be holding their baseball tryouts on
Jan. 30th at 3:00 at the baseball field. You will need to make
sure to have a copy of your 2014-15 physical and your report
card. We will continue the tryouts on Saturday Jan. 31st. Any
questions contact Coach Standefer if you are a freshman or
Coach Andy Einhaus if you are 10th- 12th grader.
ORHS Sports Medicine!
On Saturday, January 11, 2015 the Oak Ridge War Eagle Sports
Medicine team attended the Greater Houston Athletic Trainers' Society
(GHATS) Student Trainer Workshop. This workshop is the largest free
student trainer workshop in the nation and had over 1000 students in
attendance. With 35 students, we had the largest delegation there!!!
Students learned about various topics including taping, yoga in sports,
and even got to watch a cadaver dissection of the knee. Several colleges
and vendors were also there to talk to the students. We had a strong
showing in the student and professional taping contests and in the
poster contest however, there are two achievements we are extremely
proud of; Mary Filer, Macey Mack, and Paige Taylor were all given the
All-State Academic Achievement Award! Also, for the first time, we
entered a team into the Mark Salter Memorial Trivia Bowl. Sara
Blackwell, Kathy Dang, Mary Filer, Emily Gibson, and Paige Taylor
dominated North Shore and Cy-Fair before falling to eventual
champions, Dawson, in the semifinals. The semifinals and finals were
held in front of everyone in attendance (over 1200 people - talk about
nerve racking!) They did a great job and we received several
compliments on how well they did and how well they represented Oak
Ridge High School.
SCI://TECH Exposition Volunteers Needed
SCI://TECH volunteers are needed support a variety
of STEM events from January 23, 2015, through
February 14, 2015. While volunteers are needed for
all 14 SCI://TECH events, the greatest volunteer need
is for science fair judges on Friday, January 30, 2015.
While a scientific background may be helpful, it is
not a necessity. If you are a novice or science is not
your expertise, use your critical thinking skills to
judge Junior High projects.
To learn more, please visit the website at:
www.efta-us.org/volunteer.
It is a great opportunity to interact with and support
local students. Please join Education for Tomorrow
Alliance (EfTA) in encouraging bright minds. For
more information please contact Monica Bomkamp
Enia at:
[email protected] or 936-273-7087.
The 25th Annual SCI://TECH Exposition, themed
Igniting Inspiration for a Generation,
is a partnership between EfTA and area schools, and
includes nearly 5,000 students engaging in STEM
events with the support of hundreds of volunteers.

Supporting the ORHS Music Program!
Beware! Not Raising Funds for ORHS!
In the past several weeks parents and business owners in our
community have been solicited by FMG Print Solutions, a
group based in Fort Worth. This company purports that it is
selling ads on behalf of the Oak Ridge High School Baseball
team. FMG Print Solutions is not selling ads on behalf of our
baseball team or any other school organization. None of the
money from ads purchased from this company comes to Oak
Ridge High School or benefits our school in any way.
To know if a company is raising funds on behalf of our school
or any ORHS student group, you can call the school at 832592-5462 to verify the representations made by the company
or check our website. Typically we make our patrons aware
of ongoing fundraisers through various types of
communications with parents such as our campus
newsletter, website or communications from one of our staff
members or student clubs.
New Student Registration!
If you are new to the area and are moving into our
attendance zone please call to schedule an appointment at

Driver License Attendance Verification
(Verification of Enrollment – VOE)
To obtain a driver’s license in the state of Texas, a student
between the ages of 15 and 18 must annually provide to the
Texas Department of Public Safety a form obtained from the
school verifying that the student has met the 90 percent
attendance requirement for the semester preceding the date
of application. The student can request this form at their
Assistant Principal’s office. Requests are typically processed
within 24-48 hours. Students should remember that
buildings are closed during spring and winter break as well
as holidays and should plan accordingly.
