To register for a particular class please contact the Academy Registrar by telephone at
210.335.6229 or by email at [email protected]. Students may also register in person. Please
be prepared to give the Registrar the following information:

Unless otherwise noted all classes meet from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday
Due to scheduling conflicts and other unforeseen circumstances, please make certain that you
call the Academy Registrar prior to reporting to your first class.
Effective September 1, 2013, Course 3183 and effective September 1, 2015, Course 3184
State and Federal Law Update Courses are mandated for your Peace Officer License (new
training cycle). Mandates also include 3939, 3232, and CIT Updates.

*****SPECIAL NOTICE*****
In order to maintain our standards and ensure deputies are able to perform the essential
functions of their jobs, deputies must pass in-service standards and procedures.
Therefore, deputies assigned to in-service must be able to complete all the physical
demands of the classes/weapon qualification course. If they are not able to accomplish
this, they must be scheduled at a later date when they can safely complete the required
courses.

of required hours has not changed.

Those holding a BASIC PEACE OFFICER Certificate or no certificate will be required to
have Cultural Diversity, Special Investigative Topics, and Crisis Intervention Training.
Those holding an INTERMEDIATE or higher do not have specific courses (other than the
State/Federal Law Update Course.
Individuals first licensed after January 1, 2011 must complete the basic Human
Trafficking Course within the first year of licensure.

the outside training provider. Check with the provider regarding all fees.
Reminder: Officers registering for these classes must provide PID numbers. PID numbers
are obtainable through your agency.

SPANISH VERBAL CHALLENGE
TEST DATES
The following dates for this quarter have been reserved for personnel requesting to challenge
the Intermediate Spanish course. Testing will be conducted on a walk-in basis between the
hours of 8:00 am - 4:00 pm on these particular dates. Should you wish to reserve an alternate

MAKE UP QUALIFICATIONS
Currently, all In-Service and Make up qualifications are held at the Bexar County Firing
Range located at 3805 Farm Road. Please call ahead so that ammunition can be pulled and
exact dates and times can be relayed to Deputies/Detention Officers.
Dates are subject to change. For range information contact the Firearms section at
210.848.8729, 210.335.6049, or the Academy at 210.335.6229.
Range Directions for Bexar County Firing Range:
Take 410 SE
Exit Southton Road
Keep right on Southton Road, turn left onto Farm Road, pass Cyndi Krier Juvenile Center, and
turn left on the first road past the Bexar County Sheriff Patrol/Academy complex. Follow the
long road to the firing ranges.

FIREARMS CERTIFICATE OF PROFICIENCY CARD
HONORABLY RETIRED PEACE OFFICERS
Instructions for Retired Peace Officers requesting to demonstrate weapons proficiency
Under provisions of the Texas Occupations Code, Title 10, Section 1701.357, retired Texas peace officers may
apply for an opportunity to demonstrate weapons proficiency in order to carry a handgun. On successfully
demonstrating their proficiency they may be issued a certificate of proficiency card, attesting to their proficiency.
This card must be accompanied by the bearer’s Retired Peace Officers identification card in order to legally
carry concealed as a retired peace officer (Texas Penal Code 46.15(a)(5), and 18 USC 926c).
1.
Retirees desiring to qualify for a certificate of proficiency under Occupations Code 1701.357 shall contact
the Sheriff’s Academy firearms training unit (FTU) to schedule a range date appointment.
2.
Fee. As approved by the Bexar County Commissioner’s Court, a fee of $35.00 shall be paid by anyone
applying for a certificate of proficiency. Applicants may submit payment in form of a money order, to the
BCSO Business Office located on 200 N. Comal St., San Antonio, TX 78207, and bring their receipt with
them to their firing appointment, Or bring their application and money order (made payable to Bexar
County Sheriff’s Office) to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Academy, 3805 Farm Road, San Antonio, TX 78223.
Personal checks or cash will NOT be accepted.

Affidavit. On arriving at the Sheriff’s Academy at the date & time of their appointment the retiree shall
report to the FTU staff, either at the Academy or at the firing range, as directed by the FTU.

The retiree must complete a sworn affidavit affirming that:
1)
The officer honorably retired after not less than a total of 15 years of service as a
commissioned officer with one or more state or local law enforcement agencies;
2)
The officer’s license as a commissioned officer was not revoked or suspended for any
period during the officer’s term of service as a commissioned officer; and
3)
The officer has no psychological or physical disability that would interfere with the
officer’s proper handling of a handgun.

He/she has never been convicted of a family violence offense and is not now charged
with a family violence offense.

qualification process, the retiree will be
issued a Certificate of Proficiency card.

Anytime a retiree carries a handgun under
these provisions, he/she will carry both the
Certificate of Proficiency Card and their
retired peace officer identification card,
and shall present the cards upon request.
7.
Any Certificate of Proficiency Card issued
under these provisions will expire on the
second anniversary of the date the
Certificate of Proficiency was issued, within
the State of Texas (OC 1701.357(d)).
Retired officers to whom this section
applies may request an annual evaluation
and re-issuance of their certificate of
proficiency as needed to comply with
applicable Federal (18 USC 926c) or other
laws.

deputies in the BCSO.

The Weapons Proficiency
Certificate/Card is to be
immediately surrendered to the
Sheriff’s Office.
Renewal or Replacement. To renew the
Firearms Certificate of Proficiency Card the
retiree must contact the Sheriff’s Academy
FTU, at least 4 weeks before the card is due
to expire to obtain an appointment for a
range date. The retiree shall follow the
same procedures outlined in paragraphs 2
through 4 above, to obtain a replacement
for the expired card.

If a certificate of proficiency card
is lost while still valid, the retiree
shall follow the same procedures
identified for replacing an expired
card. At the retiree’s discretion,
the replacement card may be
issued showing the original
expiration date and no requalification firing will be
required, or the retiree may requalify on the range and a new
expiration date will be established.
The fee of $35.00 will still be
required, in either case.
10. Practice and Qualification: Those desiring
some practice shooting can do so on
Additional Proficiency Training (APT) days.
See the APT 2014-2015 schedule for dates
and times.
You must bring your own ammunition.
Retirees can attend any in in service range
dates which fall on most Tuesdays and
Fridays from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Suspension or Revocation. A retiree's
Certificate of Proficiency Card may be
suspended or revoked for cause by the
Sheriff or Sheriff’s designee. Suspension will
be directed anytime the retired officer is
arrested for a class B misdemeanor or
higher offense and suspension shall remain

GUIDES FOR OUTSIDE AGENCIES
Any Peace Officer or Detention Officer from an outside agency wishing to attend “in-house” classes at
the BCSO Academy must follow the below guidelines:
 They must be a licensed Peace Officer or Detention Officer currently employed by a law
enforcement agency
 Outside Agency Officers must submit a written request to attend each class (2) two weeks prior
to the course date. The written request must be submitted to

Department Sheriff, Chief, or Agency Training Officer.

class at the BCSO Academy.
Outside agency officers are those not employed by Bexar County. “In-house” classes are those offered
and taught locally by BCSO instructors.
