Scrooge learns his Christmas lesson again

NEW PROVIDENCE – The
Hardin County Home Educators
High School students presented
“Tiny Tim’s Christmas Carol” this
past weekend at the New Providence
Roundhouse. Welcoming
the
Christmas
season were high school students
in the story of Scrooge, but this
time from the perspective of Tiny
Tim narrating his observations
of Ebenezer Scrooge’s heart
changing, initially for bad and then
eventually for good. It is Charles
Dickens’ classic tale of miserliness
succumbing to the Christmas spirit.
This time it was done with the
stagework of
Joel Stephenson
(Scrooge),
Ryland
DuChane
(Narrator/Father/Tiny Tim) and
Emilee Ballard (Rebaecca,Tim
Tim’s daughter) all of whom walked
the audience through Scrooge’s
terrifying and exhilarating journey
of self discovery.
Pictured are a few scenes, with Christmas carolers in the
Scrooge business window, Scrooge looking at his fate, Scrooge
(Joel Stephenson) questions the intentions of the Ghost of
Christmas Past (Victoria Litwiller) , and the full cast for the finale.

november 10, 2014 7:00 p.m.
Eldora City Council met in Regular Session
with Mayor Jim Brown presiding. Council members Brekke, Hoy, Johns, Kosanke and Pence
were present. Also present were City Attorney
Martin Petersen, Interim City Clerk Carol Williams, staff and members of the public.
Mayor Brown asked for a motion to approve
the Consent Agenda with Kosanke making
the motion. Pence then stated that the bill for
$13.08 from Danko Emergency Equipment
should be paid for by Fire Trust instead of the
city. Mayor Brown then asked for a second with
Brekke seconding the motion. Consent Agenda
consisted of approval of October 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th,
10th, 13th, 15th, 17th, 23rd, 28th, 29th and 30th, 2014
minutes; approval of bills; approval of Renewal
Wine Permit for The Glass Haven (timely filed);
approval of Renewal Beer Permit for Casey’s
General Store #2532; and approval of Tax Exemption Application for Marvin & Ruby Murphy
new home at 1708 12th Avenue. Motion carried
unanimously.
Mayor Brown then opened the meeting to
Citizen Comments. Comments were accepted
from the public.
Mayor Brown then opened the meeting to old
business including the bid from Hy Drite Chemical Co. of $28,375.47 at 1126 12th Street to
remove chemicals in the building. After discussion, Hoy made a motion to table it with Pence
seconding it. Motion carried unanimously.
Mayor Brown then asked for a motion to
approve the 2014 Financial Report FYE June
30, 2014 with Kosanke making the motion and
Brekke seconding it. Motion carried unanimously.
Mayor Brown then asked for a motion to approve the city purchasing an ID system with Kosanke making the motion and Pence seconding
it. Motion carried unanimously.
Mayor Brown then asked for a motion to approve Planning & Zoning’s recommendations
on Andrea Buss moving her beauty shop from
1245 14th Avenue to her home at 1407 19th Avenue with Pence making the motion and Hoy
seconding it. Motion carried unanimously.
Mayor Brown then asked for a motion to sign
the Home Base Iowa Proclamation with Pence
making the motion and Kosanke seconding it.
Motion carried unanimously.
Mayor Brown then opened discussion concerning the structural problems with the Old
YMCA building and A Cut Above. After lengthy
discussion it was decided to have Jerry Shoff
look at both properties to determine a solution.
Mayor Brown then asked for a motion to
approve Resolution No. 2616 RESOLUTION
APPROVING THE HIRING AND SETTING
WAGES FOR EDWARD LEPLEY AS A FULLTIME POLICE OFFICER with Pence making
the motion and Hoy seconding it. Motion carried
unanimously.
Mayor Brown then jumped ahead and asked
for a motion to approve Resolution No. 2618
RESOLUTION APPROVING THE HIRING
AND SETTING WAGES FOR DUSTY DUNN
AS A PART-TIME POLICE OFFICER AND JESUS ANTONIO RAGEL-ESCARZAGA AS A
RESERVE POLICE OFFICER with Kosanke
making the motion and Hoy seconding it. Motion carried unanimously.
Mayor Brown then asked for a motion to approve Resolution No. 2617 RESOLUTION APPROVING TEMPORARY PAY INCREASE FOR
CAROL WILLIAMS FOR ADDED DUTIES with
a pay increase from $16.77/hour to $17.77/hour
with Brekke making the motion and Johns seconding it. Motion carried unanimously.
Mayor Brown then recommended tabling the
two Resolution recommendations of Dorsey
and Whitney Law Firm until the meeting on 1113-14 due to the lack of available documents
with Kosanke making the motion and Hoy seconding it. Motion carried unanimously.
Mayor Brown then opened discussion on
Resolution No. 2619 RESOLUTION APPROVING CITY ADMINISTRATOR’S EMPLOYMENT
CONTRACT. With a few minor details to work
out, Hoy made a motion to table the resolution with Kosanke seconding it. Motion carried
unanimously.
Mayor Brown then opened discussion on approval of a professional recruiter for the Chief
of Police position. Mayor Brown then asked for
a motion to approve Jeff Horne as the recruiter
with a maximum cost to the city of $5,000 with
Kosanke making the motion and Brekke seconding it. Motion carried unanimously.

1. Junk abatement will be addressed in November and action will be taken as advised by
legal counsel.
2. Halverson made a motion to approve resolution 14-19 to set a public hearing for the next
regular Council Meeting and accept bids on the
purchase of the old Water Tower property until
Jan 1,2015. Clemons seconded. Roll Call Votes
were taken. Motion passed: 4;0:1 absent.
New Business:
1. Barry Kaplan, new Legal Counsel for the
City, addressed the council regarding Code
policies in place for abatement of Junk vehicles
by sending a letter to abate within 7 days with a
citation served by the Sheriff to haul the vehicle
away to be stored; and dilapidated Houses,
stating the 3 plans: lawsuit, take over property
with a notice, or impose fines through municipal
infractions as a civil or criminal case heard by
a magistrate. He also noted that mandatory injunctions can be issued so that the offender has
to keep their place clean or be held in contempt
of court, for repeat offenders.
2. Eddy May, from Advantage Business Systems, addressed the council with guidance on
reading the new financial reports: what to watch
for and where to look for fund balances in order
to make decisions on future spending.
3. Caster made a motion to approve Res#1418 to revise the Employee handbook to allow
the City Clerk to pay approved employee paychecks by direct deposit. Donaldson seconded.
Roll Call Votes were taken. Motion passed:

4. Council discussed the Water Billing Code
penalties. It was decided to change the Code
ordinances at the December meeting to reflect
the changes and vote at that time.
5. Municipal infractions were discussed with
Barry Kaplan. No vote was needed.
6. Halverson made a motion to table the alley abandonment until the December meeting.
Clemons seconded. Roll Call Votes were taken.
Motion passed: 4:0:1 absent
7. No action was taken on the change of the
Council meeting date.
8. Halverson made a motion to purchase
a JD 8 ft snow blade for under $4000. Caster
seconded. Roll Call Votes were taken. Motion
passed: 4:0:1 absent
9. Donaldson made a motion to approve Ordinance#117, amending Ordinance 92.07 to require a 90 day water service deposit from renters, whose landlord have opted out of landlord
liability for utility service, waiving the 2nd & 3rd
reading of the ordinance. Caster seconded. Roll
Call Votes were taken. Motion passed: 4:0:1 absent.
Donaldson made a motion to adjourn the
meeting. Caster seconded. All Ayes. The meeting was adjourned at 9:50pm. The next regular

Key Club raises
money for UNICEF
The key club, the high school branch
of Kiwanis, held a competition to raise
money for UNICEF. Each of the teachers at the high school had a can that the
high schoolers could put money into.
The teacher with the most money “won”
and had a pie thrown in their face. Unicef takes proven, low-cost methods
that save children’s lives and makes
them available regardless of income,
ethnicity or location.
One of UNICEF’s main goals is to
eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus.
For only $1.80 UNICEF can provide a
shot to protect a mother and her baby
from tetanus. Since 1994 key club has
raise $5 million for UNICEF. The top
five place winners were Mr. Howe,
Mr. Bunt, Mr. Jowitt, Mr. Damon and
Mrs. Owens. Mrs. Owens had the most
money and took a pie to her face. The
high school kids, led by Jordyn McCall and Emilee Ferriss, raised over
$100!
The kindergarteners also trick or
treated for Unicef and William
Ritchie raised the most money out of
all three kindergarten classes. It’s wonderful to see children focus on serving
and giving back to the community.
The top five place winners for the teachers were, left
to right, Mrs. Owens, Mr. Howe, Mr. Damon, Mr. Bunt, Mr.
Jowitt.

Karla Beth Bronzynski, 58, of Eldora, Iowa, passed
away peacefully on Monday, Nov. 17, 2014 at the Iowa
River Hospice Home with her loving family at her side.
Memorial services for Karla will be held at 10:30 a.m.
on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014 at the Eldora United Methodist Church located in Eldora, Iowa. Public visitation
will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21,

Karla Beth Sneller was born on April 24, 1956, in
Sioux Center, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Henrietta (Vande Kamp) Sneller and was raised and educated
in the Sioux Center school system graduating in 1974
as Salutatorian. Following high school Karla went on to
Northwestern College graduating in 1978 Magna Cum
Laude in elementary education and natural sciences.
Karla was united in marriage to Brian Bronzynski on
August 26, 1977, at the First Reformed Church in Sioux
Center, Iowa. From this union three children were born:
Kella, Kaden and Kole.
Karla dedicated her life to the elementary kids that
she taught. It was more than a job for her, it was a passion. She worked as an elementary teacher from 1978
until 2014. She was blessed to teach so many wonderful
elementary children in her classroom or gym in her 36year career.
Besides the classroom, her professional life included
the following memberships: Iowa Reading Association:
Past President and Vice President, Treasurer, ZoneCoordinator, Executive Board Member, Hardy Reading Council and Three River Reading Council: Past

Randy J. Choate 62
Randy J. Choate, 62, of Colo, passed away Saturday,
Nov. 15, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines,
Iowa. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday,
Nov. 18, 2014 at the Honey Creek–New Providence
Friends Church in New Providence, with Arlen Daleske
officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at the Chester Cemetery in Union. Arrangements were made with
the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Condolences

Randy Joe Choate, son of Fon and Dorothy (Harrington) Choate was born on September 23, 1952 in Jefferson, Iowa. He was raised in Dana, Iowa where he received his education from the Dana Community School.
Following his education, he worked for several years
as a mechanic for Benton Beverage Trucks in Ames.
In the summer of 1980, he opened S&R Repair in New
Providence. On December 16, 1980 he married Sandy
L. Shenton at Honey Creek-New Providence Friends
Church. The couple resided in New Providence. Due
to his failing health, he closed S&R Repair. The couple
moved to Colo in July of 2014. Randy enjoyed working
on any kind of car. He loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Randy is survived by his wife, Sandy of Colo; five
sons, John (Amber) Choate of Manly, Craig (Chrystal)
Choate of Marshalltown, Jason and James Choate of

He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, one brother and one sister.
Frances A. Williams, 86, formerly of
Eldora, passed away
Friday, Nov. 14, 2014
at Kennybrook Village in Grimes, Iowa.
A funeral service will
be held at 10:30 a.m.
on Saturday, Nov. 22,
2014, at the First Congregational
United
Church of Christ in Eldora with the Rev. Corey Larson officiating. Burial will follow at Roughwoods
Cemetery rural Eldora. Visitation will be held on Friday
evening from 5-8 p.m. at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in
Eldora. Condolences may be made at www.abelsfuneralhomes.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made
to the Hardin County Community Endowment Foundation and in the memo line indicate the gift be made to the
“Frances Ramundt Williams Scholarship Fund.”
Frances was born on June 5, 1928, in Hampton, Iowa,
the daughter and only child of Henry and Pearl (Wehrman) Holthuis. She spent her childhood in Gifford,
Iowa but graduated from Eldora High School in 1945.
She attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) for two
years, receiving her Kindergarten-Primary diploma for
teaching. In 1968, she graduated from Drake University
with a BS Degree after years of taking classes at night,
on weekends and summer school, all while working full
time.
Over the next 40 years, Frances taught school primarily first grade in the school systems in Laurel, Iowa, Reinbeck, Iowa, Hubbard, Iowa, Union, Iowa, and 26 years
at Eldora, Iowa. She also taught at Iowa State Training
School for boys during several summers.
In 1951 she was married to Leon Ramundt and to this
marriage was born a son, Dana. They were later divorced.
On June 10, 1972 she was married to Harold Williams of
Union and resided on his farm northwest of Union until
Harold’s death in 2006. In 2010, her son brought her to
Des Moines where she lived until her death.
Over the years, Frances held leadership roles with
Business and Professional Women’s Organization
(BPW), the NEA, the ISEA, Eldora Hospital Auxiliary
and Roughwoods Cemetery Association.
She was passionate about teaching reading to first
graders and playing football with the boys on the playground or jumping rope with the girls during recess or
playground duty during noon hour. She loved all kinds
of music and just loved to dance. However, her greatest
enjoyment came from her grandchildren, Ben, Kate and
Betsy, who she loved more than life itself.
She is survived by her son Dana (Pam) of Clive,
grandchildren Ben (Holly) Ramundt of Dallas, Texas,
Kate Ramundt of Des Moines, and Betsy (Sam) Christianson of West Fargo, North Dakota, and five great
grandchildren.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents and her
husband.
Marcene Husted, 81, of Alden, Iowa, passed away
Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014, at the North Iowa Mercy Medical Center, Mason City, Iowa. Funeral service for Marcene Husted was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20,
2014 at the Linn’s Funeral Home 1521 Washington Avenue, Iowa Falls, Iowa. Private family burial will be at
the Alden Township Cemetery, Alden, Iowa. Memorials
may be directed to the family.
Kenneth Appelgate, 94, passed away on Sunday, Nov.
16, 2014 at Bethany Manor in Story City, IA. Funeral
services will be held on Friday, Nov. 21, at 11 a.m. at
the Presbyterian Church near Kamrar, IA. Kenny will be
buried at Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Visitation was
held at Bethany Manor Chapel in Story City, on Thursday, Nov. 20. Memorial contributions may be directed to
the family to be distributed to the American Legion Post
#317, and Kiwanis International.
