Post: Earth Observation Scientist

Duration: Permanent contract, with 1 year probationary period
Remuneration: £20,000 - £26,000 per annum depending on experience. Employees are included within a bonus
scheme (payable on satisfactory performance by both the company and individual over the course of a financial
year) and benefits package including a corporate health plan and income protection.
Summary of the role:
We currently have an excellent opportunity for a candidate who would like to work on some exciting projects with
the European Space Agency (ESA) as well as other institutes and companies across Europe.
This is a diverse role; the successful candidate will contribute to larger European EO activities and projects in range
of activities including data processing and analysis, software development, calibration and validation activities and
quality control of both satellite and in-situ data. It will require a knowledge of programming and, ideally, optical
remote sensing/marine optics.
As a well-established but relatively small company, ARGANS is an excellent organisation to begin your career; with

successful candidate will be comfortable working within part of a multi-disciplinary team and able to work
autonomously. There will also be an opportunity for the successful candidate to participate within the commercial
bidding process and provide technical inputs towards business proposals.
Duties will include:
 To provide support to the Quality Control (QC) of Earth Observation (EO) data
 To carry out day-to-day duties supporting the analysis and anomaly assurance of EO sensors and products
 To provide support to the maintenance and operation of both pre- and post-processing software and
tools developed by ARGANS
 To provide input into the development of alternate image visualisation methodologies and assessment
techniques
 To regularly perform the QC and QA of technical documentation, especially in the outlining and describing
of QC and Cal/Val of EO data
 To work as an individual or as part of a team to satisfy client requirements in a timely and efficient
manner
 To represent the company at external events and negotiations.

Postgraduate qualification in a related
field (Remote Sensing, Environmental
Science, Geography etc.)
PhD on topics related to Remote
Sensing or any Earth/Environmental

Experience in computer programming
(e.g. IDL, fortran, Python, MatLab,
HTML, Java);
Experience of the Linux / UNIX
operating system
Able to work co-operatively and
constructively within a team of diverse
background (scientists, developers,
administrators) and differing
geographical locations.
