Korea Biz Dialogue Impiana KLCC Kuala Lumpur November 18th 2014

Korea Biz Dialogue
Impiana KLCC Kuala Lumpur
November 18th 2014
Welcoming Remarks by
H.E. Cho Byungjae,
Ambassador of the Republic of Korea
It is a great pleasure for me to write this foreword for the Korea Biz
Dialogue, which will take place on 18 November 2014 at the
Impiana KLCC, Kuala Lumpur.
Korea and Malaysia has remarkably marched a long way since
the establishment of diplomatic relationship in 1960. Over the
years, we have witnessed significant growth in the establishments
of mutually beneficial and future-oriented strategic partnership
between the two countries in economic affairs, especially in the
business sector. Bilateral trade and investment volume between
Korea and Malaysia has increased largely compared to before;
trade volume has doubled from US 8.1 billion in 2003 to US 19.7
billion in 2013, and Korea’s investments in Malaysia notified to
Korea EXIM Bank between 1980 to 2013 recorded US 11 billion. In
addition, Korean companies in Malaysia, represented by
KOCHAM, are accelerating their CSR activities to contribute to
the wellbeing of Malaysian society.
I believe the Korea Biz Dialogue will serve as an important
platform for enhancing the knowledge of Korean investors’ doing
business in Malaysia and strengthening the business relationship
between Korea and Malaysia. The Embassy on behalf of all other
organizers, KOCHAM, KCCI and KOTRA, would like to extend a
special thanks to the Ministry of International Trade and Industry
for co-hosting the dialogue. We would also like to thank Ministry
of Finance, Immigration Department of Malaysia, Royal
Malaysian Customs Department, Department of Labor Malaysia,
Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia and Malaysian Investment
Development Authority, and Wong & Partners for the full support
and contributions as presenters and panelists.
Cho Byungjae
Congratulatory Remarks by
Y.B. Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed,
Minister of International Trade and Industry
I wish to congratulate the Embassy of the Republic of Korea,
KOCHAM, KOTRA and KCCI for jointly organising the 2nd Korea
Biz Dialogue in Kuala Lumpur. I am pleased to be part of this
Korean Business Dialogue.
International surveys have shown that the Malaysian government
has business friendly policies. In the latest World Bank’s Doing
Business Report 2014, Malaysia surged to 6th position among 189
economies. The World Economic Forum ranked Malaysia 20th
among 144 economies on its Global Competitiveness Report
2014-2015, an improvement from 24th position previously. The
WEF commended Malaysia’s improvements in labour market
efficiency and institutions. As such, Malaysia continues to remain
a competitive investment destination for foreign investors.
Our bilateral trade and economic relations are strong. In 2013,
the Republic of Korea was Malaysia’s second largest foreign
investor with approved investments amounting to US$1.67 billion
in 13 manufacturing projects. These are expected to create 2,040
employment opportunities. I recently led a Malaysian trade
mission to Korea, which generated much benefit for both Korean
and Malaysian businesses. We must continue to work closely
together to increase promotion activities and enhance
awareness of trade and investment opportunities between
Malaysia and Korea.
I would like to thank the organizer again for their efforts and I wish
all participants a successful and fruitful Dialogue.
Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed
Korea Biz Dialogue
November 18th 2014, Kuala Lumpur
Introduction
Korea Biz Dialogue was first held in 2013 to invite Malaysian government officials and
private sector experts to provide Korean investors with useful information for doing business
in Malaysia based on their hands-on-experience in each field. Now entering its second
year, this year’s Korea Biz Dialogue will be jointly organized by the Embassy of the Republic
of Korea, The Korea Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), KOCHAM and KOTRA. The
Korea Biz Dialogue will raise awareness about Malaysia’s investment environment, and
provide Korean investors with useful information and updates on the recent changes in
policy and law related to business. Through the dialogue, Korean investors will have a
chance to acquire business knowledge and skills for them to troubleshoot their own issues in
