WHEN LAST WE MET: On Nov. 1, 2003, in Ithaca, defense was the name of the game as the Bombers topped the Statesmen 14-7 at Butterfield Stadium. Hobart got on the board first when DAVID SZENTESY ’04 recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown. Ithaca tied the game late in the first half on Josh Felicetti’s first touchdown pass and took the lead late in the third quarter on his second TD toss. Felicetti was 18-of-29 for 249 yards. Ithaca racked up 401 yards of offense, but finished minus two in turnover margin thanks to three fumbles. Hobart linebacker TONY CLEMENTE ’06 had a game-high 16 tackles. GIVE ME LIBERTY: Hobart is the four-time defending Liberty League Champion. Since the league was founded in 1995 as the UCAA, the Statesmen have worn the conference crown 10 times: 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. The home team has won the past five meetings in the series, but this will be the first game between the two schools since 2003. Coach MIKE CRAGG is 2-7 against Ithaca Head Coach Mike Welch. October 4 • Noon 4-6, 3-4 Liberty Alumni Stadium POLL POSITION: The AFCA and D3football.com final regular season polls had different takes on Hobart’s third consecutive undefeated regular season. The coaches moved the Statesmen up one spot to No. 7 in the nation while the D3football.com voters bumped them down one spot to No. 9. Hobart has been nationally ranked in 37 consecutive D3football.com polls, including the preseason and final season rankings. The last time Hobart was unranked by the website was the final poll of the 2011 season. W 28-23 THREE-PEAT: Senior defensive end TYRE COLEMAN collected his third consecutive Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year award on Wednesday. A four-time All-Liberty League first team selection, he has 38 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, and six pass breakups this season. Coleman leads the league and ranks 17th in the nation in sacks and paces the conference and ranks 24th in the nation in tackles for loss. He produced a season-high 3.0 tackles for loss at St. Lawrence and has recorded two sacks three times. FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Senior offensive lineman ALI MARPET earned a share of the Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year award. Hobart’s left tackle is the first offensive lineman to earn a share of that award. A three-year starter, Marpet is making his third appearance on the All-Liberty League first team. He helped Hobart average 5.2 yards per carry and 224.6 yards rushing per game while passing for 170.4 yards per game. Marpet did not allow a sack this year while helping the Statesmen lead the league in third down (47.3%) and fourth down (69.2%) conversion. BECAUSE IT’S THE CUP: Hobart closed out the regular season with a 28-23 win over Rochester in the annual Centennial Cup game. The Statesmen went into halftime with a 21-0 lead, but the Yellowjackets rallied with 16 straight points to start the second half. Hobart went up 28-16 on junior running back CONNER HARTIGAN’s 55-yard touchdown run out of the wildcat formation early in the fourth quarter. UR scored with 90 seconds left to make it 28-23, but the Statesmen recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock. Hartigan rushed for a game-high 114 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries (8.8 yds/att). Sophomore linebacker MICHAEL HARPER posted a team-high 11 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, and an interception. Both Hartigan and Harper earned a spot on the Liberty League Weekly Honor Roll. The Saints came into the game ranked fourth in the nation in passing yards allowed (105.1/g) and 39th in rushing defense (114.3 yds/g), but the Statesmen produced 219 on the ground and 273 through the air. Both totals are the most allowed by SLU this season. THE HARD WAY: Despite piling up nearly 500 yards of total offense, Hobart’s victory at St. Lawrence didn’t come easy. The Saints entered the game fifth in the nation in turnover margin (+2.0/g) and padded that stat with three fumble recoveries and a pair of interceptions. The Statesmen haven’t turned the ball over that many times in a single game since Oct. 9, 2010. On that day, Hobart committed six turnovers (4 INT, 2 FUM) and beat Union 41-35 in double overtime. The Statesmen haven’t been minus five in turnover margin (or worse) since Sept. 25, 1999. On that day, Hobart was minus six with seven giveaways and lost to Union 20-14. PLAYING WITH THE LEAD: Hobart had not trailed its opposition through the first eight games this season. At St. Lawrence, the Statesmen trailed three times, including twice in the fourth quarter. It was the first time Hobart overcame a pair of fourth quarter deficits to win since Oct. 9, 2010, when the Statesmen beat Union 41-35 in double overtime. The Dutchmen led 28-21 with 12:47 left in the fourth quarter and 35-28 with 2:58 remaining. Hobart tied the game with 58 seconds left in regulation. McCOOL AS THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PILLOW: First-year kicker WILL McCOOL kicked the game-winning field goal with 63 seconds remaining at St. Lawrence. The 32-yard boot was just his second collegiate try and his longest attempt. McCool was named the Liberty League Special Teams Performer of the Week and the ECAC Northwest Co-Special Teams Player of the Week. SACKED: Hobart’s defense rang up a season-high seven sacks at St. Lawrence. Senior defensive tackle TROY JOHNSON notched half of them, pulling down the Saints’ signal caller a career-high 3.5 times. He was named the Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week and earned a spot on the D3football.com National Team of the Week. NEGATIVE CAMPAIGN: Hobart’s swarming defense has recorded more than twice as many tackles for loss this season (72) as the opposition (28). The Statesmen made a season-high 11 tackles for loss last week against Rochester. Hobart has kept its foot on the gas in the second quarter too, holding a 120-32 scoring advantage. BLOCK PARTY: Hobart has blocked six kicks this season, 16th in the nation, including two against Union on Nov. 1. Junior JACOB STANLEY and senior FAJRI JACKSON broke through the Dutchmen protection to get their hands punts in the second and third quarters, respectively. STAN THE MAN: Speaking of JACOB STANLEY, his full stat line from the Union game is quite impressive. The second team All-Liberty League selection finished the game with seven tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack, a blocked punt, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a 44-yard fumble return for a touchdown. It was his first scoop and score at any level of football. PRODUCTIVE COMMITTEE: From the start of preseason camp, Hobart’s offense has used a running back by committee and that approach has been very productive. Junior CONNER HARTIGAN, junior ALEX FURTADO, and sophomore BRADLEY BURNS have combined for 1,381 yards and 15 touchdowns on 246 carries. That’s 5.6 yards per carry. Fullbacks senior DOMINIQUE ELLIS and junior CHRISTOPHER HOLOMAN add an additional 637 yards and 13 touchdowns on 108 carries. As a team, the Statesmen are second in the Liberty League in yards per carry (5.2). Three of the five— Ellis, Furtado and Hartigan—received all-conference recognition this season. POCKET PROTECTORS: Hobart’s offensive line, with four All-Liberty League selections, has been dominant this season. The Statesmen lead the nation in tackles for loss allowed (2.8/g) and are third in sacks allowed (0.6/g). Hobart has only allowed six sacks all season. CRUNCH TIME: Hobart’s offense has been outstanding on third and fourth down this season. The Statesmen are first in the Liberty League and 26th in the nation in third down conversion (.473, 71-of-150). On fourth down, Hobart is first in the league and 12th in the nation (.692, 18of-26). REGULAR SEASON RUN: With its win over Rochester, Hobart has won 30 consecutive regular season games. The Statesmen won their 2011 regular season finale over Rochester, and ran the table in 2012 (10-0), 2013 (9-0), and 2014 (10-0). Hobart hasn’t suffered a loss in the regular season since Nov. 5, 2011, when they fell to Rensselaer 29-28. HERE’S TO YOU MR. ROBINSON: Senior wide receiver TROY ROBINSON was a semifinalist for the 2014 National Football Foundation’s William V. Campbell Trophy, college football’s premier scholar-athlete award. A chemistry major with minors in health care professions and environmental studies, Robinson is a Druid (Hobart College’s senior class honor society). He has been named to the Dean’s List four times and is a three-time Liberty League All-Academic selection. Robinson was an inaugural recipient of the Statesmen Scholar-Athlete award at the 2014 Block H Awards Dinner. He has also earned membership in the Orange Key and Chimera honor societies. The two-time Academic All-District selection received the Gordon L. Richardson ’33 Memorial Prize given to a Hobart junior premed student with strong academic credentials and a concern for humankind. HEAD OF THE CLASS: Four Statesmen were named to the 2014 CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 Football Team. Seniors TROY ROBINSON, ELVIN SOUFFRANT, and NOLAN TORAN and sophomore PATRICK O’CONNELL were honored for their combination of academic and athletic excellence. All four will now appear on the Capital One Academic All-America ballot. HEAD OF THE CLASS II: The Liberty League announced its All-Academic Teams this week as well. Hobart placed 13 student-athletes on that honor roll: seniors PATRICK CONLAN, TROY ROBINSON, ELVIN SOUFFRANT, and NOLAN TORAN, juniors CONNER HARTIGAN, NICK LIVERIO, COOPER MERRILL, and YANNI ZULIA, and sophomores SEAN BRIGHT, SEAN CUNNINGHAM, PATRICK O’CONNELL, NICK TESTANI, and MITCH WAGNER. THE LONG RUN: Hobart gained a season-high 404 yards on the ground against Merchant Marine on Sept. 27. It’s the most rushing yards by the Statesmen since gaining 442 yards at St. Lawrence on Sept. 29, 2001. Junior ALEX FURTADO led the charge with 98 yards and two touchdowns. Junior CONNER HARTIGAN added 90 yards and two TDs, including a 75-yard gallop. Senior DOMINIQUE ELLIS and sophomore BRADLEY BURNS each scored once. Hobart has one game with six rushing touchdowns in three consecutive seasons. The Statesmen haven’t scored more rushing TDs since hanging seven on St. Lawrence in 2001. The program record is nine set in 1953 against Kenyon. RUNNING THE WRONG WAY: Hobart’s run defense has been so thoroughly dominant this season that two foes have ended the day with negative rushing yards. Curry ended up 30 yards in the hole after getting sacked three times and having a wild snap from center result in a long loss. St. Lawrence was 16 yards in the red after suffering seven sacks and a wild snap from center. HE’S THE BOSS: Now in his 20th season, Head Coach MIKE CRAGG has a career record of 132-53. He’s been voted the Liberty League Coach of the Year nine times and was the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2012. Cragg is assisted by AARON BACKHAUS ’00, JACK DANIELS, KEVIN DeWALL ’00, JON DRACH, TOM ELDER ’14, NICK GRANGE, MIKE GREEN ’14, JOHN MANLEY, PAT MARTIN, KYLE O’LAUGHLIN ’11, and MARC TAPSCOTT. OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: Seniors MIKE BERKOWITZ, PATRICK CONLAN, ALI MARPET, MATT McGRIFF, JACOB PRICE, and TROY ROBINSON were elected by their teammates to serve as captains for the 2014 season. SCOUTING REPORT: Ithaca clinched the Empire 8 Championship and a spot in the NCAA playoffs with a 19-8 victory over St. John Fisher on Nov. 8. The Bombers finished the year with a 7-3 overall record after a heart-breaking 23-20 loss in the regular season finale at SUNY Cortland. Ithaca is 3-2 on the road this season. The offense is averaging 26.6 ppg and 344.0 yards per game (111.1 rush/232.9 pass). The Bombers are sixth in the nation in completion percentage (.676) and 13th in time of possession (33:47). Senior quarterback Tom Dempsey has completed 67.7 percent of his passes (12th in the nation) for 2,212 yards and 21 touchdowns against just eight interceptions this year. Ithaca has six receivers with 10 or more catches led by senior wideout Vito Boffoli’s 55 receptions for 533 yards and five touchdowns. Senior fullback Ben Cary has 43 receptions for 370 yards and a team-high eight touchdowns.
