LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
C
hanukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, solstice, a mix or even a lack of holidays—December is one of those times
when many of us are acutely aware of our family traditions, or how we’ve change them from those of our
childhood. While many of us know Chanukah is the festival of lights, a less well-known theme of the holiday
is taking pride in our culture by placing a menorah in our window, and publically showing the pride of our
Jewish heritage.
This December, each of us, of every culture and background, will enrich our community as we proudly
share our own traditions. And, as a new calendar year begins, we hope that your engagement at the 14th Street
Y will enrich your life as you reflect on your own traditions and renew commitments to what matters most to
you in the New Year.
For me, I have made family time and health and wellness priorities, so you will see me weekly with my
trainer Glenna in the fitness center, and also bringing my family to play with me at our new Pause/Play
Saturday afternoon programs. While my kids may choose New Country Day Camp in the City sports while
my husband meditates and I go to yoga, I know that being together for family swim or Havdalah (a short
ceremony ending Shabbat and welcoming a new week) will provide meaningful family time. I hope that you
will bring family and friends to enjoy these programs, lectures and classes—I hope to see you at Pause/Play
programming on 12/13, 1/24, 2/28 or 3/28, from 2 PM – 6PM .
If you’re craving meaningful, thoughtful and entertaining experiences, then don’t miss our LABAlive
performances. LABA: A Laboratory for Jewish Culture is our signature arts program where accomplished
artists create new works based on classic Jewish texts, each year under different themes. LABA’s theme for
the year is TIME, and our LABAlive performances will showcase these artists and these works in progress to
provide opportunities for you to experience a deeper understanding of classic stories and themes. LABA was
thrilled to be named as one of the top 50 most innovative Jewish programs in North America for the Slingshot
Guide, 2014–2015. LABAlive performances and LABA events are an intersection for connection, entertainment
and learning. Please visit labajournal.com for more information and tickets.
As you reflect on your traditions and renew your commitments to what matters to you, we are here to
help you make your goals a reality. We have endless opportunities to help you reach your health and wellness
goals, to support you in making your children and families thrive, and to have cultural, learning and arts
experiences that enrich your life.
As we reflect on what is important to us, we also work to give back to our communities and to support
causes that share our priorities. During your reflections, I hope you’ll consider supporting our community
by giving to the 14th Street Y. Your support is crucial to our ability to provide the level of excellence in
programming and service that the Y community demands and deserves. Each year, the 14th Street Y serves
over 10,000 people through our health and wellness center, education and enrichment programs, and
innovative arts programming. Membership and program fees alone do not cover the costs of running a
community center. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Y relies on annual support from you—
our community and friends—to help close this financial
gap and fulfill our mission as a center for community

May December be light-filled as we each proudly
share of our own traditions, enriching this community—
and may we go into the new calendar year filling the 14th

commitments!

THE 14TH STREET Y
AFTERSCHOOL
PROGRAM
The 14th Street Y Afterschool Program is proud to
be a chartered member of the Boys and Girls Club
of America.
GRADES K – 5TH
The philosophy at the 14th Street Y Afterschool is that
programming should center on engaging heads, hands,
and hearts. Each day includes snack and homework
help, plus swimming in our indoor pool on both
Monday and Friday afternoons. Your afterschooler
will engage in a class of their choosing (3-4 choices per
day) that centers on movement, the arts, or exercising
their brain. Our signature enrichment classes are
taught by our counselors and professional teaching
artists and include African Dance, Gaga and Chess/
Checkers/Board Games, Science, and more. When you
register, you will receive a list of class choices before
the beginning of the semester. Together, you and your
afterschooler can pick enrichment classes that they
will enjoy.
In addition to the enrichment activities
offered by afterschool, children can take a variety
of dance, swimming, or athletic classes. A full list of
enrichment activities are posted on our website at
www.14streety.org/afterschool. Our staff will escort
them to and from their classes. Parents can register
their children for a full week, or any number of days
in the week, for either the full year or the semester.
Tuition includes free pick up from the following
schools: PS 40, PS 19, Children’s Workshop, The
Earth School, and East Village Community School.
NEST+M, PS 110, and Epiphany require an additional
transportation fee. We also pick up from extended
day programs and have a special pick up for Success
Academy students. Inquire with Chloe Markowitz at
[email protected] or call at 212-780-0800

safe learning environment for your children to play.
Students will also learn:

DEVELOPMENTAL
MOVEMENT CLASSES
A moving body is a learning body. As the latest brain
research shows, exercise and movement greatly
impact babies’ neurological development and are
nutrients that feed babies’ growing bodies and
minds. The following developmental movement
classes utilize movement patterns and brain-building
exercises designed to encourage, strengthen and
challenge body awareness, core support, alignment
and early learning.
Led by Parenting Center staff Meredith Wright.
Lap Babies and Crawlers
Ages 2 – 12 months
Lap babies and crawlers warm up with developmental
movement patterns with fun songs and dances that
strengthen the body and stimulate the mind. Each
week babies are given opportunities to focus on a
specific skill such as balance, depth perception and
coordination.
Cruisers and Walkers
Nanny and Me
Ages 12 – 18 months
Ages 6 – 15 months

walking prepare for these
milestones by challenging
balance, coordination and

a specific skill through

that include climbing, balance, spatial awareness,
and coordination.
This music and movement class celebrates the special
relationship between caregivers and their little ones.
Children will engage in developmental movement
patterns through interactive play, partnered play,

PRELUDE TO
PRESCHOOL
Two x Two: Non-Separating
PRESCHOOL 2015-2016
Ages 22 – 28 months
Your child is exploding with energy and an evergrowing curiosity about the world while you’re just
trying to keep up with the dynamo! Our 2x2 program
will channel that energy and satisfy that unbounded
curiosity through a lively mix of music, dance, gym,
art, and creative play activities. Adults remain in the
classroom for the full year. Children enjoy a packed
lunch together in the classroom.
MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS, 11:15 AM – 12:45 PM
SEPTEMBER 2015 – JUNE 2016
Two x Two: Gradually Separating
Educational research shows that emotional security
is the true foundation of learning. This preschool
preparation program will stimulate your child’s
social, physical and cognitive development while
safeguarding that security and comfort throughout
the separation process. In the fall, adults provide
a reassuring presence as your child engages in
art, music, yoga, story time, cooking, creative
movement, and imaginative play. Later in the fall,
adults gradually leave the room, allowing children
to fully focus on their daily activities, their budding
friendships, and their newfound independence.
Ages 31 – 38 months
Now We Are Three is a separated, year-long preschool
alternative program for 31-38 month-olds that
introduces children to the structure and content
of a preschool setting. Through a combination of
individual and group projects, art, music, creative
movement, storytelling and outdoor play, Now We Are
Three promotes independence, creativity, socialization
and confidence within an educational setting, while
preparing children for a longer preschool day the
following year.

and families. Our children are given great respect and
valued as competent, intelligent and capable people with

Emilia and Bank Street approaches, we fill our classrooms
with the rich and varied materials children need to do their
daily jobs and deeper investigations.
• individualized play and group collaborations
• a dedicated art studio
• sunny, spacious classrooms
• large rooftop playground
• use of our indoor full-sized gym
• community-based field trips
• intergenerational community events
• swimming for our oldest children and those in
our extended day program
• ongoing school placement advisement
Our certified professional, enthusiastic and nurturing
staff engages children in stimulating learning partnerships.
Curriculum is facilitated through choice and through
project work as they experiment in science, linguistic and
mathematical literacy. Children’s explorations are further
enriched by art, movement/music and storytelling led by
the 14th Street Y’s LABAkids professional teaching artists.
Weaving together Jewish values and traditions within
an age-appropriate and all-inclusive setting, the 14th Street Y
Preschool welcomes families from all backgrounds and reflects
the community in which we live.
The Director of the 14th Street Y Preschool, Elizabeth Hirsch,
