RE-IMAGINE MISSIONS in a changing world.
The Annual Love Light
Christmas Musical
Saturday, November 15 First Baptist Church provided for the church and
community a Mission Summit using the theme RE-imagine Missions in a
changing world. On Sunday, November 16 we experienced one way to live
out this theme as our children and youth brought Operation Christmas Child
shoeboxes filled with Christmas gifts to the altar.
sponsored by the
Habersham Medical Center Auxiliary,
Tuesday, December 2nd
at 7 p.m.
in the FBC sanctuary.
Following the laying on of hands and blessing the boxes we viewed some
of the places and children receiving the boxes around the world, many who
have never heard The True Story of Christmas.
Admission is free.
For us at First Baptist this marks the beginning of the Season of Thanksgiving
and Christmas! We will have many opportunities during this season to offer
gratitude and to Love the World as God loves us.
A love offering will be taken with
proceeds going to the Habersham
Medical Center Foundation, Inc.
May a worthy offering for missions be
part of your Christmas observance!!

On The Journey
I noticed it as soon as I walked through the sliding doors. Christmas
Music. On Saturday, November 1st. In Walmart! It greeted me with a warm
“welcome back” like one of the store’s traditional older greeters.
I heard some grumbling from some people about Christmas music as
I walked around the store. Friends posted on social media complaining they
weren’t ready for Christmas. “It is too soon,” they say.
I don’t mind Christmas music in November because my family LOVES
Christmas music. We subscribe to XM radio by Halloween each year just to
have 4 (and growing) stations of Christmas music to enjoy for 2 months. Marcia
likes the standard Holiday songs. I lean towards the Country Christmas channel. The girls switch channels from song to song. If XM could afford a year
round Christmas station – I’m sure we would listen.
The reactions to Christmas music in November jolted my thinking. I
wonder, who is, really, ever ready for Christmas? It’s the middle of November
and on the front of our Newsletter are the many FBC Advent events and worship celebrations – and Thanksgiving is still over a week away.
Yet, there – just a few days after Thanksgiving is the first Sunday of Advent, November 30. Like Christmas music on the day after Halloween, we will
be lighting the first Advent candle with Thanksgiving turkey still in the fridge.
Are we ever ready for Christmas?
Soon, our December will be full of activities, Christmas parties, school
concerts, and shopping. We will work hard to remember where we are supposed to be and try hard to remember the reason for the season. And before
we know it – Christmas Eve will be here. We will be counting our presents to
make sure we haven’t forgotten anyone. And still, we will wonder – are we
ready for Christmas?
I need to make one Christmas confession. I love to keep Christmas
decorations up long after Christmas. I love to drive home in January when
everything is so dark and see my Christmas lights reminding me of the power
and purpose of Christmas. To remind me of the Light of the World. I realized
long ago that often I wake up from the activities of December and wonder
was I ever really ready for Christmas? The lights allow me to live in the glow of
Christmas for just a little longer.
Whether you are ready now or will be in January, the Advent Season is
upon us. God is breaking forth in the world. The world in need of a Savior is
waiting. This is the story of the Gospel. In an unprepared world, God shows us
where no one expects – a stable in the Judean hill country town of Bethlehem.
Over the next week, let us celebrate Thanksgiving with our church,
family and friends. But don’t be surprised when Christmas shows up when you
least expect it.
I will see you on Sunday for our Thanksgiving Ingathering.
Pastor Eric

Dear FBC Family:
Men's Ministry
Ladies are invited
I want to thank you for all the good
wishes I received through cards, phone
calls, and emails during my recent illness.
I have been aware for many years that
you are a caring church, but through
my involvement with the Shepherd's
Ministry, I have become even more keenly
aware of that fact. You truly do live out
the motto of the Shepherd's Ministry,
"Bringing care from members who care,"
demonstrating to us that our church really
does care when we are going through
periods of illness, failing health, dealing
with grief, or some other difficult period
in our lives; as well as rejoicing with us
when we have a praise as we give thanks
for God's goodness toward us.

I cannot express in words how blessed
we have been by your church staff &

Everyone felt so at home here. Like the
body of Christ should be, your love and
Christlike spirit shone like the new day
Blessings on each of you as we work sun.
God Bless you all!
together toward those goals.
You have served many; now let us serve you.

FAITH FORMATION NEWS from Pastor John
PARENTS OF YOUTH PLEASE NOTE: Our next overnight youth retreat
is coming January 2 and 3, 2015 when our youth will attend the MOVE
Conference sponsored by the Georgia Baptist Convention. We are
working on making this as affordable as possible and will be sending
out more information in the weeks to come. This is a GREAT conference
to motivate young people to serve the Lord and will be held this year in
Athens. Please mark your calendars NOW and consider going with us as
a chaperone. It’s a great time of inspiration for adults too! To read more
about it, go to www.superwow.com/move. Featured artists this year are
LECREA and KARI JOBE, and my friend Clayton King will also be speaking.
It’s going to be a great way to start off the new year!
PARENTS Night OUT is coming December 5! We need LOTS of parents
and youth to help us on that Friday as we provide a great night for kids
while their parents do their Christmas shopping. Look for more details
coming soon on this event. If you would like to help, please contact
Macey Doran, our recreation ministry intern.
