WHO WE ARE
Susan G. Komen for the Cure: Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she
would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan
G. Komen for the Cure® and launched the global breast cancer movement. Thanks to events like
Komen Race for the Cure and Komen 3-Day for the Cure, we have invested nearly $2 billion to fulfill
our promise, becoming the largest source of
nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight to end breast

A MESSAGE FROM THE LOCAL TITLE SPONSOR
In 2013, H-E-B Grocery Company proudly celebrates its 11th anniversary as the Local Title Sponsor of the annual
Susan G. Komen San Antonio Race for the Cure®.
Established in 1997, the Komen San Antonio Affiliate has invested more than $14 million in community health and
research initiatives. In addition to funding breast cancer research through the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants
Program, the San Antonio Affiliate helps support innovative breast cancer screening, treatment and education for the
medically underserved of our community.
It is both an honor and privilege for H-E-B to be a part of such a vital nonprofit organization and to add value to a
mission that has laid the groundwork for some of today’s most promising breast cancer treatments.
Last year, H-E-B was the largest corporate and overall team for the event. More than 400 H-E-B Partners took part on
Race day to honor our employees, customers and the communities we serve.
I invite you to share in our collective team spirit and join us as a corporate sponsor of the 2013 Komen San Antonio
Race for the Cure where your support is especially critical this year as we strive for even greater success.
By joining us in making a difference, your sponsorship will ensure valuable support to help find a cure for a disease
that truly affects all San Antonians, either personally or through our friends, families and neighbors. Your support
could be the part of the funding that finds the cure.
I look forward to seeing you at the start line!
Sincerely,
Suzanne Wade President of San Antonio Food and Drug Division 4

EXAMPLES OF A FEW KOMEN GRANTEES
MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY
CommuniCare Health Centers is a Komen San Antonio
grantee. They are a full service family health care provider
that not only address all the basic health care needs of
patients, but with Komen funding, provides clinical breast
exams, screening and diagnostic treatment for low-income,
under- or uninsured women of San Antonio’s east and west
side.
In April of 2012, Lorraine M., a single mother of two, was
diagnosed with breast cancer and is a patient of
CommuniCare….“At the time of my diagnosis, I did not
have any health coverage and did not know where to go.
The nurse at CommuniCare gave me information about the
Susan G. Komen program. If it wasn’t for the program, I
wouldn’t have known what to do. I was diagnosed with
stage III breast cancer and now I am nearing remission. I
am so blessed. The Komen-funded program has saved my
life.”
SLEW Wellness Center, another local non-profit that
received Komen funding, provides emotional and physical
support for underinsured and low-income women who are
recovering from and/or undergoing breast cancer surgery,
chemotherapy or radiation treatment throughout Bexar
County.
University Health System (UHS) is one of the eight
organizations that received large grant funding from the Susan
G. Komen San Antonio Affiliate. UHS, in partnership with
Metropolitan Health District, assists low-income, uninsured, atrisk women with clinical breast exams, screening
mammography and advanced diagnostic procedures in
downtown, southwest, southeast and northside clinics in San
Antonio.
Grace C., who was diagnosed with breast cancer, received
assistance from University Health System…“Being a single
person with no insurance, University Health System Women’s
Breast Health Program has helped me financially pay for my
mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy. Funding from Susan G.
Komen has helped me get the care I need. I am so thankful for
University Health System and Susan G. Komen San Antonio.”

Komen San Antonio Grantees,

Breast Cancer Survivor Evelyn H. shares her experience as
a SLEW patient…“I am currently seeing improvements due
to the massage therapy and personal counseling that
SLEW Wellness Center provides. Thanks to SLEW and
Susan G. Komen, I have hope and now see that there is a
way to live the quality of life that we all deserve.”
