Presents: OSTEOPATHIC CONSIDERATIONS FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH Friday 2013-10-18 TO Sunday 2013-10-20 The Ontario Osteopathic Association has approved 9.25 hours towards COE credit Presenters Biography Mr Jason Haxton Jason Haxton, M.A., Director of the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine since January 2001. Prior to joining the museum, Jason was an active museum volunteer for over ten years and donated several osteopathic related artifacts to the collection. He is a member of several local historical groups and is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Health Education through the ATSU School of Health Management. Jason makes several international trips each year (Germany, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK) to promote the principles of osteopathic medicine through exhibits and providing historic research materials for DO’s worldwide at various osteopathic conferences. Jason often assists DO’s who are required to do a two-year dissertation in clinical research. With the help of Jason, many students will review Dr. Still’s ideas and early writings as a foundation for their current work. He works with the museum to publish a minimum of 4 osteopathic books annually and has co-published a book this past year “The Osteopathic Medicine Advantage”. He also facilitated the highly successful The Healer Within traveling exhibit which was exhibited at 20 science centers to an audience of over 2 ½ million visitors across the USA and in Canada in the past 10-years. Museum website: www.atsu.edu/museum Mr John O’Brien John O’Brien graduated at the British School of Osteopathy (BSO) in 1966 and practised as an Osteopath for 40 years in Oxford. He taught Osteopathic History and Clinical studies at the BSO (1987-1992), including 21 years as a moderator and final clinical competence examiner for the General Council and Register of Osteopaths and General Osteopathic Council. On retirement in 2006, he enrolled on a full-time Masters course at the five star rated History of Medicine faculty, Oxford Brookes University. Under the critical tutelage of his dissertation supervisor, Dr Elizabeth Hurren and her colleagues, he was able to acquire and utilize academic skills alien to Medicine and Osteopathy. These require one to see beyond narrative, discern the provenance and integrity of specific documents and understand the significance of historiography. Ironically these skills provide very useful perspectives to examine and observe Osteopathy: its past, present and future outcomes. He received a Merit award for his MA in the History of Medicine in 2007 and for his dissertation, UK Osteopathy: The First Fifty Years. Together with Dr Martin Collins and Robin Kirk , he cofounded The National Osteopathic Archive (NOA) in 2007. During the past seven years, he has been traveling throughout the United Kingdom collecting material from our institutions and individuals but also, accumulating oral history DVD interviews of senior members of the profession. In September 2011, the NOA was established at the BSO and continues to flourish independently as probably the best Osteopathic archive outside Kirksville, Missouri and the second best Naturopathic archive in Britain. John founded the National Osteopathic Archive History Society (NOAHS) in 2010, to foster friends of the NOA and organize four historical themed symposia per year. This year his book, Bonesetters: A History of British Osteopathy, was published and is now in reprint following its first edition being sold out. John has two children, Anna who is a forth generation Osteopath ( Her great grandparents, Charles Kenny and Helene Larmoyeux; grandparents, Helen Emilie Kenny and Philip Jackson were all KCOM graduates circa 1909 and 1938 respectively) practicing in Melbourne and Ed, a musician. Mr Justin Roche My foundation is in Osteopathy with 18 years experience practicing as a Corrective Exercise Specialist, Integrated Functional Health & Movement Specialist, High Performance Strength & Conditioning Coach, and Nutrition & Lifestyle Consultant, and many other skills and titles. I have trained some of Canada's top amateur and professional athletes, training 2 World Champions Boxing, 5 Olympians & 7 National Champions (Track & Field), 13 CIS National Champions, (Track and Field). I have also trained professional athletes from NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, MLS, CFL. I also work with Senior Executives, CEO's and Managing Directors and Partners of Toronto's Banks, Law Firms and other Toronto based companies. I have managed the personal training department of one of Toronto's most prestigious executive health clubs. I currently own and operate a private Health & Wellness studio in the downtown core of Toronto where I have been since 2006. Mr Chris Batten Christopher Batten's osteopathic education began in 1985 at the Maidstone College of Osteopathy under the watchful eye of the late, great John Wernham. After four years hard-labour there, he established his practice in 1989. Realising that there was so yet much to learn, he returned in 1991 to the college. He taught pathology and osteopathic principles and the applied mechanics of the spine and pelvis. He sought an integrated approach to pathology with the hope and understanding of the treatment of even the most clinical diseases, equating this with the knowledge and caution of contemporary medical studies. Whilst still teaching there, an opportunity arose to teach at The John Wernham International Academy of Classical Osteopathy at St. Joris-Weert, just outside Leuven in Belgium. There he taught regularly on their undergraduate program until he was able to run the busy undergraduate clinic between 1992 and 1993. In 1994, He returned to the UK and decided that glorious Devon really was where he wanted to be and so re-established practice. In 1999 he was asked to teach at postgraduate level for the Institute of Classical Osteopathy (ICO). By 2000 he was asked to be the Co-Chairman of the ICO, to write its Newsletter and later to take over running the Postgraduate course. This he did under the supervision and the cooperation of John Wernham. At the same time the college offered courses to groups from abroad. The initial students were educators of osteopathy from all over the globe. He then began teaching at various venues throughout Europe, Canada, Japan and, more recently, Russia. He has inevitably inherited the dogmatism and deep belief in the real potential in a traditional approach from many years at the side of arguable one of the greatest osteopaths in our profession's history, John Wernham; student of Littlejohn, himself a student of A T Still. Ms Miriam Elkan Miriam Elkan studied Classical Osteopathy with John Wernham, qualifying in 1995. She did a post-graduate training in Naturopathy at the London College of Naturopathic Medicine, where she is now one of the Directors. She has taught extensively, mainly for the Institute of Classical Osteopathy, the John Wernham College of Classical Osteopathy, the London College of Naturopathic Medicine and the Centre for Homoeopathic Education. She has a passion for teaching, and loves the challenge of making “dry” subjects interesting and “complicated” subjects simple. Areas of particular interest include the endocrine system, gynaecology, the digestive system and liver, ENT and cancer. Miriam has now set up a course in Naturopathy, specifically for Classical Osteopaths, being run in the UK as a collaboration between the Institute of Classical Osteopathy and the London College of Naturopathic Medicine. This topic goes back to the very crisis that beset the ASO in 1895 and JM Littlejohn pondered during the years 1901-1910. The tragedy was JML’s ideals formulated then but he jettisoned when he returned dejected to the UK in 1913. Prof. Stephen Tyreman and others like me, intend to widen interest in these ideas about failure of adaption and function as essential factors in the behaviour of chronic illness. At a time of pandemics, Osteopathy should be playing some role in combating them. This talk addresses how this profession can provide effective strategies through manual treatment. 15 minute break Break 10:00 am -10:45 am Lecture 2 - Chris Batten Treatment principles for women’s health This lecture will focus on concepts developed by Dr AT Still, JM Littlejohn and M Clark 30 minute break Break 11:15 am -12:30 pm Lecture 3 - Miriam Elkan and Chris Batten Anatomical causes of gynaecological problems - with practical demonstration There are anatomical considerations, particularly of pelvic and lumbar lesioning, that have a direct relationship to many gynaecological pathologies. Understanding these gives a key to successful treatment for many of these conditions. This lecture will include a 15 minute demonstration showing how leg rotations can be used to treat pelvic lesions, reach internal visceral and appeal to spinal centres. 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm LUNCH 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm Lecture 4 - Miriam Elkan Hormonal relationships in gynaecological diseases, and how to treat them There is a fascinating interplay between the different endocrine glands, so that any imbalances - particularly of the HPTA axis - will affect oestrogen and progesterone levels, and the gynaecological system as a whole. We will unravel these relationships, and look at how to address some of the core issues involved in gynaecological pathologies, using osteopathic treatment to address and rebalance the endocrine system. 15 minute break Break 2:45 pm - 3.45 pm Lecture 5 - Miriam Elkan and Chris Batten Hormonal relationships in gynaecological diseases, and how to treat them Continuing from the previous lecture, this session will include a treatment demonstration so that we can put theory into practice, applying our knowledge to the cases that we see. 15 minute break Break 4:00 pm - 4:45 pm Lecture 6 - Justin Roche Nutritional considerations for pregnancy/infertility. A nutritional guide to support the dynamics of pregnancy that address both the needs of mother and baby. Women’s anatomical cancer-related concerns will be briefly discussed. 15 minute break Break 9:45 am -11:00 am Lecture 2 - Miriam Elkan Aetiology of cancer and principles of treatment from an osteopathic/naturopathic perspective Part1 As osteopaths, we cannot make claims that we can treat cancer. However there are circumstances in which we can treat patients who have cancer. In addition, if we understand the aetiology of cancer from an osteopathic viewpoint, we may be able to include the principles of cancer prevention within our treatment of "healthy" patients. This lecture will include discussion of breast, ovarian and uterine cancer. 30 minute break Break 11:30 am -12:30 pm Lecture 3 - Miriam Elkan Aetiology of cancer and principles of treatment from an osteopathic/naturopathic perspective Part2 There have been many studies that demonstrate a more-favourable outcome for cancer patients who also address nutritional issues, and this lecture will discuss some nutritional approaches. However, as Osteopaths, we consider nutrition, we also look at the ability of the body to digest and assimilate food, and how we can assist this process with Osteopathic treatment. 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm LUNCH 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm Lecture 4 - Chris Batten Working with Vasomotion and Visceromotion Spinal issues can affect both the direct nerve supply to organs/tissues (visceromotion) and bloodflow to those area through the innervation of blood vessels (vasomotion). This can unbalance the sympathetic nervous system and splanchnics and predispose to malfunction/disease. If we are to treat conditions such as pelvic congestion and ovarian disorders, we need to work with spinal control of both visceromotion and vasomotion. 15 minute break Break 2:45 pm - 3.45 pm Lecture 5 - Chris Batten Treating through the stages of pregnancy/preparing for birth - including a practical demonstration. Treating a pregnant patient gives us two patients in one: we can benefit both mother and baby. Knowing how to focus treatment at each stage of pregnancy allows us to use the mother's already-changing body to maximise the effectiveness of treatment, and to prepare the mother for an optimum birth. 15 minute break Break 4:00 pm - 4:45 pm Lecture 6 - Justin Roche Exercise/Anatomy/Physiology related to post partum for mother. This lecture will address the anatomical/physiological requirements of recovery following child birth to the necessary strength training and movement patterns needed to prepare for the demands of active parenting.
