Gary S. Kopen, DO
Dr Kopen, 72, of
Phoenix, died March 16
at Huger Mercy Living
Center in Phoenix.
Born in Dearborn,
Mich, Dr Kopen earned
a doctor of osteopathic
medicine degree in 1961
from the Kansas City (Mo) University of
Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine and interned at the former Phoenix General Hospital.
AOA board certified in family medicine, Dr Kopen practiced in Phoenix for
25 years. He served as the chief of staff and
chairman of the Board of Trustees of
Phoenix General.
Dr Kopen served five years as a member
of the Arizona Board of Osteopathic Examiners in Medicine and Surgery. An AOA
life member, Dr Kopen was the 1988-89
president of the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association.
After retiring in 1987, Dr Kopen became
the medical director for Associated Bioscience in Tempe, Ariz.
Dr Kopen is survived by his wife, Patricia, two daughters and six grandchildren.

H.M. Patterson, DO
Dr Patterson, 101, of
Burlington, Iowa, died
March 23 at Bickford
Cottage in Burlington.
Born in Birmingham,
Mich, Dr Patterson
earned a bachelor’s
degree in 1929 from
Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pa, and a
doctor of osteopathic medicine degree in
1937 from the Kirksville (Mo) College of
Osteopathic Medicine-A.T. Still University.
AOA board certified in family medicine
and in osteopathic manipulative medicine,
Dr Patterson practiced in Mediapolis, Iowa,
for 51 years, retiring in 1989.
An AOA life member, Dr Patterson
served as the 1963-64 president of the Iowa
Osteopathic Medical Association. He was
a fellow of the American Academy of
Osteopathy.
Dr Patterson is survived by two sons:
Jeffrey J. Patterson, DO, of Madison, Wis,
and Michael M. Patterson, PhD, an associate editor of JAOA—The Journal of the

Michael V. Smith, DO
Dr Smith, 63, of Medford, NJ, died March
21 at Virtua West Jersey Hospital Marlton in New Jersey.
Born in Camden, NJ, Dr Smith earned
a bachelor’s degree in 1966 from St Joseph’s
College in Brooklyn, NY, and a doctor
of osteopathic medicine degree in 1973
from the Kansas City (Mo) University of
Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine. He interned at Kennedy
Memorial Hospital—University Medical
Center in Cherry Hill, NJ.
AOA board certified in family medicine
and osteopathic manipulative treatment,
Dr Smith practiced in Medford, NJ, until
retiring in 2005. He was working for Correctional Medical Services Inc at the time of
his death.
An AOA member, Dr Smith belonged to
the New Jersey Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons.
Dr Smith is survived by his wife, Joan,
two sons, three daughters, and several
grandchildren.
Harold B. Wackerle, DO
Dr Wackerle, 86, of La
Paz, Ind, died Jan 13 at
St Joseph Regional Medical Center-South Bend
(Ind) Campus.
Born in Deerfield, Mo,
Dr Wackerle served in
the US Army during
World War II, fighting in New Guinea and
in the Philippines. In 1950, he graduated
from the Kirksville (Mo) College of Osteopathic Medicine-A.T. Still University.
After interning at the former Detroit
Osteopathic Hospital in Highland Park,
Mich, Dr Wackerle practiced family
medicine in Lincoln, Mo, and was elected
the coroner of Benton County, Mo. He
then practiced in St Louis before settling
in La Paz for some 40 years. He retired in
1997. Dr Wackerle was affiliated with St
Joseph Regional and Memorial Hospital
in South Bend.
An AOA life member, Dr Wackerle
belonged to the Indiana Osteopathic Association.
Dr Wackerle is survived by his wife,
Evelyn, one son, one daughter and four
grandchildren.
Contributions may be made in Dr
Wackerle’s memory to the Salvation Army.
