About Jernbaneverket
History and obligations
Jernbaneverket was established in 1996 after
the former Norwegian State Railways (NSB)
was devided into a train company, NSB BA,
and an infrastructure manager, The Norwegian
National Rail Administration (Jernbaneverket).

• To provide Norway’s train companies
with a safe and efficient transport system
• To plan, improve and maintain the rail
network, including stations and freight
terminals
• To manage railway traffic and provide
traffic information
• To allocate track capacity between
different train companies

Including iron ore and cross-border traffic
the Norwegian railways transported more
than 31 million tonnes of freight in 2015.
About 10,6 million tonnes were domestic
freight traffic.
