Jernbaneverket’s logistics go paperless with EVRY
EVRY has won a contract to develop and supply a new, digital storage management
system for Norway’s National Rail Administration (Jernbaneverket). The new system
will give Jernbaneverket complete digital control over all components stored at 120
locations throughout Norway.
Oslo, XX April, 2015 – EVRY, in cooperation with APX Systems, is to develop a new
logistics system for Jernbaneverket’s 120 storage locations across Norway. The system will
enable paperless management of Jernbaneverket’s total inventory of components, with a total
value of approximately NOK 500 million.
This paperless inventory management system will allow Jernbaneverket to improve its
utilization of resources, maintain a more accurate inventory, accelerate delivery times, and
reduce logistics-related costs. Once the new system is implemented, employees at
Jernbaneverket’s storage locations will be equipped with handheld barcode scanners and
tablet computers instead of paper pick lists. This will improve efficiency and reduce manual
picking errors.
The contract covers system development and implementation, as well as 10 years’
maintenance, and has a ceiling of over NOK 20 million. The project represents a collaboration
between EVRY and its technology partner APX Systems.
Improving the supply chain
By digitizing and automating the order flow, Jernbaneverket will boost the efficiency of its
logistics and the distribution of supplies across the organization. The logistics system will
quickly and easily provide analyses and overviews of existing and predicted consumption and
purchasing frequencies for different components.
“With a wide range of equipment, Jernbaneverket often needs to analyse demand and
purchasing frequency,” says Gorm Frimannslund. “Many of the components are used very
rarely, but once demand arises their supply is critical. This new system will give
Jernbaneverket a prognostic tool that will easily provide analyses and overviews of existing

and future consumption, purchasing frequency for different components, and an overview of
equipment that is critical in connection with particular events.”
By introducing this new storage and logistics solution, Jernbaneverket will unify the
management of several different storage systems. At the same time, users will be able to order
supplies directly from the storage locations. This means that planning and purchasing of all
inventory items will be done through the unified system. The system is designed for use on
mobile units and will run on both iOS and Android, and will include rugged devices used
onsite to scan components entering and leaving the storage locations. Right from the start, the
project has prioritized user-friendly and intuitive interfaces. The system is role-based, so that
each individual user has a system tailored to his or her needs. The increased use of electronic
solutions reduces manual labour and makes the handling of supplies more efficient, while also
ensuring that Jernbaneverket’s balance sheet accurately reflects its inventory. The system also
offers a powerful prognostic function that will support inventory planning and maintenance
right down to individual items.
“Realising these goals will improve many people’s working days. We have kept the enduser’s needs in mind at all times,” says project manager Vidar Fålun. “The storage system is
intended to provide ample support to our core business. In other words, end users will have
access to meaningful data to support their decisions, so that they can carry out their important
work in a satisfactory manner. The system will also enable our supplies section to deliver
components faster and more efficiently to projects and maintenance operations.
Some components are required only rarely, but the need for them is critical in particular
circumstances. By identifying these components, Jernbaneverket can also strengthen its
supply chain and identify the particular suppliers to which it needs critical access, and those
with which it should enter into contracts, for example for 24-hour access. The new system
will also allow Jernbaneverket to reduce obsolete stock by identifying components and
equipment that will soon be phased out, allowing it to reduce the purchasing or amend
issuance of particular items.
The logistics solution will give Jernbaneverket ample data with which to analyse and improve
the efficiency of its storage operations, in particular with regard to their location in relation to
current needs.

“In major logistics projects it is often critical to integrate new solutions with existing
accounting and maintenance systems,” says Håkon Kvåle at EVRY. “EVRY’s experience and
expertise gained from major projects meant that we could easily and safely integrate
Jernbaneverket’s existing Agresso accounting system, and Movex and Maximo maintenance
systems, with the cutting-edge technology of APX Systems, EVRY’s supply partner, within
the fields of system flow, integration, RFID and barcode technology. The result is a complete
solution that also provides excellent recycling of data and gives Jernbaneverket a high quality
tool for reporting and documenting resource usage in relation to rules and regulations, and in
relation to the State as owner.

Jernbaneverket’s new logistics system is under development, with implementation planned for
autumn 2015.
