Betty has provided an interesting article on the Registration of Aliens during WW1 as published in the Standard for this months feature item. Our ongoing series in Marie's Memorabilia on local schools continues as does our Death Notices from the Hamilton Spectator and our hard working research officer Betty is back with her Warrnambool & District Historicals. ************************************* THE AREA ADMINISTRATORS CORNER Dear Members and Friends, Our first Beginners Class for 1993 was held on Saturday, 20th April and was well attended. A number of members spoke on various topics and the day was quite successful, some members have used information gained to further their research. It is hoped to have further days later in the year. You may be interested to know that the Death Notices taken from the W'bool Standard, Jan 1982 - Dec 1992 have been published on microfiche. This index covers about 7,500 deaths. Copies of notices are available from August 1982 onwards for a small charge. There are 6 microfiche in the set which can be purchased for $15.00 by writing to PO Box 607, Warrnambool. Last month I mentioned the removal of the Purnim Cemetery and that the Woodford Cemetery had never opened. I have no further information on the Woodford Cemetery but Doug has located the site of the Purnim Cemetery on an old Parish Map. The recreation reserve in Bryan O'Lynn Road, behind the Presbyterian Church was originally the Purnim Cemetery. Till the next time good luck with your researching Regards to all Marie Boyce Area Administrator ************************************* REGISTRATION OF ALIENS DURING WORLD WAR 1 (As published in the 'Warrnambool Standard') The Federal Government has secured authority under the War Precautions Act to take steps to keep a vigilant watch on all aliens in the Commonwealth and those entering at the various ports. Regulations issued on Friday relating to the registration of aliens on and after 31st October next apply to alien friends, as well as alien enemies, over 15 years of age. Police officers in charge of police stations are to be the alien registration officials. Other members of the police force. officers of the customs, naval and military authorities, and authorised persons, are to be officers under the regulations for general purposes. Provision is made under which aliens may be exempted by the Minister from the regulations. The exemptions include consuls and their staffs, masters and crews of public vessels of any Government. Children of alien residents not being natural born British subjects must be registered in the same way as aliens. Masters and crews of vessels, if aliens, must register at the first point of call in the Commonwealth. Every alien. whether registered or not, who changes his place of abode must, within seven days, notify the fact to an alien registration officer. Giles and Andy GRAY purchase Frank VILLIERS' business. ************************************* REGISTRATION OF ALIENS (Cont from page 2) The keepers of every hotel, inn. boarding house and lodging house in Australia are required to enter in a register the names and nationalities of all aliens staying on their premises, together with the dates of their arrival and departure. their destinations, and any other particulars as may be required. Any officer may at any time require any person believed by him to be an alien to answer questions as to name, nationality, residence. movements or business. Power is given to officers to arrest without warrant any person whom they have reasonable ground to believe has committed an offence against the regulations. Page Five MARIE'S MEMORABILIA This month Marie presents Part 9 of her series of items on schools in Warrnambool and the surrounding district. Page numbers quoted after the school number are the page on which the history of the school is covered in book 2 of 'Vision and Realisation'. PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN THE VICINITY OF WARRNAMBOOL INCLUDING THE TERANG, MORTLAKE, CARAMUT, KOROIT AND PORT FAIRY AREAS. PART 9 MOYNE SWAMP School Number 2415 see page 932 Elizabeth Backler opened this school 1/8/1881. Fluctuating attendances caused the school to close and reopen. During 1888-9 it worked half time with SS Clonleigh. It finally closed 31/10/1889. YAMBUCK School Number 2458 see page 932 The first school at Yambuck was No 696 and dated back to the 1860's. It was taken over by the State until 31/3/1882 when it was struck off the roll and replaced by SS 2458 Samuel S Scott who was Head Teacher at 696 became Head Teacher at 2458. The school closed in 1949 for consolidation with Port Fairy. NIRRANDA EAST School Number 2475 see page 933 It is believed that this school opened about the turn of the century. In 1932 the building was removed and transported to Allansford. Instruction in the new building commenced 30/5/1933 under Robert A Oakley as Head Teacher. The small building sits in most attractive grounds and is very well equipped. DUTSON School Number 2638 (See DUNMORE School Number 2638) see page 934 This school was situated on the original Lindsay property at Bessiebelle and was first known as 3047 Bessiebelle East. From 1888 it was known as Dunmore. The school closed 31/5/1892. ECKLIN SOUTH School Number 2647 see page 934 The first school opened in 1885 with children coming from a distance of 6 miles. The building materials for the school arrived in Warrnambool by ship and then had to be transported to Ecklin South by bullock wagon. In 1936 the original school was shifted back from the road and a new school was erected. Page Six MARIE'S MEMORABILIA (cont) CURDIEVALE School Number 2705 see page 936 A site for a school had been reserved when the township of Boggy Creek was surveyed. Name changed to Curdievale when a Post Office opened there. The school was first known as Nirranda Township. In November 1885 1 Gardiner opened the school, working it half time with one at Wallaby Hill, Peterborough. Attendances declined and the school closed in 1893. The school reopened in 1924 in a new building. In July 1948 pupils were transferred to Timboon Consolidated. MEPUNGA EAST School Number 2762 see page 938 This school opened 17/6/1886. A new room was erected in 1888. From August 1902 Mepunga East operated half time with Nullawarre North SS 3206. A new school was erected in 1928 to accommodate 65-70 pupils. THE COVE (FORMERLY MEPUNGA) School Number 2827 see page 940 originally this school was called SS 2827 Mepunga. It was situated next to the Mepunga Presbyterian Church. Fire destroyed this school in 1887 and the new building was three miles further south towards Childers Cove and opened later that year. The name was changed to The Cove in 1933. The name came from Childers Cove, two miles away. where early in the 19th century a ship carrying bricks from England was wrecked. The ship was called 'The Children', 9 children perished in the wreck. hence the name Childers Cove. PURNIM WEST School Number 2905 see page 940/41 About 1850 a farmer. James McKenna from Ireland, settled in the district and was so perturbed at the lack of a district school that he built one on his own property and employed a teacher named Ryan. This school closed in 1870 and the children attended various schools owned by the State. Local farmers approached the Department with the aim of having a school built on land donated by Mr & Mrs Barber of 'Staywood Park, and SS 2905 was opened 261911888. Head Teacher was J J Edgoose. The school was enlarged to its present size in 1925. 10 children were enrolled in 1970. BESSIEBELLE School Number 3047 (see also BESSIEBELLE 1238) see page 944 Officially opened 23/2/1891 under Head Teacher Joseph McMillan, the school was located on the Lindsay property. Was also known as Bessiebelle East. The school apparently closed in 1894. See also DUNMORE 2638, page 934. CASSADY'S BRIDGE School Number 3082 see page 944/45 Situated 2.5 miles from Dennington and 2.5 miles from Warrnambool this school opened 19/1/1891 with Head Teacher Janet Ada McDougall. (15/9/1881) Newton Graves. about 22, son of George Graves of Daylesford. died at Drumborg on 9/2/1885. when a tree fell on him. Mrs Gray of Myamyn, who has eleven children died 81811881. At Sinclair near Heywood, on 5/2/1883. Francis Hamilton. aged 47 years. Frank left a wife and a large family. Stephen Hawker. an old man. died at Portland on 241511884. He was a brother of the Rev Mr Hay, of Moorwinstone. England. and a grandson of the Rev Robert Hay. DD, late vicar of Charles. in Plymouth. James (Cooper) Hay. aged 75. died at Portland on 10/5/1885 A C of E. he was born at Leith. Edinburgh. Scotland and was buried at South Portland on 12/5/1885. Mr Hayward. Portland Gaol Turnkey. died 26/4/1882 and was buried 28/4/1882. Patrick, aged 17, son of John Hickey of the Stony Rises. died at Heywood on 21/9/1883 and buried on 23/9/1883. Margaret, aged 74, a widow of John Hicks. died at Merino on 26/12/1882. John died there 18 months ago. At West Portland on Friday evening. 18/11/1881. John Arthur, fourth son of John and Isabella Hill. of this town. He was aged 21. and was buried at South Portland. His father is a school teacher. The wife. aged 54. of John Hill. Headmaster of Portland State School. drowned on 24/2/1883 and was buried on 26/2/1883. They have a grown up family. ? Hunt. a woman. died at Hotspur on 22/10/1883. At his residence, Victoria House. Portland, on 17/6/1882 of paralysis, John Huxley aged 83 years. At Portland. on 23/5/1882. of consumption. Agnes. the beloved wife of W H Jones. Her end was peace. She was a daughter of Mr Wright. late of Branxholme. and her husband is a farrier. Mary Jones aged 72 years. died at Narrawong on 10/11/1882. On Friday, 24/6/1881 at Portland, Sarah Anne, the beloved wife of Thomas McConachy and eldest daughter of the late Samuel Hutchinson, aged 21. She was buried at South Portland. Thomas is a shipping clerk. Malcolm McKenzie aged 63, of Myamyn, was found dead on 10/6/1882, leaving a wife and four young children. He came from Ross-Shire, Scotland and was buried at Digby on 13/6/1882. Robert McMahon. a Belfast grocer aged 70. died at Tyrendarra about 5/4/1885. John McRae aged 41, died at Merino last week. leaving a wife and family (28/10/1882). John Martin, a man, died in Portland on 1/8/1883. On 14/8/1884 at Maretimo, Portland. Robert Matheson aged 52 years. he was born at Laang, Sutherlandshire, Scotland in 1832 and was buried at South Portland on 17/8/1884. he left a wife and eight children and was a brother of the late John. He was President of the Portland Racing Club. Mrs Thomas Maxwell. about 30 of Condah. died 5/4/1883 leaving six young children. On 17/12/1881 at her residence. Merino, Anna Maria. the beloved wife of W D Meldrum. coachbuilder. She was a young woman who left a large family. She was buried at Merino on 19/12/1881. George Charles Roy aged 4 and a half months, son of Mr and Mrs Robert Milne of Portland, died 21/7/1883. Bernard Mooney, about 35. a travelling saddler. died at Merino on 24/12/1883. James Moore aged 70, was found dead at Merino Downs on 20/6/1884. Charles Mullen of Myamyn, died of fog fever on 1411011885 and was buried at Condah on 15/10/1885. He left a young wife. William, son of Duncan Munro. died at Portland on 30/12/1883 after a long and painfull illness and was buried on 1/1/1884. Two children of the Mutch family died at Merino recently. (10/1/1882) Joseph Newton. single and aged 32. son of John Newton of Bridgewater, died in the Portland Hospital on 271411881 and was buried in the North Portland Cemetery on 30/4/1881. On Tuesday 5/7/1881. at South Portland, Daniel Nicholson. late of Keswick, Cumberland and 15 years surveyor to Council of the Borough of Portland. aged 62 years. He left a wife and two children and was buried at South Portland on 7/7/1881. William and Thomas aged 11 and 12. sons of Patrick and Catherine O'Meara, drowned near Condah on 29/4/1883. Patrick O'Neil. a Myamyn selector and laborer, was killed by a train on 9/5/1885 leaving a wife and children. Owen Charles O'Reilly aged 75 years. a district squatter who recently lived in Portland. died at Mt Rowan near Ballarat. He was buried at South Portland on 131311885. Page Nine GOING'S ON AROUND THE LIBRARY NEW COMPUTER INSTALLED On the day of our AGM (11th March) our new computer was installed in the library. The machine is a 386sx 25mhz based system with a 5.25" floppy drive and a 85mb hard disk. MS Works software is loaded to provide the facilities needed by the Society such as wordprocessing, database, membership and mailing lists. It is proposed that an introductory course will be run in the next month for those members not familiar with this type of hardware and software. Date of course will be determined at April meeting. WORKING BEES As most members are aware a number of members get together on a Wednesday morning in the library at Flagstaff Hill to do research and some of the business of the Society. Over the past few months Helen and her helpers have accessioned all the additions to our library collection and rearranged the storage cabinets to provide easier access to resources therein, a number of members assisted Marie with the photocopying of the Beattie and Phillips Funeral Record books and a host of other smaller tasks have been achieved also. Current tasks in hand include the transfer of our card file (15,000 + cards) into the steel filing drawers from their existing shoe boxes. Some cards require trimming to fit, letters A thru G have been completed. Aurelin has commenced the sorting of the Beattie and Phillips material into alphabetical order, this has yet to be indexed and bound. If you can assist with these tasks please have a chat to Marie and she can advise how you can help. COMPUTERISING OF RECORDS The major reason for purchasing the Society's new computer system was to place some of our records onto computer for easier access, backing up of our material and to allow us to exchange material with other groups. The two major tasks currently confronting us are putting together an index for the Beattie and Phillips material on computer and placing our massive card file system on computer. If you have keyboard skills and would like to be involved in these projects please have a chat to Marie for further details. Remember, the more people who get involved the sooner we can complete these projects. The database layouts for these tasks have not as yet been finalised so any suggestions are most welcome. EXCHANGING MATERIALS A number of members have computers at home with MS Works software installed, this allows you to build files at home for loading onto the Society computer and also allows you to download files from the computer. If you can assist with indexing programs in this manner by working at home have a chat to Marie as she has a number of items that could be done in this way. LIBRARY ATTENDANTS As always we could do with more library attendants to open the library and in so doing generate some extra funds for the Society. If you can spare a few hours on a regular basis have a chat to Rosemary Archer and she can advise where vacancies exist on our roster.
