By CARA NASH W hile it may be Australia’s most progressive digital festival, Pause Fest is actually an event where forging personal connections remains its central goal. “Everyone is used to working behind closed doors and gathering in their own niche pockets or spending 24 hours online chatting away,” the festival’s founder, George Hedon, acknowledges. “Pause Fest 2014 is urging the creative community to take a moment out of their busy life schedules to pause and enjoy real-time connections.” In line with that sentiment, this year’s festival theme is ‘Connected’, and aims to bring together everyone from local creatives and entrepreneurs to academics and those simply interested in the possibilities of digital culture. “The theme needed to be simple, meaningful and effective,” Hedon relays. “The concept behind it was to bring together dubs “a full 360 experience” – is also packed with a series of free and ticketed events, which includes film screenings, interactive instillations and workshops. With the possibilities of the digital world often feeling overwhelming and everexpanding, Hedon hopes the festival can act as a filter for ideas. “We are all part of the digital culture whether we like it or not,” he says. “The problem with that is that there are so many voices and almost no platforms to filter the good from the bad. That’s part of Pause Fest’s mission – keeping the content to a high standard. I guess filmmakers are waiting for the culture to grow a bit so that they can extract stories from it like The Social Network, Downloaded, which is a story of Napster that we are actually playing at the festival, or something like The Fifth Estate. I think they are on it big time!” “PAUSE FEST 2014 IS URGING THE CREATIVE COMMUNITY TO TAKE A MOMENT OUT OF THEIR BUSY LIFE SCHEDULES TO PAUSE AND ENJOY REAL-TIME CONNECTIONS.” leaders of creative economy into one event that showcases the current state of Australian digital culture. The audience can hear more about motion, creative advertising, web, gaming, start-ups and the music industry’s latest trends via digestible keynote presentations, and all in one jam-packed and action-driven festival. The keynote format is very personal, forward-thinking and about the big picture, with Q&As after each presentation. The audience shouldn’t worry if they are not from the same industry as they will find a lot in common and probably learn something new that can be applied to their own business.” Along with these presentations and conferences, this year’s four-day, Melbourne-based festival – which Hedon At the end of the day, the festival is all about providing four days “that’ll inspire a year’s worth of work”. “Pause Fest’s intentions are big ideas that drive innovation, help you learn new skills for product launches, and offer a collaborative platform,” Hedon sums up. “I want people to use Pause Fest as a reason to engage with each other, with the festival and to take full advantage of it. The aim is to become the organic super-glue of digital culture in the simplest terms. Come meet the genius who sat beside you.” Pause Fest runs in Melbourne from February 13-16. Volunteer at www.supanova.com.au What’s the best thing about playing Tiberius on Spartacus? “Besides his incredible arc throughout the season, he’s a bad guy. And playing a bad guy is so much fun! He tried so hard to constantly prove himself to his father and everyone around him, and the lengths that he went to in order to achieve what he wanted was really interesting and exciting to play.” Have you been to Supanova before? If not, what are you expecting? “I haven’t! I can’t wait for the experience, and to meet so many awesome Spartacus fans.” Are you prepared to sign anything? Limbs, foreheads... “Why not!?” Are you a bit of a “geek” yourself? “You betcha! I’ve been the biggest Breaking Bad fan since day one, and shows like Game Of Thrones and The Walking Dead are just phenomenal. With movies, the Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit series fit right into my geek mode.” Which actor or director would you be most starstruck to meet? “The list is endless... with actors, I’d love to brain pick Leo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, and Al Pacino, just to name a few.
