WHEREAS, the Providence Journal is the only newspaper of statewide circulation in Rhode Island; and WHEREAS, citizens of the City of East Providence as well as all of the citizens of Rhode Island have long relied upon the death notices published in the Providence Journal to learn of the passing of a loved one, a family member, or a dear friend; and WHEREAS, the death notices were arranged according to the residency of the city or town of the decedent containing information about the services held in memoriam to the decedent allowing the citizens of the City of East Providence and all of Rhode Island to have sufficient notice to participate in those services or send condolences to the family of the decedent; and WHEREAS, the Providence Journal has stopped publishing death notices depriving the citizens of the City of East Providence and the state of Rhode Island of this important information thereby resulting in the loss of the opportunity to pay last respects to the decedent and family; NOW, THERFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of East Providence hereby requests that the Providence Journal reinstate its prior practice of publishing death notices for everyone who passes away in the State of Rhode Island arranged according to their city or town of residency so that friends and families can learn of the death of a loved one, family member, or dear friend and have the opportunity to pay their last respects to the decedent and the decedent’s family may find comfort in the care and sympathy of friends and loved ones.
