The Honourable Cordwainers’ Company 30 Annual General Meeting

The Honourable Cordwainers’ Company
30th Annual General Meeting
OCTOBER 24-26, 2014
The Honourable Cordwainers' Company 30th Annual General Meeting
in cooperation with Rhode Island School of Design – Division of Architecture & Design, Apparel
Design in Providence, Rhode Island
We are pleased to announce the Thirtieth Annual General Meeting of the Honourable Cordwainers'
Company. The conference provides opportunities to learn, and exchange knowledge on the history and
practice of traditional shoemaking and allied trades. The Honourable Cordwainers’ Company (HCC)
conducts an annual general meeting during the weekend closest to the 25th of October, St. Crispin's Day.
The HCC is a non-profit 501c (3) educational organization, incorporated in 1987 in Virginia, the home of
America’s first English shoemakers. Founded in 1984 by a small group of shoemakers and historians, The
HCC is dedicated to promoting the study, practise, interpretation and preservation of historical and
traditional shoemaking and allied trades. The guild promotes the historic preservation and research of the
craft, forms, tools, techniques, artifacts and all other aspects of shoemaking and allied trades; and educates
membership and the public about historical and traditional shoemaking and the allied trades. The annual
general meeting includes a general business meeting, and educational presentations and lectures by
members and guest-speakers, artisans and authorities, demonstrations, and visits to nearby museum
collections, as well as an exhibition of members' work and tools and items for sale or trade.
From its incorporation on March 22, 1877, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) has stood out as a leader
in art and design education, attracting extraordinary people who thrive in its creative culture. A premier
school of design in the United States, RISD was one of the first colleges of its kind in the country –
founded simultaneously with the RISD Museum of Art.
RISD was founded and nurtured by women – more than 40 years before women in America even gained
the right to vote. In 1877, the 34 members of the Rhode Island Women’s Centennial Commission voted to
invest their group’s surplus funding of $1,675 in founding Rhode Island School of Design. Today, RISD
features bespoke shoemaking classes and collaborative shoe design classes supported by the Apparel and
Industrial Design departments.
This didactic symposium will feature a workshop of leather material exploration, hosted by the Pelle
Conciata al Vegetale in Toscana (Tuscan Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium); the exhibit “Craft the
Leather”, an internationally travelling collection of leatherworks; footwear futures forecasting from SLEM
school of the Netherlands; selections from “In These Shoes, Bespoke Footwear in America” on display at
the RISD museum; selections from RISD’s own shoemaking program on display; as well as special access
to the RISD Museum of Art historical shoe collection.
It promises to be a wonderful weekend. We look forward to seeing you in Providence.
