Country Style
Bacon Chops
How quickly the summer has gone, it’s now
time to think of warming food to prepare when
the darker nights set in.
This is a quick dish which can be done while
your potatoes are cooking. If like me you like to
have everything on the go at once, then this is
definitely the dish for you.
Serves 4
1tbsp sunflower oil
4 thick bacon chops
2 small red apples cored and cut into wedges
2 tbsp calvados or brandy/whiskey
1tsp green peppercorns in brine (crush these)
2tsp Dijon mustard
200ml carton crème fraiche
1.
Heat oil in a large pan and fry bacon for
about 3 mins on each side, remove from
pan and put to one side.
2.
Add the apples to the pan and fry for 1
minute or until they begin to colour, add
the brandy and stir in the peppercorns,
mustard and crème fraiche to make a creamy sauce.
3.
Return the chops to the pan to reheat through before serving,
serve with mashed potatoes and stir fried cabbage or any veg
you prefer. This is a lovely chunky sauce which cuts through the rich
taste of the bacon.

THE OSILIGI MAASAI WARRIORS COME TO ST
WULFRAM’S CHURCH GRANTHAM
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 28TH 2.30PM
On Saturday 28th September the Osiligi
Maasai Warrior Troupe will perform in
concert at St Wulfram’s Church in
Grantham at 2.30pm, their first visit to the
town, whilst en route from Scotland to
the Southwest of England.
The Troupe are stunning performers.
Every performance they give sees them
receive rapturous applause, leaving
behind unforgettable memories for their
audience. This is their tenth year of
touring the UK, which has seen them
perform so outstandingly at many
prestigious venues, including the Cathedrals of Ely, Salisbury and Exeter.
The tours help the members of the Troupe raise money for their families and
their community, which is situated some 30 miles south of Nairobi, where life
is tough. Over the years, the tours and the charity (www.osiligi.org ) which
they brought about, have seen the lives of the Troupe and the families
around them, move from abject poverty, where for example, water came
from a stagnant pond some five miles away. Whereas, they now have fresh
clean water in two points in their community. The Troupe’s success and the
spin-off to the charity have subsequently seen the unhealthy kerosene, to
light their homes, now replaced by solar lighting, the building of a new
church and most wonderfully, a new school. The latter now has 105 pupils, all
sponsored by UK supporters.
The Troupe’s performance is a sensation to watch with all ages from five to
ninety five being enthralled and excited by their natural rhythm, song, and
their jumping, for which they are famous, is wondrous to watch! All
performances, which tell the story of their lives, are fully narrated and
audience participation a part of the show.
Tickets £8 Adults £4 Children available from Church Office (01476 561342) am
Mon-Fri, Guildhall Arts Centre 01476 406158 or Yorkshire Bank 10 High St,
Grantham. Proceeds from the event will be shared between the Troupe and the
St Wuilfram’s Spire appeal. A unique, unforgettable event, not to be missed!

LE BISTROT PIERRE – DINE WITH WINE
It is always good to say ‘thank you’ to friends, family and loved ones with something
of a surprise. My friend and colleague decided to take her mum to multi awardwinning Le Bistrot Pierre, restaurant. Pierre offers hearty and robust provincial
French cooking, at excellent value prices. Having several very tempting menus-from
regular lunch and dinner, to Soirée Gastronomique (six courses, offering a great
variety, with exceptional value, at £22.95) - Jenny and Margaret (Mum) both chose
the Dine With Wine menu, where each choice for every course is paired with a
different wine, at £22.95 and £27.95, for 2 or 3 courses.
This is Jenny’s Story. Welcomed, on this occasion, by David, the restaurant looked
impressive, including candle-lit tables. Starters of Homemade Coarse Pâté, with four
cuts of pork, served with cornichons plus sourdough toast, and the Salad of Lightly
Curried Crab Claw Meat, with plum tomatoes, lemon and dressed leaves were
superb, being paired with Saumur Rouge, from the Loire Valley and Sauvignon
Blanc, L’Evangéliste, respectively.
Mum’s Main course choice of Pan-Fried Chicken Breast, with braised leeks, shallots
and Moutarde Violette de Brive, was very flavoursome, cooked and presented to
perfection. A Corbières, Cuvée les Crozès, came with this dish. Also, my selection of
Scottish Pasture-Fed 21 day-aged Rib-Eye Steak, served with dressed leaves, pommes
frites and black pepper butter, accompanied by Grenache Noir, Gourmandises wine,
was excellent and a most splendid combination. Main courses are served with a
selection of fresh market vegetables.
The Mini Citron Flan and Chocolate Torte dessert, impressed Mum (and me), being
paired with the classic dessert wine, Sauternes. My choice of a Selection of French
Cheeses, presented with biscuits, celery and red onion confiture, plus Quinta Do
Crasto (late-bottled vintage port), made a really good conclusion to our dining
occasion, with excellent service by Natalie, Nick and Rob, throughout.
