CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A few
years back, veterinary
ophthalmologist Mark
Bobofchak provided an eye
exam to a therapy dog who
spent her days visiting nursing
home residents and hospital
patients.
The little Boston Terrier, he
quickly discovered, had
cataracts.
Bobofchak removed them and
the dog went on to comfort
children and seniors for a few
more years.

Doesn't matter if they're donkeys, horses or monkeys, he and 250 other members of the
American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (http://www.acvo.org/)in
the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico provide the free eye exams to service
animals every year.
On-line registration for those exams, which normally cost about $170, is required and
must be completed by April 30 at ACVOeyeexam.org (http://acvoeyeexam.org
/?reload). Additional details also can be found there.
To qualify, working animals must have been certified by a formal training organization
or program or be enrolled in one.
Those who go to the website are given a registration number and asked to contact a
local vet to schedule an appointment, which are first come, first served.
