"A lot of people think it takes too much time
to volunteer, but really it takes so little,"
McCall said. "It means so much to the
people you help, but also to the volunteer. If

Ball works primarily with the United Way
and the Ozarks Food Harvest. He said he
started volunteering in 2006 after he retired
and moved to Springfield from Kansas City.
"I thought I needed something to do to get
me off the couch," he said.
Beadle
He said his job as a mentor with O'Reilly
Automotive made for a good transition to
volunteer work.
"I like to help people," he said. "Some
people need a lot of help."
Former Council of Churches Director
Dorsey Levell, who helped found the award
20 years ago, spoke at the event and
summed up why volunteers do what they
do.
"The intent of mankind is to leave the world
a little better place," Levell said.
All 10 winners' photos will be displayed on
the Rosanna Bradshaw Memorial Wall of
Fame in the Busch Municipal Building.
Ball
Levell credits Bradshaw, the council's
associate director at the time, for coming up
with the idea.
"She took it on as a joint project with the
city," Levell said.
Bradshaw died before the first award
ceremony in 1991, but Levell said it could
not have happened with out her.
"She was a wonderful person," he said.
Including Thursday's winners, the Gift of
Time Awards has honored 200 people.
There were 63 nominees for this year's
awards.
