EAST LANSING — Federal officials have approved the cost and timeline for the halfbillion-dollar Facility for Rare Isotope Beams project at Michigan State

The U.S. Department of Energy on Thursday signed off on a $730 million project cost
for the groundbreaking nuclear science endeavor, including $635.5 million in federal
funding and a projected completion date of 2022. Those decisions are critical

milestones, and also include the go-ahead for beginning construction and purchase of
"long-lead" items—technical equipment that will take considerable time to build and
install.
"While we realize this is just one more step toward realization of this important
project for nuclear science and the nation," said MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon in
a statement, "it’s a significant step—evidence that FRIB continues to be well-managed

and that the scope, cost and the schedule of the project are where they need to be."
U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, both of whom have championed the FRIB's
cause since its outset, lauded the project's latest progression.
"This is great news for Michigan, for MSU and for science," U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, DMich., said in a statement. "It shows the Department of Energy's confidence in MSU's
management of the FRIB project. Now that we've cleared this important step, we'll
work hard to ensure Congress fulfills its role and makes the funding available to
complete this important project."
MSU has already begun site preparation for the FRIB, but construction cannot advance
until Congress appropriates the funding for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins Oct.

The FRIB will be a state-of-the-art national user facility allowing researchers to
pursue scientific breakthroughs by creating and studying elements that do not
normally occur naturally on Earth. Studying these rare materials, which often exist for
only a fraction of a second, can help scientists advance scientific research in many
fields, including how to use isotopes to improve medical imaging and the treatment of

Research done at the FRIB also may have important applications for national security,
metallurgy and other uses. It could lead to better understanding of the origins of stars
and the universe, too.
"This state-of-the-art MSU facility is critical to Michigan and the entire country, and
will create thousands of jobs in our state," U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said in
a statement. "With today's announcement, we are one step closer to seeing this project
become a reality."

and federal officials eventually increased appropriation proposals.
The FRIB project was awarded to MSU by the government in 2008. MSU and the state
of Michigan's congressional delegation waged an intense campaign for the FRIB,
overcoming competition from the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois.
The project brings with it projections of more than $1 billion in economic investment
for the greater Lansing region over 20 years and the creation of 400 permanent jobs
and 5,000 construction jobs. The hiring process is already under way as MSU has
selected about 100 new staff members for the FRIB project.
