Former owners Kindlon Enterprises Inc. decided to sell the company in 2010. The
purchase was a two-year process, with South Haven's economic development liaison
and Rep. Fred Upton and his staff helping facilitate the process, Loope said. Loope
secured financing through Chemical Bank with the approval of the Small Business
Administration, but declined to give the purchase price.

Of his decision to buy South Haven Packaging, Loope said, "The main reason was that
I've always wanted to own my own business, since I was a teenager. It was a goal of
mine from way back when."
There was a second reason, he said: There was no guarantee that an outside buyer
would choose to keep the business in Southwest Michigan.

For South Haven, having Loope purchase the business means that the company will
stay in the city that gave it its name.
"We're very delighted to see that the company is staying here in South Haven under his
management," said Jack McCloughan, economic development liaison for the city,
whom Loope credited with helping bring about the sale. "It's great for the community to
retain the jobs."
South Haven Packaging, which manufactures corrugated packaging primarily for the
automotive and furniture industries, has operated in the city since 1994. At its height in
the mid-2000s, the company employed 41 people. Today, it has 18 employees, and
Loope said he hopes to add another three to five in 2013, as well as make some capital
upgrades to equipment.
While the company, like many, went through a rough patch in 2008 and 2009 during
the Great Recession, Loope said, business is now growing again.

"We're doing fine and are able to grow responsibly. We're not trying to grow too fast. I
see that continuing," said Loope.
As for how it feels to own the company, Loope said that so far, it's been very much

"I gotta tell you, the first couple of days were just the same as they were before. That
was a goal: to make it as seamless as it was before," said Loope, saying that he hoped
that customers and suppliers wouldn't even notice the change. "I didn't want them to
know there was a difference."

I wish I could see the anguish that Fred must have gone thru to allow
the government to help out in the creation of jobs for our area. Who
said that government doesn't create jobs. The SBA is more than happy
to assist when ever they can. Fred will expect a "donation" to his
election fund after all this isn't a free country as far as he is concerned.
