This was done in order to get more information to more members for less cost. Your printed newsletter mailed from PtHA Headquarters on Oct. 1. Technically, every member is entitled to receive the Pinto Horse Quarterly; however, because we know you want to be as eco-friendly as possible, we eliminated all duplicate addresses before mailing so each household receives only one copy. If you decide you would like another copy, just contact the PtHA office and we will send one your way. In addition to the four issues in January, April, July and October, you will be able to access the issues for Pinto of the Year Results in the spring and Color Breed Congress results in the winter through ePinto online. The Pinto World Championship results issue will be printed and mailed to exhibitors and owners that participated at the show as well as available online. We encourage potential advertisers to take advantage of the extremely low 2011 rates for this publication. One full-page ad will only cost you $200 per issue. There is also a Stallion Section that allows up to two pictures plus editorial text for only $50 per issue. Meet: Teresa Visser Interview By Meriruth Cohenour Photographs Provided By Teresa Visser We all end up crossing over and helping out whenever we need to stray from our main gig. A few weeks ago I worked the chutes for over 2000 teams at the Wrangler Roping held in our town! History As a grade schooler, I worked off lessons at a local Arabian farm by mucking stalls, grooming at shows and halter training babies. In high school, my parents let me get off the activity bus at a quarter horse farm to take weekly riding lessons. I had to be in a regular sport to be able to ride that bus so I fought really hard to hold a position on the volleyball team so I could take riding lessons. In the winter, I wasn’t tall enough to make the basketball team so I become involved in theater, speech, and even cheerleading; anything so I could ride that bus! In college, I worked as a junior trainer and was mentored from some great trainers, judges and owners. I kept my ears open and my mouth shut. I was just really lucky to be able to have those opportunities. I hung out in the wee hours and watched schooling sessions. Some friends in the industry noticed I had a good eye and encouraged me to pursue judging. I knew I had done well in beginning horse judging by winning 4-H judging competitions, but going for breed cards was more intimidating. I need not have worried as the same kind of mentors that helped my horsemanship tal- 16 PIN TO HO R S E q u a rt erl y ents grow, are still helping me grow my judging talents today. The judging schools we attend are very well done. Mostly, I just have kept on adding experiences and having the time of my life horsin’ around. Involvement My involvement in Pinto came when my family purchased a stock type pony, Poco’s Wildcat, for my son and I purchased a weanling Pleasure type Pinto gelding, PR Christopher Robin, to show PtHA. My husband and I were drawn, especially at that time in our lives es a large cattle operation in South Dakota and competes in rodeo. My husband is a farrier and serves on the largest rodeo committee in our state. My niece and her husband operate a recreational facility in the heart of Lake Country with boarding, trail riding, training and a large youth program. I show main-ring classes, dabble in Sport-Horse, judge and work my tail off at the roping events. My husband and I were on the first board of directors of the North Dakota Pinto Horse Association. We worked with the sector director for our area, Judy “I decided to step up and serve Schroeder, to start the charnationally as I am of a strong in North opinion that you are either part ter Dakota. The of the problem” North Dakota Paint with a young son, to the family as- Club also helped out by sponsoring pect of Pinto. We sponsor a few shows the horse industry. My son is a be- a year with multiple judges that I ginning rope horse trainer, manag- muscle my husband to be the show manager. We participate in some October 2010 state horse fairs and open shows through the OCAP program. I also still belong to the Minnesota PtHA. I decided to step up and serve nationally (on the PtHA board of directors) as I am of a strong opinion that you are either part of the solution or part of the problem. I was also brought up “not to take my half out of the middle” so serving on the Pinto board of directors has been a natural progression. I have a diverse background in this industry and feel I bring an all-around perspective to the board. It is really important when you serve in a capacity like this to look at the whole picture and try to do what is best for the organization, which is hard sometimes when you have to put your personal agendas on hold. Success I’m not sure I would recommend this method to a saddle to anyone, but here is the story. A year before my pony won the Dale Chavez saddle, my niece, Briana Visser (a horse trainer from Minn.) and I traded a horse for this pony. Our rule is you don’t take one out of the trailer without putting one back in! Pete was pretty green so my son roped him and we kind of herded him into the trailer. Over the next several months I worked hard to desensitize him and introduce him to all sorts of experiences. I hired Abby Duncanson, about five minutes after she became a trainer, to take him to his first show that fall as I was booked for judging jobs. Abby hauled him to our Fargo show for in-hand classes and started driving training. I took him home and kept on working over the winter. This spring, my niece took him for driving training since she has sandy soil and we had 90+ inches of snow to melt off, which makes great mud. I got him back and drove him as much as I could. I even hauled out to Bismarck where my friend, Mimi Stanley, hooked a miniature to a creaky cart to give him some traffic and noise. I had to elicit my husband to help hook several times a week. We tried to give him a ton of experience. Repetitive Motion’s first driving class ever was a Sioux Falls schooling show on the way to the World, and the people there were just so kind. We got down to the World show, and things came together for him that week. He grew up a bunch and turned in some decent performances for such a green pony. He is versatile so we edged out some very good competition. It wasn’t until the very last class that we knew he had won. Even though we ended up with the saddle, we have a lot of work to do. Since that time, he has improved a lot so I’m excited about 2011 and excited about the new incentive program! Visser with husband, John, and son, Austin, on a recent visit to the historic Oklahoma City Stockyards. Repetitive Motion, Visser’s pony, earned a Dale Chavez Saddle for his 2010 PWC success. In the mid 70’s, I joined the Pinto Horse Association and the local charter Tri-State Pinto Horse Association. Throughout the 80’s, I showed many different breeds but always came back to Pinto. In 1996, I went to my first National Championship Show in Tulsa. From 1996 – 2008 I attended the Pinto Nationals and World, every year except for 2001, the year they were remodeling Tulsa arena; 2009, I missed due to my parents, Lyn and Carol Krolczyk, husband Ken and daughter Jamie. I was then scheduled for an Evaluation at the University of Wiscon- the honor of donating one of my kidneys to a very good friend of mine, Jeanne Bleich. Jeanne and I have known each other for about 25 years. Our paths have crossed many times throughout those years. Jeanne will have many more Doctor’s visits, but is doing great. She says that she has never felt better. Praise God for 2 kidneys, when he knew we only needed one! If asked “Would I do it again?” I would say “Definitely!” I am so very happy that I was able to share my life with my very good friend. What a gift God has given both of us. Overall, being a kidney donor has been a very rewarding experience. I have never felt better and I have a deep sense of pride and accomplishment. It has been a great honor and privilege to be able to have made a difference. Not only have I improved Jeanne’s health and life, but the experience has taught me to appreciate my own health and live life to the fullest. This is when I entered the world of pintos and ended up at a new barn SR Performance horses in Holland Michigan, and met Scott Schuitema, my trainer who has known this mare since she was a baby. He showed me her true talents and all those secret little “buttons”. I’m finally learning a whole new style of riding and doing the Pinto circuit- which I really love, especially when we went to Pinto Worlds last year. I would also like to thank Stephanie, my riding/show buddy for putting up with my inexperience to this kind of showing. With 1,076 Performance points, this horse has earned 6 Performance ROMs and 2 Performance ROEs. Q & A from Angela Nemjo: GO BEY BEE GO (Jake) is my first pinto, I bought him in June of 2006. Donna Braschler who sold Jake to me, and Destiny Chisledon who bred him, make it to several of our shows each year to cheer us on and watch us show at Worlds via the web cam! Favorite thing about showing pinto? I love having four days straight with nothing but time with my horse and sharing him with my horse friends! I started riding when I was eight! My first horse was a Shetland pony named pepper that loved to try and knock my head off by taking me under low tree branches! My pinto and I are best known for being the one’s that got ran over by another horse and cart in a 2008 pleasure driving class. We both had several injuries the worst being my ankle with a double fracture that required two surgeries, the last surgery being just 4 months before we left for Worlds this year. Jake ended up with scars on three of his legs and is missing a piece of his lower lip but is fine other than that. It was five long weeks after the accident before we knew if Jake would be able to be ridden again, and we were fairly sure he would never want to go back in the cart. But he never gives up, not only is he back in the cart, he has since won two more World Champion titles in Open Ideal Driving with Trainer Tim Wigren, Jake has a total of nine World Champion titles, and five reserves. Tell us about your Pinto? Jake has enough personality for several horses! He is happiest when he is working, and will beg to come out and work some more even after a seven class day! He has an unusual talent of being able to buck standing still! Jake’s best events are show hack, ideal, and halter. He is a saddleseat horse and loves speed, the hand gallop is his favorite! My favorite class is Show hack, it’s long and exhausting, but I do love a challenge! What motivates me when competing with pinto? I always set personal goals before the show season starts, like what ROM, ROE, or achievement awards I want to finish before the season is over. Keeping an eye on my goal helps me to see the big picture and keeps me training for the season, not just the next show. My favorite food is Chinese, and Jake would do just about anything for peppermints! My favorite place to show is Tulsa! We show so often at the same places in our zone so they feel like home. But something about the huge arena and bright lights at Expo Square tells you “this is the real deal”! Hobbies besides horses: I love anything Disney. I have had a annual pass at Disneyland since 1995, and go at least four times a year, and have been on several Disney cruises. I have plenty of people to give thanks to. My husband Jason who is also my groom and horse chauffeur, trainer Tim Wigren for putting up with me and my obsessiveness for perfection, my horse shoers Otis Curry and Larry Corbett. Jake’s vet Randy Lee and Jake for helping me live my dreams and make lots of new ones too! Q & A: Favorite thing about Pinto horses? Their versatility and the variety of color patterns that make each Pinto unique and beautiful. Favorite thing about showing Pintos? My favorite thing about showing Pintos is the diversity of classes we have, such as Disciplined Rail and Ideal Pinto that show how versatile and talented our Pintos are. Also I like the variety of Pintos. Even though I only show one type of Pinto, I love to see the Minis, Ponies, Saddlebreds, etc. at the shows. When did you start riding? I started riding around the age of ten on riding stable horses and never outgrew it as my mother had hoped. Tell us about your Pinto: I have owned Billy for eight years. I bought him through Karen Qualls at Premier Performance Horses. I never believed I would ever own such a wonderfully talented horse as Billy. He is always willing to do anything I ask of him. He may look a little grumpy with his ears back when trotting in showmanship but he does his job beautifully. What are your and your Pintos favorite events? Billy and I like to do trail and horsemanship. He is very good at pattern classes. What motivates you when competing? I set goals at the beginning of each year. I try to focus my training and competition on achieving those specific goals, rather than going for an all-around award at each show. I am constantly amazed and proud when Billy and I actually achieve each one. Favorite place to show? The World Show is my favorite place to show. I love seeing all my friends from other states that I only get to see once a year. And I love all the variety of things going on during the show and it’s a great facility. Trail and discipline rail What motivates you when competing on your Pinto? Continuous improvement and the challenge of competition. Anyone you would like to give thanks to? First off I’d have to thank God for allowing me the opportunity to associate with one of his creatures although there may have been a time or two I may not have always shown that gratitude. Secondly, I have to thank my husband for (mostly) understanding my huge desire to compete even though it has been a large time and financial commitment. PIN TO HO R S E q u ar terl y October 2010 Advanced Awards Amateur Supreme Champion #105 Word On The Street Q & A: What is your favorite thing about Pinto Horses? Variety, color, multiple abilities What if your favorite thing about showing Pintos? The best thing about Pinto shows is the culture of camaraderie and sportsmanship. In the three years that I’ve been showing Pinto, I’ve gained so many friends -- friends with horses of all types, ponies and minis. Everyone has something to offer and the Pinto organization thrives on the principle of accepting and respecting variety. When did you start riding? I got my first horse on Easter Sunday when I was 9, in 1977. Tell us about your Pinto: Slick, aka Word On The Street is a nine year old gelding by Street Legal. I picked out Slick and bought him when he was a yearling. He got his name because of this thin hair coat. He can be very dramatic and opinionated but he enjoys being doted on, loves peppermint candy, and never turns down a good scratch. What are your Pintos best events? Slick excels at western events. What are your favorite events? I love showmanship and the individual pattern classes, but there is no better feeling than an honest and correct western pleasure ride on a draped rein! What motivates you when competing on your Pinto? Continuing on the journey of cultivating my partnership with my horse. We continue to learn new things and evolve as a team. I’m a perfectionist, so I’m always striving to improve. But I’m motivated most by talented horses and gifted riders who inspire me to think, “I’d like to be that good someday.” What are your hobbies besides horses? Really? There’s something else? Does getting ready to go to a show count as a separate hobby? Between my job and daily horse chores, I enjoy going to the movies and listening to the Grateful Dead. Place you want to visit the most? Churchill Downs on the first weekend in May. What is your ideal job? Ideally, Equine Manager at Medieval Times, but realistically, Marketing Manager for any equine breed association. Why #222? Number 13 would be my first choice, but in Zone One, that number will always belong to Melissa Enfield-Wigen. Out of respect for Melissa and Side Show, I always opt for my next favorite, number 222. It was the number assigned to me at the 1985 AJPHA World Show when I won my first world title, so I consider it very lucky. Anyone you would like to give thanks to? Although I’ve done nearly all of Slick’s training myself, several people have helped us along the way: Teresa Pelton, John Irish, Tara Crawford, Brian Croft, Anthony Wilson and my riding instructor since childhood, Cheryl McGinty. Others have provided support to keep us going, looking and feeling good: Chris Frost, Bill McKechnie, Dr. Tom Everman, Dr. Tom Timmons, Jim Shackelford and Kenny Strohecker. I’m also lucky to have never been without a groom for Ideal. Thanks to Dan, Dale, Nan, Stephanie, Joanna and Sonja among others for carrying my saddle and I can’t overlook how grateful I am to have a job that supports my passion and a supervisor who understands there is life outside of work: Kelly Jones at Premera Blue Cross but without incredible parents Mickey and Bonnie Haynes, I would never have had the skills, motivation or confidence to compete successfully. Q & A: What is your favorite thing about Pinto Horses? My favorite thing about Pinto Horses is their unique color patterns. You rarely ever see two true Pintos that look exactly the same! What is your favorite thing about showing Pintos? I love the variety of classes offered at the Pinto shows. It gives everyone a fair chance to be on top of the competition. When did you start riding? I started riding when I was 9 going on 10 years old. I’m 15 now. How long have you had your Pinto? I have had my Pinto, Zipafied aka LeRoy, that I am currently showing for a little over two years. Tell us about your Pinto: I love LeRoy because he always gives me 110 percent. He’s sweet, dorky, and very silly. I’d almost say he is more of a dog than a horse! His overall personality makes working with him that much easier. I don’t think he has one mean bone in his body. He is so fun to ride because he is a true all-around horse. With his size [standing at a proud 16.3] he can go English but never ceases to amaze people by sucking back and going western. We actually won both the English ideal and western ideal at the 2009 World Show. We are still working on our barrel racing skills. It is sort of a hit and miss thing at this moment in time. He puts up with a lot and I love him for that. Without him I don’t know where I’d be. What are your Pintos best events? Both the ideal classes. He is a super-cute mover and has 50/50 coloring. He also halters very well. What are your favorite events? My favorite events are the speed events which are just for fun and the pattern classes. I absolutely LOVE showmanship! What motivates you when competing on your Pinto? At the beginning of each new year and show season I set my goals. My goals motivate me because I won’t stop (or make new goals) until they are achieved. Favorite Food?: Ahh... food. I love all food. I love steak and potatoes (especially from Outback) but I also love Greek and Italian food. It’s a tough choice if I had to narrow it down to only one. Favorite place to show? MSU in East Lansing, Mich. at the Fall Color Classic or at the Tulsa Expo Center. I love to visit my friends from down south! What are your hobbies besides horses? I love to read and listen to music. Because I am so involved with horses I don’t have any time to participate in a school sport. However, I would love to learn how to play the piano. Place you want to visit the most? Italy or Greece. What do you do to pass the time at shows or events when not in the ring? I am showing two horses this year, so I don’t have much time to mess around. I get off one horse and onto the other. I am showing Sky High on Scotch in the amateur classes and Vanna in the open classes. Anyone you would like to give thanks to? I have really enjoyed working with Peter Frost of Frost Training this year. Having his help has been invaluable in getting both horses in the pen on time and showing well. I have also taken some very nice young ladies with me to help as well, Marina Olson and Mikaela Beier, both are 13 years old and very helpful. PtHA Open Champion # 2893 Pacific Picasso Prints Champions Q &A Charlinda Schabinger: What is your favorite thing about Pinto Horses? I enjoy the variety of horses that compete as Pintos. What is your favorite thing about showing Pintos? I like the point system, the variety of different classes offered such as disciplined rail and ideal pinto, hunter under saddle and show hack. When did you start riding? I fell in love with riding at a girls camp in Michigan, we were able to ride three times a week only, just what I needed to get me hooked for life! How long have you had your Pinto? I have been raising Pintos since 1990. I raised This Stars from Heaven, aka Vanna she is four this year. Her dam is Shesa Starry Sky a Pinto Supreme Champion that I also raised and her sire is Zips Heaven Sent. What are your Pintos best events? Her easy going nature makes trail a good event for her, she is curious but fearless. She does well in both English and western pleasure. We have not started on the equitation, horsemanship or showmanship classes yet because I am showing Sky High on Scotch in the amateur events. 2007 Miniature Stallion Sire: Magic Mans Color Prints (AMHA) Dam: Las Doradas Tiffanys Lace (AMHA) Owner: Joni L. He had no training so we started with halter and in hand, as a 3 yr. old this year we are showing for high points and have added some amateur classes. He has been high point mini A at all but one show. He will show again next year then retire to stud. My favorite part of pinto is the friends we have met. The competitors in the miniature and pony group are tough competition but we also have made great friends and we all help each other out. My horses best events are in hand trail obstacle driving showmanship and discipline rail. I love the little details of training and start all of my foals showing in hand very young, it makes training to drive much easier, My goal is to raise a great all around horse. I would like to thank the Anderson family from OpTHA . Cecilia (granny) has been showing since the beginning of pinto for the Anderson’s shows Are a family affair, they set up the in hand jumping and obstacle classes. As most of you know, the Pinto Horse Association sends out an email newsletter each month to all members who provide their e-mail address. As this service continues to grow and become more popular among our members, we would like to remind all of our Charter clubs that the e-mail news service is available for your use as well. The e-mail news service is a great way to promote an upcoming show or event that your Charter is hosting, along with any breaking news your Charter wants to provide to its members. PtHA can narrow down the number of e-mails sent by designating members from each Zone; this makes it cheaper and easier for Charters to promote their shows to a more specified target audience. PtHA Charters have the option of sending in their pre-made show bill or advertisement to PtHA or they can send in the show information and an ad for the show will be created, free of charge. 62 PIN TO HO R S E q u ar t e rl y October 2010 PtHA uses the Constant Contact email service. Using Constant Contact allows PtHA to collect important data from the e-mails sent to make sure they are reaching a broad audience. The service provides PtHA with important data such as how many people have opened the e-mail we sent, what links they clicked on in the email and how many times the e-mail has been viewed. These reports will be available to Charter reps as well. Something new PtHA is adding to the e-mail updates are social media buttons such as Facebook and Twitter. Adding buttons to the e-mails give recipients the chance to like or re-post the link to the e-mail on their social media website of choice. This also serves as a valuable marketing tool to get the word out about an upcoming event. To learn more about our e-mail news service or to download an email advertising contract go to www. pinto.org. Did you know you can track your interim Pinto of the Year standings by visiting www.pinto.org/poy? Clicking on the division listed on the left hand side of the screen will show you the standings for each class, zone, challenge 20 and overall high point!
