Go to the Auckland Libraries website (http://www.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz) Click on Digital Library (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary) Search for the eResource Knowledge Basket – New Zealand Index (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary/resourcepages/knowledgebasketnewzealandindex.aspx) At All Collections, click Off, then tick NZ Herald Classified Personals Scroll down and enter the last name you want to search for in the first Search box, and enter the first name in the second Search box. It is important to use all lower case letters when typing the names to ensure that all relevant results are included. When you click Search, you’ll get a hit list of all the classifieds that include the terms you have used. To see the full text of the notice, click the name listed in blue in the Title column. You can also use Advanced Query (you’ll find this under the Search drop-down menu, top right corner of the home page) to do a more specific keyword search. In the example below, we have searched for death notices for 24 to 27 July 2012 in Taranaki. Tip 5: Go local! – North and Westward: tracking down copies of newspaper articles found on Local History Online The Auckland Libraries’ heritage website Local History Online (http://www.localhistoryonline.org.nz) includes an index to community newspapers from the North Shore, West Auckland and Rodney regions published over the last 5-15 years (depending on the newspaper). You can access this through the Digital Library on our homepage. We can help you to get in touch with the newspaper publisher to get copyright permission if you are planning to reproduce the article in a commercial publication or on a website. Tip 6: Try Papers Past for your family history The National Library website Papers Past (http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz) is a fabulous place to dig around for information about people living between the 1840s and 1940s, and there are a growing number of Auckland regional newspapers, including the New Zealand Herald up to 1884, on the site. You can search by date, region or newspaper title. Papers Past can be accessed through our Digital Library on our homepage. Go to the Auckland Libraries website (http://www.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz) Click on Digital Library (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary) Search for the eResource Papers Past (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary/resourcepages/paperspast.aspx) It’s a full text website, and when it brings up the article it highlights the search terms you have used. This can be particularly useful if the information is buried in a long, chatty article. Rather than using the basic search on the homepage, here are a few tips on using the more search options feature that allow you to specify the settings under the optional filters. This means you will get more relevant search results. Two easy changes to make are: Increase the number of results per page from the default of 10 to 100 Tick the box show preview images; this allows you to visually preview some of the content for each result To be even more specific, make these two additional changes: Set a date range to search, for example January 01, 1900 to December 31, 1910 Choose one or more newspapers to search by using the Ctrl key, hold it down while you highlight a title from the list rather than search every newspaper in the eResource. Tip 7: Find a photo from your place back in 1964 or 1988 The Footprints eResource in our Digital Library includes a selection of more than 1,200 of the most striking photographs from the South Auckland Courier, Manukau Courier, Counties Courier, Eastern Courier and related titles for many of the years between 1963 and 2002. Go to the Auckland Libraries website (http://www.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz) Click on Digital Library (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary) Search for the eResource Footprints (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary/resourcepages/footprints.aspx) Murray Freer, ‘Examination feelings’, Otahuhu College, 1964 (Footprints 00073) Rap group the Semi-MCs, Manurewa, 1988 (Footprints 00649) The Courier photographs are copyright to Fairfax Media, but can be freely downloaded for use in private study and research (eg. for use in your school or university research project). Tip 8: Tips for searching Index Auckland Index Auckland is primarily an index to newspaper articles taken from suburban papers that focus on the local community, its people, and places up to the present day. Go to the Auckland Libraries website (http://www.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz) Click on Digital Library (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary) Search for the eResource Index Auckland (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary/resourcepages/indexauckland.aspx) A simple way to search is to type a keyword, phrase or name in the Quick Keyword Search If you want to do a more specific search, fill in one or more of the fields for the Advanced Search option This search results in seventeen references to Jacob’s Ladder, the staircase from St Marys Bay to Fanshawe Street, including an early sketch from 1852 and references to the new staircase opening in 2011. Tip 9: How to search through very old newspapers (nineteenth century and earlier) in record time – from home Go to the Auckland Libraries website (http://www.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz) Click on Digital Library (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary) On the right-hand menu, under Hot Topics, click on News and newspapers (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary/topicpages/newsandnewspapers.aspx) Look for British Newspapers, 1600-1900 (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary/resourcepages/ British-Library-Newspapers-1600-1900.aspx) This takes you through 3 million pages of historic newspapers and highlights your search terms – in a matter of seconds! Try this search for some local flavour: Quails and Auckland There are 288 articles mentioning quails and Auckland. Use Next to go to Article 43: Gale Document Number: R3214757408 Tip 10: Detective work using eResources: Use early newspapers to find photographs in magazines or serials Early newspapers did not include images, and when drawings and later photographs did start to appear, the quality is not good for reproduction. Newspapers can be useful for tracking down photographs in other publications such as magazines or serials at around the same date. The Auckland Weekly News (AWN) covered a wide range of topics, ‘A journal of commerce, agriculture, politics, literature and art’ from 1863 to 1971. From 1898 a photograph supplement was included each week. Auckland Libraries has an ongoing project to digitise the AWN supplements. The images are added to Heritage Images. Finding historical photographs in the Auckland Weekly News – a two step strategy Sometimes a newspaper report of an event can help you find an illustration in another publication. For example, try this search: Go to the Auckland Libraries website (http://www.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz) Click on Digital Library (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary) Search for the eResource Papers Past (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary/resourcepages/ paperspast.aspx) Type Logan Campbell Boer Star Hotel in the Search box. The first article, entitled The Boer War, dated 13 May 1901, refers to Mayor John Logan Campbell hosting a luncheon for troops returning from the Boer War. This article appeared in the Auckland Star. Go back to the Digital Library (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary) Search for the eResource Heritage Images (http://www.aucklandcitylibraries.com/DigitalLibrary/resourcepages/heritageimagesonline.aspx) Choose Advanced Search, type Auckland Weekly News under Photographer/Publisher Type Logan Campbell under Subject, and type 1901 under Year Then click on the orange Advanced Search button This photograph shows the luncheon at the Star Hotel referred to in the Auckland Star article.
