MARIE BENITEZ HAMMOND, IN (FORMERLY OF EAST CHICAGO) Marie Benitez, age 69, of Hammond, formerly of East Chicago, passed away Sunday June 29, 2014. Marie is survived by her loving husband of 44 years Servando; sons Raul Benitez and Arturo Benitez; grandchildren: Brittney Kowalski, Miguel Benitez, Savannah Benitez and Audrina Benitez; great grandson Bentley; brothers Paul (Mary Lou) Prieto and Lupe (Juanita) Prieto; many nieces, nephews and cousins. We could venture out and try anything because Mom and Dad were always behind us,” she said. “When things did not go well, we could turn back to them for the love and support that was always there.” Robert Turman, 87, of Crown Point, died June 4. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maureen Turman, as well as six children, 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. During World War II, he served in the Army’s Finance Corps under Gen. Douglas McArthur. While in the Philippines, he became disabled when his vehicle drove over a land mine. He suffered significant hearing loss. Turman attended the Missouri School of Mines on the GI Bill, and graduated with a degree in VIRGINIA MARY BOEHLKE WANATAH, IN Virginia Mary Boehlke, 92, of Wanatah passed away Saturday, June 28, 2014. She was born November 9, 1921 in Otis, IN to Frank & Stella (Kuharski) Tesmer and attended Morgan Township School. Virginia was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the ladies of Sacred Heart, charter member of Cardettes Club and the Bunco Club in Wanatah, enjoyed crafting and showcasing her talents at the Scarecrow Festival and other craft shows in the area. She loved her family and playing euchre with them. We will all miss her dominant personality! On October 29, 1938 she married Cornelius "Neil" Boehlke who preceded her in death in 1997. Survivors include their children: Charles (Linda) Boehlke of Indianapolis, David (Bobbie) Boehlke of Monticello, IN, Rosemary (Frank) Wheeler of Wanatah, James (Amy) Boehlke of Kouts, Angela (Lee) Cox of Rockaway Beach, MO, sister-in-law, Hazel Tesmer of Valparaiso, 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mindy Boehlke, three brothers and one sister. He was never happier than when he was building something for one of us or had us gathered at the house for our frequent and large family parties,” she said. “Our dad was an engineer, a builder, a manager, a solid Catholic, a husband, a father and a papa.
