DOROTHY E. O'MALLEY
(NEE OLSON)
MERRILLVILLE, IN
CHARLINE "WILLIE"
RICHARDSON
LAKE STATION, IN
Dorothy E. O'Malley (nee
Olson), age 87, of Merrillville,
Indiana, passed away peacefully
on Sunday, July 6, 2014. Dorothy was born to Lester and Elizabeth (Montag-Wolfe) Olson on
February 16, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from
Bowen High School and worked
for several businesses in The
Loop before meeting Charles J.
"Chuck" O'Malley on a blind
date. They were married on December 28, 1951 during a Chicago Blizzard, and settled in
Dolton, Illinois, where they
raised three children, attended
St. Jude Catholic Church and
formed life-long friendships.
Dorothy worked at the Dolton
Library for 13 years and volunteered at the Ingalls Hospital
Gift Shop in Harvey, Illinois for
15 years. Dorothy and Chuck
took their first trip to Ireland in
1972 and enjoyed subsequent
trips to Great Britain, Spain,
Scandinavia, and Hawaii, and
many road trips in the US, including touring her fill of Civil
War Battlefields. She instilled a
love of handicrafts in her
daughters and enjoyed listening
to Tommy Dorsey and the Irish
Rovers. She spent a lifetime
perfecting the fudge recipe she
learned as a teen and made a
mean pot roast "Just like Uncle
Glen used to make". Dorothy
shared many colorful stories of
her childhood in Chicago during
the 1930's and was interviewed
by Merrillville High School students about life during The
Great Depression. She was the
family genealogist and always
knew who was who in old photos of the Olson-Wolfe and
O'Malley families.
Dorothy is survived by her
daughter, Maureen of Merrillville, IN; son, Kevin of Michigan City, IN; daughter, Kathleen
and son-in-law, Doug of Seattle, WA; grandsons: Alec and
Ian Guthrie of Seattle, WA;
cousins and nephews and their
families who are far afield.
Dorothy was preceded in death
by her beloved Chuck, who
passed in 1988; stillborn granddaughter, Lauren Kathleen
Seljan; and many dear cousins
and in-laws in the Chicago area.
A Memorial Service will be held
on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at St.
Anthony Home Chapel, 203 W.
Franciscan Drive, Crown Point,
IN 46307 at 10:30 AM with Fr.
Myron Lowisz officiating.
The O'Malley family would like
to thank Dorothy's friends and
their families for a lifetime of
sharing and support, and the
fine caregivers at St. Anthony
Home which was Dorothy's
home since 2011. Dorothy's final
years were spent traveling backwards through her life aided by
advancing dementia. Recently
she had made it back to her high
school years and asked her
daughter Maureen if she was on
the right corner to catch the
streetcar…….last Sunday she
was.
