ELIZABETH FINN CARE
New or worn jewellery required for charity stall
Do you have any costume jewellery that you can spare,
or don’t wear anymore? If so, I would be really
grateful for your donation. Most of us have a few
items that never get worn – perhaps a pair of earrings,
or a bracelet – anything would be so welcome.
We are introducing a vintage jewellery stall at our
Autumn fund raising Christmas fair and lunch, to be
held at Childerley Hall Barn on Thursday 10th
October. This is an invitation only event (Christmas
stalls, vintage/nearly new clothes and a most delicious
buffet lunch). If you would like to receive an
invitation, or be put on our mailing list for future
events, please let me know, it is a really great day out.
The event is being organised by the Cambridgeshire
committee for Elizabeth Finn Care and Turn2us, a fast
growing, all-encompassing charity that spends what is
raised in Cambridgeshire, on Cambridgeshire
residents. (see below)
Please call Louise Beamish on 07885 709665 or 01638
507133 and she will come and help you sort
out/collect!
Many thanks
Louise Beamish
******
Elizabeth Finn Care is a national charity that gives
direct financial support to individuals in need. We do
this by providing grants to those meeting our grantgiving criteria, and can assist with the purchase of
household and disability items, house repairs,
transport costs and ongoing living expenses. In
addition Elizabeth Finn Care provides information on
welfare benefits, tax credits and charitable grants
through its Turn2us website and helpline services.
The money that we raise at our event will go towards
the work of Elizabeth Finn Care’s work in
Cambridgeshire. We currently help over 40 people in
the County, and gave more than £47,000 in grants in
the past year.

CARLTON VILLAGE SURVEY
Carlton Parish Council would like to thank all those who
responded to their Parish Survey. The result of the
survey records a collective view of what really matters
to parishioners about the place we live in. The Parish
Council can now attempt to set about some realistic
actions to address issues raised. A full report will be
published soon on the Carlton Village website but in
the interim work has already started on the three
most important issues raised
1. The extremely slow Broadband speed,
2. Danger from speeding traffic through Carlton
Green, Carlton and Willingham Green,
3. Next step in expanding the use of Carlton Church
to include more community activities.

CAMBRIDGESHIRE FIRE & RESCUE SERVICE
WINTER is coming, and Cambridgeshire Fire and
Rescue Service is encouraging all residents to sweep
their chimneys before the cold sets in.
Our top tips to enjoy an open fire safely:
·
Have the chimney swept at least once a year, or
more frequently if you burn wood.
·
Do not bank fires too high and remember to let
them burn down well before you retire to bed.
·
Check the hearth, floor and furnishings near the
fire for hot sparks or embers before you go to bed.
·
Use a fire or spark guard to prevent accidental
fires and make sure that it has the kite mark or
conforms to a relevant British/European safety
standard.
·
Do not place objects on or over the mantelpiece
which may cause you to stand too close to the fire to
reach or use them.
·
Inspect your chimney breast regularly –
particularly in the roof space – to ensure that it is
sound and that sparks or fumes cannot escape through
cracks or broken bricks
·
Avoid burning resinous woods as soot builds up
quickly
·
Buy only suitable fuels.
·
Do not overload the grate or appliance.
Above all, ensure you have a working smoke alarm
fitted on each floor or your home. This will give you
give you an early warning to a fire, allowing extra time
for occupants in the home to escape.
To find out if you are eligible for a free home fire
safety check, call 0800 917 99 94.

DERBYSHIRE POST- from Linton Village College
So the new term is upon us and once more the College
has excellent results to celebrate: 95% A* - C (which
is a new record) with a third of those grades at A /A*.
The class of 2013 had worked hard and performed well
in almost every subject and the community should be
proud of them – particularly because, in partnership
with their parents, our local schools have turned out
another batch of charming, intelligent and highly
employable young people. Our only disappointment this
year was the English results: we have been hit by
national grade boundary changes for 2 years in a row
and this year, the slightly higher number of children
sitting on the C / D borderline in English were
affected by the change in the way that other local
schools were hit last year - only 69% achieved A* - C
including English, which compares with the 70 – 80%
we have enjoyed in previous years. It continues to be
frustrating that grade boundaries are being used to
rationalise national ‘standards’, but at the expense of
year groups of children whose results would have
qualified for higher grades in previous years. In
contrast our science, humanities and arts results were
spectacularly good with very many subjects achieving
the 100% A* - C pass rate.
On a separate note, let me introduce our new
Community Business Manager to you. Here he is in his
own words.
Caroline Derbyshire
Principal
~~~~~~~~~~
My name is Matt Bailey; I am the new Community
Business Manager at Linton Village College.
As Community Business Manager my remit is a broad
one that includes the management and coordination of
the adult education programme, extended schools
programme and management of the community sports
centre.
Linton Village College is the hub of the community and
as such aims to provide exciting and affordable
activities to further knowledge, skills and wellbeing.
My aim is to build upon what the college currently
offers by introducing more choice, more value and
more for you.
However I would like to know what you think and
encourage you to feed back what you would like to see
offered in the way of adult education, after school
activities and fitness classes. I would also like to hear
of any issues, suggestions or ideas you may have
regarding the delivery of the provisions we offer.
All comments will be both gratefully received and
seriously considered. Please feel free to encourage
your friends and relatives to do the same – I want to
hear what you, our community, have to say.
Over the coming weeks I will be organising a user
meeting where the community will be invited to come
along to LVC in order to discuss ideas and suggestions.
In the meantime I would encourage you to either email
me at [email protected] or write to Matt Bailey,
Linton Village College, Cambridge Road, Linton,
Cambridge CB21 4JB.
I look forward to working more closely with you over
the coming months.
EAST CAMBRIDGESHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL
Recycling - What needs to go into our black refuse
sacks?
Our old and new calendars state that the black refuse
sacks are "for small items produced on a daily basis
that cannot be recycled through existing services".
Plastic wrappings, hygiene waste, nappies and
expanded polystyrene are examples. Anything that can
go in the new bins should not be put in the black sacks.
The bins and calendars have a fairly exhaustive list of
what should and should not be put in them. For further
details on what should and should not be put in the
black sacks, see "What will we collect?"
on the Council’s website. Many items that may not be
put in the black sacks may be saved and taken to the
Cambridgeshire Household Waste Recycling Centres.
These take electrical items, batteries, wood, DIY
waste, sheet glass, metal, cooking and vehicle oil, large
rigid plastic items, paint or empty tins and excess
garden waste etc. Charity shops take clothes, toys,
books, electrical items etc. Some supermarkets take
plastic bags, water filter cartridges, batteries,
fluorescent light bulbs and tubes.
Assisted Waste Collections
If you are infirm, disabled or have a serious long-term
illness, and there is no-one else at home to help you
take your waste to the boundary of your property, the
Council will provide a free Assisted Service, as before.
Please call the Council to obtain a certification form.
There is also one that may be printed from its website.
drop them in the box on the gate at White Hart
ELLESMERE GARDEN CLUB
It was a delight to welcome so many members new and
old to hear one of our favourite speakers, Peter
Jackson, last month. We hope to be able to twist his
arm to return again in the near future – so do let the
committee know what topic you’d like covered so that
we can book early!
Our meeting this month is a hands-on session Wednesday 9 October “Bangers, Booze and Bulbs”.
Come along to the Ellesmere Centre at 8pm with your
container for planting up. You can buy compost and
bulbs on the night, and let your imagination run riot
with ideas for unusual schemes if you want to. The
evening is bound to be a lot of fun, and as you might
imagine, will include refreshments!
For the following meeting we will welcome Sue
Robinson who will talk on “Gertrude Jekyll and Edwin
Lutyens” – Wednesday 13 November at 8pm in the
Ellesmere Centre as usual.
As always, we have refreshments and a raffle at our
meetings and you can get further information about
the club and its activities from Sandie on 507542.
THE BULL, BURROUGH GREEN
To All Dog Owners
It has been noticed that the amount of dog mess
found around the front and especially the back garden
of the pub has increased dramatically. Can you have
some consideration and make sure when walking
through the pub gardens you keep your dog/dogs on a
lead at all times, and clear up any mess left? If the
mess continues we will have no alternative but to stop
access to the rear by fencing it off, leaving only the
public footpath as access. Thank You.
Phone Box Restoration Fund
Thanks to the generosity of local residents and
passers-by, The Bull has now raised £175.00 towards
the
restoration
of
the
phone
box. Our target is £250.00 so please
keep it coming!
COUNCIL NEWS
Telephone Box update
We are very pleased to say that we are about to start
the sandblasting process to remove all the old paint
from our sad looking phone box. During the works, we
will also have to remove the old door in order to
replace the burnt frame. Once cleaned, it will be
repainted and reglazed, as long as the weather is kind
and stays dry. This work is partially covered by the
insurance payout, but as we are using specialist phone
box replacement glazing parts, it is a costly job. Thank
you to The Bull, who are leading the fundraising, and
to those who have donated so far, but we still have a
way to go and welcome further donations please, as we
seek to return the phone box to its former glory as a
working village library.
Playground update
Exciting news for all the children!
After much consultation, the site for the playground
has been chosen and leased. It will be on the triangle
of the Green at the entrance to Elizabeth Way.
Before we start building the playground, there will be
necessary work carried out on the Elm tree to remove
any dead branches, and the hedge bordering the
playgroup garden will be removed, as required by the
Tree Preservation Officer. We expect work on the
build to start mid November, once the tree and hedge
work has been completed, and the enclosure fence to
be commenced at the beginning of December, once the
playground equipment has been installed. We shall
update you all again when we have an expected opening
date!
Thank you to all involved for their hard work in making
these two projects become a reality. Those wishing to
donate money or help with the phone box painting,
please contact Jo Batting 01638 507779
MOVEMBER AND PROSTATE CANCER.
Just
one
month
to
go
before
our
Movember competition starts and I can now reveal a
few more details about the proceedings. We will start
the month's efforts on Thursday 31st October at the
Bull in Burrough Green from 7.30pm. Candidates will
be required to register and David, the landlord, has
offered to take a full frontal photograph as a
reference
point
at
the
start
of
the
competition. Sponsorship Forms will also be available
from mid-October if you are unable to make the 31st
but we will require a self-portrait taken on the day.
(It is, however, Halloween and so I hope that you may
be able to make time to include a visit to the pub in
your celebrations to ward off Witches and Wizards!)
Judging will take place on Friday the 29th November
either at the Bull or, if numbers require, we will move
across to the Reading Room in the village. We have
started to interview and recruit additional judges to
join Richard Goss's team. However, their identities
will be protected until the event to protect them from
any unwanted attention that may try to direct their
direction of voting!!
We have been very lucky and honoured to secure the
free services of one of our leading Rock Bands to play
at the judging. "Grey Matter" a local group, has been
able to obtain permission to be released by their
manager and recording studio to play for us on the
night.
And finally, it is appreciated that many of
the contestants may not have grown a
moustache before. Therefore, they will be
able to decide on the category that they wish to enter
when they see how their hirsute upper lip
develops. It has been suggested that an
additional category may be for the best
historical look-alike: ie. Hitler, Poirot or
Stalin. Also, if there are any doubts as to
what constitutes a moustache I will give guidelines in
the November newsletter.
As before, if you have any question please telephone
Brian Sandford on 01638 507488
~~~~~
GROW A MOUSTACHE FOR CHARITY!
Movember the Charity and Prostate Cancer
Prostate Cancer is the most common form of non-skin
cancer in men. About 40,000 men in the UK, generally
over 50, will be affected each year, which relates to 1
in 6 being affected during their lifetime. Movember is
one of the charities that raise money for Prostate
Cancer Research and challenges men to grow a
moustache during the 30 days of November, thereby
changing their appearance and the face of men’s
health. By doing so they become Mo Bros and if they
receive help from a partner, the partner also becomes
a Mo Sista or Mo Bro. (Yes, the spelling is correct!)

GREAT NORTH RUN
We completed the run along with 41000 other runners
on a cold and wet Sunday. It was one of the wettest in
its 31 year history. Iain and Daniel ran 1 hour 51 and I
(Jim) ran 1.54. We have raised just
short of £1,900 so far. All of the
money raised will go to the
Opportunity Group at the Ellesmere
Centre. For those that don't know,
it’s a club that has been running for
21 years for disabled children. They
meet weekly on a Wednesday afternoon. The money
raised will go towards helping the children participate
in sport. We would like to say a big thank you to
everyone who has sponsored us and helped to raise a
significant amount. It would be fantastic if we could
reach £2000 and it’s not too late to help. The website
will be closing soon
alternatively see us in person.
Thank you

WESTLEY WATERLESS CHURCH
06 October: Harvest Family Service at 4pm & 5pm
That’s 4pm onwards to decorate the windows and 5pm
for the service! Children and families are invited to
create harvest theme decorations for the windows for
a competition to be judged at the end of the
service. Think displays of autumn flowers, ‘stained
glass’ collages, homemade bread in creative designs,
etc. – anything on an autumnal theme.
Harvest
Festival food donations are also requested which will
be given to Jimmy’s Night Shelter in Cambridge as
usual. Donations can be brought and left at the church
any time over the weekend, even if you are not
attending the service.
10 November: Remembrance Service at 10.50am
Westley has the honour of hosting the remembrance
service this year and being first in the remembrance
roll call. Please do come and show your support.

BURROUGH GREEN CRICKET CLUB
SEASON 2013
After a significantly better season in
terms of weather we were able to play
nearly all our matches.
The first team saw a number of players
leave last year but we were able to
welcome back several returning members and also add
a number of new players.
This enabled us to greatly bolster both teams and we
completed an entire season without missing a match
even if at times we needed the support of our wives.
(Thank you Emma Stephens!)
The first team finished just below mid table in their
league and the second team who having once been in
second position finished in mid table.
The club today has many supporters who prepare the
wicket, arrange friendlies, organise the teams and
fixtures and perhaps most importantly ensure that
there are delicious teas to whom we are all most
grateful. I would like to record a vote of thanks to
Luke Williamson for his efforts throughout the year
in getting two teams out on a regular basis and
arranging the many friendlies which were enjoyed by
all.
We have arranged a tidy up day for the Pavilion on
Saturday 12th October from 10 - 1pm and are also
arranging to have the wicket professionally prepared
for winter to ensure an excellent playing surface for
2014.
We are arranging indoor nets for the start of the
season in March but more about that next year.
Thank you to all who supported the club and see you all
next year.

that we would be updated in September this year
about the timescale for our area.

BRINKLEY
We welcome several new residents to
Brinkley. Some of you may be dog
owners and we hope you have noticed
how free our paths and verges are
from dog mess. However, there has been a noticeable
increase in dog mess along the High Street between
Hall Lane and Old School Lane recently and wondered
if someone wasn’t aware that it is an offence not to
clear up after your dog. There are plenty of Dog Bins
in the village to use.
Please help to keep Brinkley clean.
Thank you.

++++++++++++
Dear All,
In the life of a vicar the time from late August until
Christmas is a busy one filled with lots of
remembering. We remember and give thanks to God
for all the good things we enjoy at harvest time, we
remember those with whom we have shared love at All
Souls and those who gave and continue to give their
lives in service of their country on Remembrance
Sunday. In a few weeks’ time it will be my very
favourite season of the Church’s year: Advent, when
we look back to the great prophets who spoke of a
future that for most of them was centuries in its
fulfilment. And of course at Christmas we look back to
that moment more than 2000 years ago when God
chose to be born as a vulnerable baby to share at the
deepest level the vulnerability of what it means to be
human. Not forgetting, that every single Sunday we
remember and give thanks for God’s self - giving when
we celebrate Holy Communion.
Some might ask what the point is in looking back, in
remembering events that we cannot change: Footfalls
echo in the memory /Down the passage which we did
not take/Towards the door we never opened.
(T.S.Elliot) But actually, it’s often when we take the
time to remember and reflect that we discern
patterns and meaning that in the maelstrom of day-today life, elude us. I came across a lovely description of
This image of the flutter of the numinous is an
extraordinary one; like coming upon the delicate
beauty of a butterfly. Sometimes we glimpse
something of God and recognise it instantly, but often
it is only when we allow ourselves the time and space
to reflect and remember, that those glimpses are able
to seep into our souls to colour and ultimately
transform our view of the world.
To be honest, I think the Church, in its widest sense,
has often been guilty of trying dictate how people
experience the presence of God in their lives and
sadly, very many people think that they have to be a
certain type of person to connect with God in any
meaningful way. But every single human being walking
on this earth is made in the image of God and as such
holds within themselves a spark of divine life. Every
single human being is loved by God who comes to them
in a myriad of different ways. For me God speaks most
powerfully through the beauty of the natural world,
through the love I share with my family and through
my imagination in the form of poetry and art. All of us
will experience God in vastly different ways; those
ways may or may not be validated by the Church, and
it doesn’t matter, God is God, and way beyond anything
we can imagine or pin down.
So as we approach these weeks of remembering, I
hope you can find some space to look back and wonder
at the mystery of it all, and I pray that you too might
recognise the flutter of the numinous in the story of
your life.
Love and prayers
Pauline
