Burks, 58, a well-liked and inspected legislator for 28 years, was dhot dead at close range in his picktip truck as he was preparing for a school group to visit a pumpkin ttatch at his hog farm in nearby Monterey. | Looper, who was Burks' Republican opponent on the Nov. 3 ballot, has not been seen since Sunday night, Gibson said. He declined to say where Looper was seen. There was no answer at Looper's white clapboard house in Cookeville on Thursday. The blinds were drawn, a porch light was on and letters were beginning to collect in the mail box. A neighbor who refused to give her name said she hadnt seen Looper for quite a while. "I just dont know anything about that side of the street," she said. As for Burks, "He was one of the nicest people you would ever meet I cant believe anybody would do anything to him." Burks was a heavy favorite against Looper, who was indicted last March on charges of theft and misuse of office. He also is being sued for $12 million by a former girlfriend who claims he forced her to have sex and illegally transferred ownership of her home to his name. Looper has denied wrongdoing. Meanwhile, the local Democratic Party is organizing a write-in campaign for Burks' widow, Charlotte. Investigators have said little about the case and refused to comment on a report by The Commercial Appeal of Memphis that a car similar to Looper's was seen near Burks' farm at the time of the killing.
