F
or a long time, Connie
Whitcomb dreamed of opening a boutique.
The idea started in wistful
discussions with her mom
while the two tended tables filled
with embellished garments and floral arrangements at craft shows.
As a hobby, Whitcomb added
designs to clothing items, and
Maxine Wilkins, a long-time florist,
made silk arrangements. The
women started selling their designs
at craft fairs and local events in
2007 as a way to spend time together. The shows were fruitful in both
sales and memories made. And they
gave way to a new idea for
Whitcomb.
“I always said, ‘Wouldn’t that be
fun to have a shop?’ ” Whitcomb
said.
She started thinking seriously
about opening a shop post-retirement a few years ago, and then she
happened to see a downtown
Hastings location open up last year.
Whitcomb isn’t yet retired and
won’t be for several more years, so
the timing wasn’t perfect, but the
location and opportunity was. She
launched M&M Designs at 219 N.
Lincoln Ave. in September 2011.
Whitcomb is currently employed
as a grain accountant at Cooperative
Producers Inc. She’s been there 34
years, so opening a retail shop is a
completely new endeavor.
“It’s so opposite of what I do,” she
said. “I’m learning every day and I
have so much to learn.”
On top of her full-time job, she
said she spends an additional 20-25
hours a week at the shop.
“The hardest part is not letting
either my job or the shop suffer,”
she said. “The juggling has been dif-
ficult but rewarding.”
She also spends hours looking for
those one-of-a-kind items that fill
the boutique.
“If I’m not here in the shop, I’m
at home, looking on the computer,”
she said. “I try to find something
really different and unique —
things that have that ‘wow’ factor.”
Whitcomb knew opening a shop
while she was still at CPI would
mean she would need help. That’s
where family and friends stepped in
and made Whitcomb’s dream possible.
“One of the deals was that I knew I
was going to have to hire out,” she said.

siding company owned by
two women isn’t par for the
course in the construction
business, but that’s exactly
where a pair of Hastings sisters have found themselves.
Jean Murphy and Karen Kempf
started working for Lemonds Siding &
Window Co. when it was owned and
operated by their brother, Doug
Lemonds. Lemonds started the company in 1979.
Murphy worked in the bookkeeping
end of the business beginning in
1984, while Kempf lent her talents in
sales starting in 1987.
When Lemonds decided it was time
to sell the company, Murphy and
Kempf thought they would go their
separate ways and find new jobs.
“We figured we’d probably have to
move on,” Kempf said.
But after some discussions and
thought, the sisters decided to take
ownership of the company themselves. That happened in 1998.
“At that point we’d been doing
what we were doing for a long time,
and we liked the business,” Kempf
said. “It felt natural to move into the
ownership part of it.”
Today, besides owning the company,
Kempf is the sales manager and Murphy
is the business manager. They also hired
an operations manager, as well as about
10 other employees, plus crews.
Both said it is unusual for a construction company such as theirs to
be owned by women and that com-

Sisters Jean Murphy (left) and Karen Kempf own and operate Lemonds Siding.
petitors have tried to use it to their
advantage. But that tactic generally
has not worked, and being a womanowned company has actually worked
in Lemonds’ favor.
“We do run into comments from
competitors,” Kempf said.
“But we’ve had calls that they said
they called us because we are a womanowned company,” Murphy said.
Kempf said she often works with
women in the choices they make for
their homes, and that’s a change that
has taken place in the years she’s been
with the company.
“It used to be that the man made
the decisions with the wife giving
input behind the scenes,” Kempf said.
“The decision-making is not made by
just one or the other anymore.”
Since they are in a minority in the
construction business, Murphy said,
any potential hire is made aware of
the fact that Lemonds is a womanowned company.
“We make sure they understand
that this is a woman-owned company
and that they will be working for
women and taking orders from
women,” Murphy said.
Being a woman in the construction
business has its advantages, as well.
Kempf said she loves the design
aspect of her job and working with
people to create their dream home.
“I like the creativity. We’re exterior
designers,” she said. “I like the aspect
of helping poeple give their home
that extra touch.”
Regardless of who owns the company, both said for their customers, it’s
usually not an issue, because their
customers are pleased with the company’s work.
“We’ve had a long history of quality workmanship, and most of our
business is referral business,” Kempf
said. “So I don’t think there are too
many thinking about the fact that
this is a woman-owned company.”
Being sisters could bring some difficulties to the job of co-owning a com-
pany, but Kempf and Murphy have
found that being a family-owned
business works very well for them.
“I think Jean and I are compatible
enough that we really work well
together,” Kempf said.
“You air your opinion and you let it
go. Some people can’t do that, even if
they’re not working with a sibling.”
Murphy said. “We can be each other’s
sounding boards, which is helpful, too.”
What also helps the sisters run the
business smoothly is to keep work
and family separate.
“We have to keep a separation
between being co-workers and being
family. You don’t want to damage
either relationship.” Murphy said. “I
think our family is more surprised that
we don’t talk about family at work.”
The support they have goes beyond
the sibling relationship they share.
“We have a good support system,
no only with our family, but with our
employees and also our product reps,”
Murphy said.

“With the help of wonderful
family and friends, I’ve been able
to do it.”
Whitcomb said her whole family helps out. Her parents, Maxine
and Allen Wilkins, come to the
shop nearly every day from Clay
Center. Whitcomb’s husband,
Gary, also helps on a daily basis.
Her sister, Judy Mitchell of
Superior, has worked in retail for
many years and lent her expertise
to Whitcomb. Whitcomb’s close
friends have been a Godsend as
far as staffing the shop.
Whitcomb can’t really describe
what each person does to help
her out, because she said they all
help out however they can.
Maxine said she was more
than happy to lend her help and
support to her daughter.
“It’s been her dream for a long
time. It seemed like a possibility,” she said. “The timing wasn’t
what she thought, but when you
have an opportunity, you should
go for it.”
Whitcomb said she never
would have opened the shop
without the support of her family
and friends. It was their insistence that gave her the push
needed to follow through with it.
“There was always this dream
of doing something,” she said.
“They said ‘go for it and we’ll
help you out.’ I couldn’t do it
without them.”

rom the time she was very
young, Dacia Oakeson said she
wanted to work in the health
care field.
So, it is no surprise to
Oakeson’s mother, Rhonda McIntyre,
that Oakeson is now a nurse practitioner for Mary Lanning Healthcare
Primary Care Clinics.
“She’s always wanted to be in the
health field,” McIntyre said. “She
loves science, and she’s a good student.”
In a way, though, McIntyre helped
forge the path Oakeson took, as she
has been a nurse herself since 1985.
Asked if her mom had anything to
do with her choice to enter the health
field, Oakeson says that while she didn’t pursue a career in healthcare only
because of her mom, that fact did
play heavily in her decision.
“My mom has such a good rapport
with her patients and she’s such a caring person, who doesn’t want to emu-
late that?” Oakeson said.
Both women work for Mary
Lanning Healthcare, and have even
worked side by side. Now, McIntyre
works as an registered nurse in radiology special procedures.
Oakeson started her health career in
the lab at Mary Lanning. She then
pursued her bachelor’s in nursing, but
decided to become a nurse practitioner to be able to serve patients on a
larger level.
“I knew I was going not going to
stop with just my bachelor’s and
nurse practitioner seemed to be a
good fit,” Oakeson said. “I get to be
more involved in patient care.”
Before Oakeson became a nurse
practitioner, she and McIntyre worked
together as a nurses in pre-op for outpatient surgery. Both said they liked
the pace and the people in pre-op.
“Patients were generally healthier,”
Oakeson said. “You get to interact
with so many people.”
McIntyre said that besides working
alongside her daughter, the pre-op
floor was “like one big family.”
Both said they enjoy their co-workers now, but working together was
special.

DACIA OAKESON FOLLOWS
MOM’S PATH
TO HEALTH CARE CAREER
DEANN STUMPE

F
rom the time she was very
young, Dacia Oakeson said she
wanted to work in the health
care field.
So, it is no surprise to
Oakeson’s mother, Rhonda McIntyre,
that Oakeson is now a nurse practitioner for Mary Lanning Healthcare
Primary Care Clinics.
“She’s always wanted to be in the
health field,” McIntyre said. “She
loves science, and she’s a good student.”
In a way, though, McIntyre helped
forge the path Oakeson took, as she
has been a nurse herself since 1985.
Asked if her mom had anything to
do with her choice to enter the health
field, Oakeson says that while she didn’t pursue a career in healthcare only
because of her mom, that fact did
play heavily in her decision.
“My mom has such a good rapport
with her patients and she’s such a caring person, who doesn’t want to emu-
late that?” Oakeson said.
Both women work for Mary
Lanning Healthcare, and have even
worked side by side. Now, McIntyre
works as an registered nurse in radiology special procedures.
Oakeson started her health career in
the lab at Mary Lanning. She then
pursued her bachelor’s in nursing, but
decided to become a nurse practitioner to be able to serve patients on a
larger level.
“I knew I was going not going to
stop with just my bachelor’s and
nurse practitioner seemed to be a
good fit,” Oakeson said. “I get to be
more involved in patient care.”
Before Oakeson became a nurse
practitioner, she and McIntyre worked
together as a nurses in pre-op for outpatient surgery. Both said they liked
the pace and the people in pre-op.
“Patients were generally healthier,”
Oakeson said. “You get to interact
with so many people.”
McIntyre said that besides working
alongside her daughter, the pre-op
floor was “like one big family.”
Both said they enjoy their co-workers now, but working together was
special.

“We figured we’d probably have to
move on,” Kempf said.
But after some discussions and
thought, the sisters decided to take
ownership of the company themselves. That happened in 1998.
“At that point we’d been doing
what we were doing for a long time,
and we liked the business,” Kempf
said. “It felt natural to move into the
ownership part of it.”
Today, besides owning the company,
Kempf is the sales manager and Murphy
is the business manager. They also hired
an operations manager, as well as about
10 other employees, plus crews.
Both said it is unusual for a construction company such as theirs to
be owned by women and that com-

petitors have tried to use it to their
advantage. But that tactic generally
has not worked, and being a womanowned company has actually worked
in Lemonds’ favor.
“We do run into comments from
competitors,” Kempf said.
“But we’ve had calls that they said
they called us because we are a womanowned company,” Murphy said.
Kempf said she often works with
women in the choices they make for
their homes, and that’s a change that
has taken place in the years she’s been
with the company.
“It used to be that the man made
the decisions with the wife giving
input behind the scenes,” Kempf said.
“The decision-making is not made by
just one or the other anymore.”
Since they are in a minority in the
construction business, Murphy said,
any potential hire is made aware of
the fact that Lemonds is a womanowned company.
“We make sure they understand
that this is a woman-owned company
and that they will be working for
women and taking orders from
women,” Murphy said.
Being a woman in the construction
business has its advantages, as well.
Kempf said she loves the design
aspect of her job and working with
people to create their dream home.
“I like the creativity. We’re exterior
designers,” she said. “I like the aspect
of helping poeple give their home
that extra touch.”
Regardless of who owns the company, both said for their customers, it’s
usually not an issue, because their
customers are pleased with the company’s work.
“We’ve had a long history of quality workmanship, and most of our
business is referral business,” Kempf
said. “So I don’t think there are too
many thinking about the fact that
this is a woman-owned company.”
Being sisters could bring some difficulties to the job of co-owning a com-
pany, but Kempf and Murphy have
found that being a family-owned
business works very well for them.
“I think Jean and I are compatible
enough that we really work well
together,” Kempf said.
“You air your opinion and you let it
go. Some people can’t do that, even if
they’re not working with a sibling.”
Murphy said. “We can be each other’s
sounding boards, which is helpful, too.”
What also helps the sisters run the
business smoothly is to keep work
and family separate.
“We have to keep a separation
between being co-workers and being
family. You don’t want to damage
either relationship.” Murphy said. “I
think our family is more surprised that
we don’t talk about family at work.”
The support they have goes beyond
the sibling relationship they share.
“We have a good support system,
no only with our family, but with our
employees and also our product reps,”
Murphy said.

“With the help of wonderful
family and friends, I’ve been able
to do it.”
Whitcomb said her whole family helps out. Her parents, Maxine
and Allen Wilkins, come to the
shop nearly every day from Clay
Center. Whitcomb’s husband,
Gary, also helps on a daily basis.
Her sister, Judy Mitchell of
Superior, has worked in retail for
many years and lent her expertise
to Whitcomb. Whitcomb’s close
friends have been a Godsend as
far as staffing the shop.
Whitcomb can’t really describe
what each person does to help
her out, because she said they all
help out however they can.
Maxine said she was more
than happy to lend her help and
support to her daughter.
“It’s been her dream for a long
time. It seemed like a possibility,” she said. “The timing wasn’t
what she thought, but when you
have an opportunity, you should
go for it.”
Whitcomb said she never
would have opened the shop
without the support of her family
and friends. It was their insistence that gave her the push
needed to follow through with it.
“There was always this dream
of doing something,” she said.
“They said ‘go for it and we’ll
help you out.’ I couldn’t do it
without them.”

MOM, OTHERS TO RUN SHOP

F
or a long time, Connie
Whitcomb dreamed of opening a boutique.
The idea started in wistful
discussions with her mom
while the two tended tables filled
with embellished garments and floral arrangements at craft shows.
As a hobby, Whitcomb added
designs to clothing items, and
Maxine Wilkins, a long-time florist,
made silk arrangements. The
women started selling their designs
at craft fairs and local events in
2007 as a way to spend time together. The shows were fruitful in both
sales and memories made. And they
gave way to a new idea for
Whitcomb.
“I always said, ‘Wouldn’t that be
fun to have a shop?’ ” Whitcomb
said.
She started thinking seriously
about opening a shop post-retirement a few years ago, and then she
happened to see a downtown
Hastings location open up last year.
Whitcomb isn’t yet retired and
won’t be for several more years, so
the timing wasn’t perfect, but the
location and opportunity was. She
launched M&M Designs at 219 N.
Lincoln Ave. in September 2011.
Whitcomb is currently employed
as a grain accountant at Cooperative
Producers Inc. She’s been there 34
years, so opening a retail shop is a
completely new endeavor.
“It’s so opposite of what I do,” she
said. “I’m learning every day and I
have so much to learn.”
On top of her full-time job, she
said she spends an additional 20-25
hours a week at the shop.
“The hardest part is not letting
either my job or the shop suffer,”
she said. “The juggling has been dif-
ficult but rewarding.”
She also spends hours looking for
those one-of-a-kind items that fill
the boutique.
“If I’m not here in the shop, I’m
at home, looking on the computer,”
she said. “I try to find something
really different and unique —
things that have that ‘wow’ factor.”
Whitcomb knew opening a shop
while she was still at CPI would
mean she would need help. That’s
where family and friends stepped in
and made Whitcomb’s dream possible.
“One of the deals was that I knew I
was going to have to hire out,” she said.
