Buffalo Rocket www.buffalorocket.com Distributing to North Buffalo, West Side and Riverside • Established in 1969 Publishers of North Buffalo Rocket, West Side Times & Riverside Times COMMUNITY NEWS Vol. XLIII ISSUE No. 18 • Thursday, May 3, 2012 Western New Yorkers Who Died Or Were Killed In Vietnam Are Remembered the Vietnam War or outside of Vietnam); the graves of the 51 have been decorated with U.S. flags during this 15-day period and information about them is included in the book. To reach the chapel, enter Forest Lawn through the Delaware Avenue or Main Street gates and follow the white line on the road. About Forest Lawn: As one of the first deliberately designed and professionally landscaped rural cemeteries in the United States, Forest Lawn is at the heart of Western New York’s cultural tourism renaissance. Its first interment took place in 1850; today there Pat Kavanagh presents a book honoring Western New York’s fallen heroes from the Vietnam War. The book will be on display at Forest Lawn until May 15th. Forest Lawn Historian and Vietnam Veteran, Patrick Kavanagh, has researched, organized and compiled “In Remembrance Of,” a book honoring Western New York’s fallen heroes from the Vietnam War. The book includes information on more than 500 men and one woman with direct ties to the eight counties of Western New York who were killed or died while on active duty in Vietnam. Mr. Kavanagh served as a SP/5 medic in the U.S. Army from 1967-1970, including one year (October 1968-1969) in Vietnam; he was honorably discharged in July 1970. He completed this project “as a labor of love so that those who made the ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten.” Copies of the book containing newspaper articles, death notices, photos and obituaries will be available for review at the chapel in Forest Lawn for 15 days – one day for each year the U.S. was involved in the Vietnam War. It was on April 30th in 1975 when the last American servicemen died in the war and the last Marines guarding the U.S. Embassy in Saigon lifted off, signaling the end of the war. The book will then be on display daily in the Forest Hertel-North Buffalo Business Assn. Announces Monthly Meeting The Hertel North-Buffalo Business Association will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 Thursday, May 3 Isolated T-Storms High 77° Low 63° beginning at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will take place in their new office at 1510 Hertel Avenue. Forest Lawn volunteers will be on hand during viewing hours to assist the public in locating specific names within the book and with the duplication of any information found about their friends and/or loved ones. On the hour at 3:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. every day while the book is on display in the chapel, one page will be turned so that by the end of the 15 days, every veteran in the book will have been featured. Veterans in the chapel at these times will be invited to turn the pages. Adamo 43 Habmoor. Sometimes, it seems, it takes a crisis to draw crowd. Last Spring, local cultural treasures such as Shakespeare in the Park were fulminating when the then county executive, can’t remember his name, ruled to cut their county funding, some of which amounted to little more than a hatful of change. They banded together in a “Give for Greatness” campaign with a free concert by the Philharmonic, at which donations would be requested, with lyrics provided by Randy Kramer’s MusicalFare Theater. More than 1,100 supporters dropped by, contributing more than $10,000. The following week Rocket Man wrote: “It just seemed as if it should have been more. ‘We were just thrilled with all the results,’ Kramer said. ‘Next year’ is already in the works.” “Next year” arrived this past Sunday. For just under an hour and a half the throng at Kleinhans heard the orchestra at its finest under conductor Paul Ferington, Kramer and Theresa Quinn cramming maximum Gershwin into four hands and five minutes, and glorious show music by Ellen Horst, Tom Owen, Jenn Stafford and Pascal Frisina. “What a thrill to sing ‘Sound of Music’ in front of that orchestra,” said Ellen, a nationally travelled actress who has returned to honor us all with performances in the likes of, say, “Imagining Madoff” last fall at the Jewish Repertory Theatre. “I get to sing so seldom – it’s nice to find the voice is still intact!” The thing is, though, that absent the frantic response to the Collins cutback (oh, yeah, there’s his name), enthusiasm was curbed. Publicity was sparse. Rocket Man learned of it only at the last minute, thanks to ArtVoice’s Anthony Chase, who treated us to an additional half-hour of people-watching. We heard one chap rattle off the number of entitlements he was receiving, then observe that this sort of thing was all he could afford. (Requested donation was $5 – we presume he made that minimum, although according to organizer Kramer, the average kickin was double that.) But 20 minutes before downbeat, the hall seemed practically empty. Eventually they filled it out a little, about 600 or so in attendance according to the clicker of actor Richard Hummert, whose seasonal gigs suggest he may have been categorizing them into naughty and nice. Seriously, though, this deserved much, much more – more fanfare, more people, even a little more attention to sound balance, which was definitely biased in favor of the instruments. The crisis may be past, but the cause remains just, and only about 600 folks capitalized on the musical deal of the century. Do we need to bring Chris Collins back again? She was with a group of other ladies and she explained who I was and about the column. The ladies, I assume, were all Italian as she said to them in Italian that I mostly complain in my writings. She was unaware that I understand a little Italian and knew what she said. No problem, as I use this space to voice my concerns on some issues. I do, however write about other topics that are positive. Saying that, I now will go into a complaining mode. I recently took my annual adventure of driving back from southern Florida. The weather there was in the low to mid eighties every day with sunshine. If it rained, it rained at night and did not affect the daily routine. Enough of that as I want to go into the drive home and to do some comparisons. The biggest gripe I have, is again, why is there such a difference in gas prices from state to state? I filled my tank in South Carolina for $3.50 a gallon. I filled my tank in this area when I got home for $4.10. Sixty cents a gallon more? For 15 gallons that is a difference of nine dollars. Why is that? In Florida I filled up at $3.85 and thought that was high. I am well aware that we live in the most taxed state. Sales tax in the states I stopped to eat in ranged from minimal to six percent. Here we pay almost nine percent. Drove over 1,300 miles on beautiful divided interstate highways for free. Up until you reach the last 80 and the New York state border. As we all know, you have to pay tolls on the New York state thruway. Let me add that all states I traveled in have the exits at the mile markers. In other words, exit one is one mile into the state, exit 50 is 50 miles from the border, and so on. Not in New York! If you travel much you know the difference and how convenient it is to have the exits at the mile mark. Guess the New York State Department of Transportation does not have anyone CHECK US OUT ONLINE WWW.BUFFALOROCKET.COM smart enough to figure out how to do that. Nor do they care to. Why is it that in Florida my house is a total electric house with air conditioning on all day and night, the bill is cheaper than my empty house in New York? There is no gas so we do not have to deal with that rip off utility. We do have water and again, no comparison as far as service and cost. The water bill is at least a third less than Buffalo. There is no state income tax! So you would ask "why don’t you just move to Florida and shut up?" I love Florida in the winter, but that is it. Lots of friends down there but most are snow birds like us. It is hot there in the summer which is not so pleasant. Better than half the population has left Florida and headed back up north. The most important reason is I love this area in the spring, summer and fall. I grew up here and will most likely die here. If I could in some way contribute to making right all the wrong things that are happening in this state, I would like to do so. If that is complaining, then Vicky, I am a complainer. Until we change the status quo in our state, you will hear me loud and clear.
