Varmt välkommen till ett Symposium om Migration och transkulturella möten i
vård och socialt arbete med presentationer från fyra initerade forskare.
Människor söker sig till Sverige för att finna en tryggare tillvaro. I mötet med dessa
människor ställs sjukvård och socialtjänst inför nya utmaningar som kräver kunskap,
reflektion och diskussion kring relationen mellan kultur och hälsa.
Inte minst är förhållandet mellan kultur och hälsa viktigt för barn och ungdomar som
lätt hamnar i ett kulturellt spänningsfält som inbegriper identitet, religiösa traditioner,
olika synsätt på hälsa, sociala konventioner och förväntningar på sjukvård och socialtjänst. En del av dessa barn och ungdomar kommer hit utan sin familj och många bär
med sig svåra trauman.

How does culture affect understanding and
treatment for mental health problems?
Sami Timimi, psykiater och professor i psykiatri,
University of Lincoln.
Our beliefs and practices around children, families, and
mental health, are all shaped by culture. This talk will introduce the audience to the variety of social/cultural constructions that exist for childhood, child rearing, families, health
and mental health that can be found in different cultures.

University of Greenwich.
This presentation examines the experiences of black
youths and their families living in socially deprived areas
of London and the way in which they recognise the term
‘black neighbourhood’ as a resource for ethnic identity formation and collective mobilisation. Despite of the problems
that are typically associated with ‘black neighbourhoods’,
these neighbourhoods also represent spaces through
which social capital resources such as reciprocal ties of
trust and solidarity are generated.
These spaces provide a sense of wellbeing and belonging.
However, the analysis will also show that young people’s
experiences of the neighbourhood are not always positive, and such spaces create negative outcomes for them
and their families. I will highlight the restrictive capacity of
‘black neighbourhoods’ and the ways in which they limit
opportunities to ‘get on’ in terms of social mobility.

Understanding the culturally constructed nature of our own
beliefs and practices (including our professional cultures) has far reaching implications for practice. How more
culturally aware understandings can be incorporated into
services that provide mental health treatment and support
for children and families from immigrant and refugee backgrounds, will then be explored.

Presentationen fokuserar på resultaten från studien GREEN
(Gothenburg Research on Ethnicity-related Experiences
and identity Narratives) där ungdomar och unga vuxna har
fått berätta om sina erfarenheter relaterade till kultur och
etnicitet. Dessa berättelser kommer vidare belysas utifrån
internationell forskning om de psykologiska konsekvenser
dessa erfarenheter riskerar medföra.
