Mark said they had a terrific time. “It was the best ten
dollars I have ever spent,” added Andrew. Many audience
members enjoyed the casual wear and the talent showcase
the most, which is understandable considering the contestants did a great job.
Many comments were made about William Gilmour, the
young man who performed the Single Ladies dance to the
best of his ability. It was an outstandingly funny performance. Patrick Gouveia also got several cheers. People
seemed to really enjoy his “Gustav mashed potato modeling
talent.” Both contestants were very
original with their talents.
The show could not have gone
so well without our Mistress ofCeremonies, Rayana Grace. Not
only did she look gorgeous, but she
did a great job also. She described
her experience as “the best experience of my high school career so
far.” She had a lot of fun and even cried when she got home.
“It made me realize how fast high school has gone by.” The
audience loved the show, our (funding) goal had been met,
but there were those who weren’t so pleased.
Mr. Whaler is, after all, a competition so there was clearly
a good amount of disappointment. Anthony DosSantos, one
of the contestants, said that even though he had fun and met
many new people, he was “extremely
disappointed” that he didn’t win.
Then there were those like Marléna
Johnson, the girl with the beautiful
voice, who said “I wanted everyone
to win.” In the end, there was only
one winner, and everyone knows that
he deserved it.
From his casual wear to his formal
wear and then to his impressive talent, Sean Vieira proved to everyone
that he deserved the crown. When
asked “Who do you think deserved to win,” most audience
members used one strong word, “DEFINITELY” Sean Vieira. The Dean of Students, Ms. Centenich, strongly agreed.
“He was very well prepared, organized, articulate - one of
my favorites. I knew he would do well because of the practices.” When I spoke to Sean about his experience he said he
had a lot of fun but it was also “an emotional roller coaster.”
His favorite part was the rehearsals, a part that many contestants favored and described as the “funnest” part of their
experience. Before going on stage, Sean said he felt excited,
worried, happy, nervous, and so much more, but in the end,
he pulled through and won that victorious crown.

Assistant Headmaster Pereira Leaving
New Bedford High for the FBI
By Rola Hassoun
M
r. Pereira, assistant headmaster at New Bedford
High School, is leaving his great job to take part
in a dream occupation.
Everyone has a job that they have always wanted. Some
of us wanted to be secret agents, some wanted to be fire
fighters, but Mr. Pereira wanted to join the FBI and now
he is fulfilling his dream. He applied to the academy in
January of 2007 and now he can make his great move.
Even before applying Mr. Pereira had ambitions to join the
FBI. He said, “I have always dreamed of having a job that
was exciting.” He described how he has gone through the
office experience and after doing so he is more interested
in getting out of the office and doing something more
entertaining. It is something he feels he must do.
He will be secluded from any family or friends for five
months - only the beginning of a dream job. He is going
to start training at an FBI academy in Quantico, Virginia. Within these five
months Mr. Pereira will not be able to leave or have any visitors.
“...I’m not unhappy At the moment he does not know where either he or his family is
going to live, he does not even know the career path he is going
with this job,
but I’m going from a to follow but he says that it is unlikely that his new job will be in
the Boston area. He hopes to work with the Criminal sector of
great job to an
the FBI agency but as of now “finishing the academy is my first
unbelievable job. I goal,” he said. He simply wants to do the best job possible and
love New Bedford. I have a positive impact on the academy.
Along with this dream comes the heavy commitment of being

dedicate himself to his job completely and his family understands the situation.
- Mr Pereira Mr. Pereira’s life style and job are not the only things that are
changing. This drastic move to reach his life’s dream will lead
to a decrease in his salary. Once he is done with his training his
starting salary will be shockingly different at lower than 50% of what he is currently earning in his
many duties at New Bedford High School. As you can see from this ratio, Mr. Pereira is very passionate about his dream. The salary will of course increase over the years, but one can tell that this
is a man who is very dedicated to his work and his family. “Money doesn’t matter to me. We could
use the money - everyone could - but I’m going to make sacrifices.”
Will New Bedford High School be his home again in the future? Unfortunately, Mr. Pereira says:
“it is highly unlikely. I’ve thought this out thoroughly.” His brother who is a FBI special agent says
he loves his job and has infuenced Mr. Pereira’s decision. When Mr. Pereira was asked if he was
going to be happier he delightfully answered: “OH YEA! I’m not unhappy with this job, but I’m
going from a great job to an unbelievable job. I love New Bedford. I love my job, but this is my
dream”.
On February 16 we will say farewell to one of the most hardworking and respected educators
at New Bedford High School. We wish him the best in his career, the best for his family, and we
thank him for the great time he spent with the New Bedford High School Whalers.

The History of Black History Month
by Celine Houtman
A
s most New Bedford High School students and staff know, February is nationally known as Black History Month. I’m here to tell you
about how it started, and how the African-American men and women in our
nation’s history has helped shape our country today.
Since the year 1926, Americans nationwide have annually celebrated an
entire month dedicated to black history. Originally, it was called “Negro History Week”,
and then later became “Black History Month”
about fifty years later when the Black Power

at the age of twenty enrolled in high school.
Being the ambitious and smart young man he
was, he graduated within two years and went
off to Harvard, where he rightfully earned
his doctorate in history. Dr. Woodson was
highly disgraced as well as disgusted to find
that in many, if not all, history books greatly ignored the African-American
community in America. When they were mentioned, however, they would
always be inferior in the social scene, and always mentioned as slaves.
Woodson then decided to take action – he took on the challenge of writing
the black Americans into the
nation’s picture. In 1915, he
and Jesse E. Moorland created
the Association for the Study
of Negro Life & History. In
1926, he began Negro History
Week to bring national attention to black people throughout America’s history.
Woodson chose the second
week of February for history

Lincoln, February 12 , 1809.
But wait! February has more than just Douglass and Lincoln to show its
significance for Black History Month. Here are some of those facts:
• February 3rd 1870: The 15th Amendment was passed, therefore giving
any one of any “race, color, or previous servitude” the right to vote.
• February 25th, 1870: The first black U.S. senator, Hiram R. Revels,
took his oath in office.
• February 12th, 1909: The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) was founded by both black and white
citizens alike in New York City.
• February 1st, 1960: A group of black college students in Greensboro,
North Carolina, began a “sit-in” at a segregated Woolworth’s lunch
counter. This soon became know as a civil-rights movement.
•
Well, there you go! You now

some interesting facts about why
February was chosen. To test

alentine’s Day is a day when couples give and
receive gifts to each other, to show how they really
feel for one another. Candy is the most common gift
given on this couple’s day. So when your boyfriend or
girlfriend is picking out your gift, do you want them
to put a lot of thought into that gift? Wouldn’t it be
nice if that gift meant something, even if it is just some
lousy candy? Well, we asked a few of our New Bedford

hearts are very cute; you can always save one and surprise someone with that meaning. It’s like a mystery game. They are

rose they would choose and
why:
• Jada states: “I would give a red rose because it symbolizes love and that’s what Valentines Day is all about.”
• Jennifer Amaral “I would choose a white rose because
to me white symbolizes peace and friendship I would
usually give this rose to one of my best friends.” As
Andy Soares was asked this question there was no
doubt in his mind what rose he would choose and what
the meaning of it would be: “If I were to give someone
a rose I would give
them a blue rose, Everyone thinks that red
symbolized love but
to me blue symbolizes
new love and new
romance.”
• Some other responses
were: “Black because

Hayden Pepin. Of

shirt giving a quite short and straight to the point response. Kristen Sharp follows with: “I would give them
a blue rose because its unique and special so I’d be telling the person they are special to me.”
• Kenya Baer-Clark: “I would give them a white rose
because white to me symbolizes purity and just seems
fresh. It just gives the message I love you in a clear
simple way.” She had stated her answer with a big smile
indicating she knew exactly to whom that rose would be
given.

Valentine’s G ifts

For Your Boyfriend
By Kendra Lebeau
H
aving a boyfriend for Valentines Day is nice because he might get
you the perfect gift for that day, but have you ever thought about
him? Have you ever thought
about getting him a gift for Valentines Day? Maybe he would
like a shirt or a
pair of shoes.
There are many
special gifts you
can buy for your
boyfriend on
Valentine’s Day.
Here are a few
gift ideas for
your sweet heart:
If he has a
favorite sport or hobbies try getting something relating to
that. For example, if he is
a
musician and plays guitar
or drums you can buy
some strings or guitar
pick or new set or sticks
and buy an inexpensive
box and put the gift in it
wrap it with a ribbon and
a
card. Or maybe make
jewelry out of his hobby. All you need is a
chain and guitar pick (the guitar pick can
be his favorite color), all you need to do
is make a hole big enough to thread the
chain through and there you go an instant
necklace that your boyfriend will love.
If your boyfriend loves chocolate you can buy
a small gift box and put 365 chocolate kisses
in the box and a note explaining to him that
he can have a kiss every day of the year,
or to be more romantic the kisses can
represent the number of days you guys
have been going out. If you wanted
to decorate the box you can put little
hearts around it or anything he would
love. This is one yummy gift idea that
your Valentine will like.
Another great gift idea is to take a picture
of you and him together or just a picture
of you. You can frame the picture in a
nice clean frame. The frame can be his
favorite color or a
just a plain frame
that will look good
with the picture.
This will be a great
addition to his room
or if he has his own
place.
One great gift
idea that he will
love is to design a T-shirt that praises him for the man
he thinks he is. You can do this online through web
sites like Café Press or you can create an iron one
with special printer paper and transfer the design onto
the shirt yourself. The shirt can say something he will
be proud to wear and public like ‘World’s Best Boyfriend”, or “All Man”. You can find a great quote about
strength on the internet, or the shirt can have an inside
joke that only the two of you understand.
Men love their cars, and they will love you for buying a gift for their
car. Your options are
endless. You can get
a license plate frame,
a steering wheel
cozy, or seat covers, if his car seats
are worn. Other car
gifts you can buy are
a wash and wax set,
or a gift certificate
good for several
car washes, or a car
detail. Better yet, you
can give a coupon for a free car wash done by you. However, make sure you
are experienced in car washing if you plan to take that route.

Cool Stuff
Horoscopes
Aries (March 21-April 19) ~ A business opportunity is near.
Be assertive and you will succeed, but be timid and you will
fail. Don’t let anxiety get rid of your passionate side.
Taurus (April 20-May 20) ~You will need to face your fears
in order to deal with someone that makes you feel anxious.
Connecting with your artistic side will help you conquer
your fear.
Gemini (May 21- June 20) ~ You are acting too stubborn you
need to see other people’s side of the story. Love is high if
you make the right decisions. Think logically and you will
get what you desire.
Cancer (June 21- July 22) ~Work out your problems before
you start an argument. Try not to be so negative and crabby
and show your loving side.
Leo (July 23- August 22) ~ Your life may seem a bit more
complicated than you though. Relieve some stress by giving
you what your heart desires. Don’t give up on the future, just
because you don’t know how to get there doesn’t mean it’s
real. Holding on to what you need should ultimately pay off
in the end.
February 2009
Libra (September 23- October 22) ~ You may feel like you are
in a mental block today, but don’t give up, you are capable of
more than you know. Don’t let your lazy side take over.
The Crimson Courier
Scorpio (October 23- November 21) ~ A difficult decision will
arise between being yourself or keep up with social appearances. Your current decisions are not that important right
now because they are just redefining your current affiliation
with someone. The string between friends and romantic love
will be tested.

Sagittarius (November 22- December 21) ~ Someone who
seems annoying and is always disagreeing with you may be
doing this for specific reason. A friend might relieve some
stress by taking it out on you, be straightforward with this
person and tell them how it’s making you feel.
Capricorn (December 22- January 19) ~ You are too cautious,
have some fun. Take a vacation, go on an adventure, be ambitious. Love can spark; you just have to dig for it.
Aquarius (January 20- March 20) ~ No matter how hard you
want to spice things up in your relationship you’ll just have to
wait and see how things go. The harder you try to reach your
goal now, the farther away your goal will be. Don’t stress things
should go your way you just have to take one step at a time.
Communicating with friends should help your mind relax.
Pisces (February 20 - March 20) ~ Don’t let distractions mess up
Virgo (August 23- September 22) ~ Succeeding in your
your relationship. Use your artistic side and be imaginative for

Ugg
Boots

A
lthough they seem expensive, these
sheepskin boots are hard to resist.
Ugg boots orginally came from Australia.
People would use the boots during mild winter
days to keep their feet warm. Farmers would
wear the boots to keep warm and the Australian surfers would use
them after they finished riding the waves.
Believe it or not the word “ugg” was short for ugly, as
legend has it. These days pretty much every girl would die for a pair.
In my opninon, these warm & comfortable boots are both stylish & good for extremely
cold days. They come in all types of colors from bright to more netural colors. They also
have different styles - from tall to short and even crochet & mini.
Have you ever heard about Ugg boots for men? The Ugg company have now even made
boots to satisfy a man as well. If you were to look around now you most likely wouldn’t
see any men wearing Uggs, but let’s see what happens. As they do for ladies they also have
different styles for men, from the usual tall to short and moccasins tall to cuff short. The
ladies & men Uggs don’t differ much, in fact they just might look slighly different. I did
mention how they were once short for ugly right? Well I’m pretty sure millons of people
would agree with me in saying these are some pretty amazing boots.

t’s really not something the New Bedford High School wrestling team is
not accustomed to. This team that was established by Coach Pimental in
1997 has just won its 10th consecutive Big 3 title defeating Durfee Wednesday
night 47-15 without standout senior captain Curtis Gomes. The effort put forth
by the rest of New Bedford’s wrestlers was more then enough to compensate
for the void of one of their elite wrestlers. Let us look ahead to probable big 3
all-stars now.

saying that: “It feels good
to get the job done”. While winning the Big 3 is no easy task the Whalers set
the bar higher. This is a team that has made state championships in back-toback seasons and has their sights set on winning it all this year. With sectionals right around the corner they are hoping to get Curtis Gomes and Dennis
Costa back for their push in the tournament. Coach Pimental said it himself:
“At the sectionals, the wrestling gets better and every point counts,” he said.
“If you have a wrestler missing, instead of three points for a win, you could
get pinned and that’s a 9-point swing. It’s tough to make up points like that in
the tournament.”

lthough the New Bedford high varsity basketball team isn’t the
number one seed in the league tournament, we do have some
of the best talent we have ever seen, including one of the two freshmen that play for the team. Stevie Wynn, at a little over six feet,
averages 10.4 points a game. What amazes viewers about this very
talented freshman is not his scoring, but how comfortable he looks
on the floor playing with so many upperclassmen.
You might think would be hard dealing with all the pressure of
Steve Wynn being a freshmen and
Proud to be #22
playing alongside
many juniors and
seniors, but Stevie says he doesn’t mind it
at all. “I grew up with most of these guys,
playing at the boys club and in AAU
leagues,” said Stevie when asked about
his relationship with the team. Although
Stevie has been a great asset to the team
and is ranked the 4th best freshmen in
New England, he feels there is always
room for improvement. “I still have a
long way to go though I’ve worked hard
to get where I am” says the freshman. Stevie has attended many basketball camps,
including an all-American high school
basketball camp,
which consists of
the best players
in New England.
Stevie was the
only freshman that
was invited that year. ”They worked us extremely hard that year,
but it was also very fun,” replied Stevie when asked about his time
at the camp.
Unlike any other year in the history of the New Bedford high school
basketball team, there is not only one freshmen playing for the varsity
basketball team, but two. Jonathan Fortes is not only a freshman peer
and teammate, but also a great friend of Stevie Wynn’s. When I asked
him if he bonded better with Jonathan more so than the other teammates seeing how he is also a freshman, he said “Yeah, he’s my best
friend. He’s like my brother. He spends the night at my house every weekend. We also spend a
lot of time together on the court too. We’re always playing basketball at the park. Unfortunately
the team hasn’t had they’re best year and needs to win three out of the next four games to be
invited to the tournament. Stevie on the other hand, has some high hopes for the team. “We lost
many close games this season so we need to work harder than ever to make the tournament.”
Hopefully, they can pull it off by using their usual method of taking it one game at a time, and
no early celebrating.
Good luck Whalers, hope to see you in the tournament!
