Chester F. Czubala selflessly gave of himself
both physically and through all his knowledge
of plumbing, construction and electricity, his
daughter Sandra Bigbie said.
“He was very passionate about helping people and working hard,” Bigbie said.
Czubala, 86, of Cedar Lake, a retired Hammond Fire Department battalion chief, also
was a plumber. He belonged to both Firefighters Union Local 556 and Plumbers Union
Locals 307 and 210. Czubala worked for Lassie
Plumbing, which was bought by his brother and
is now owned by a third generation family member. He was a charter member of the Hammond

Programs. She was also involved in several other religious

Bernice in 1952, the couple met through siblings
and enjoyed dancing together.
“At weddings, he would wear out my mom,
then others would all be in line waiting to dance
with him,” Bigbie said. “He would wear them out
too. He was a great dancer especially the polka.
He could dance all night long.”
Czubala loved camping, taking his family on
trips every year.
Passionate about his church and singing,
Czubala was an active member of St. Michael
the Archangel National Catholic Church where
he sang in the choir.
In her eulogy, Czubala’s granddaughter Carrie Czubala said “ to say that he was a man who
would give the shirt off his back for anyone is
not quite enough as he was the man who would
also give his pants, his shoes, everything in his
wallet and every last bit of his physical strength
to help anyone in need.”

donated her time frequently to
those less fortunate. In her later
years, moved to the Cincinnati
area, resided at the New England Club, was a member of the
Red Hatter's Club and was voted
Queen of her Chapter for several
years.
Betty was a loving mother,
