Victor McCurley
Mary Niedermyer
Mary Elizabeth (Epperson)
Niedermyer, 90, died Sunday,
June 2, at the Hospice with Heart
Hospice House, Glenwood.
A Mass of Christian Burial was
held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June
6, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church,
Logan, with Rev. Michael Berner
officiating. Musicians were Becky
Loftus and Bruce Niedermyer.
Selections were, “In the Garden,”
and “How Great Thou Art.”
Pallbearers were Todd Newland, Scott Newland, Matt
Niedermyer, Bruce Niedermyer, Jarrod Niedermyer,
Ryan Niedermyer, Alex Niedermyer and Josh Granum.
Final resting place was at the St. Bridget’s Catholic
Cemetery, Magnolia.
Mary was born Sept. 26, 1922, to Roy and Nellie
(Cody) Epperson in Ragland Township, Harrison
County. She was raised in the Pisgah area and graduated
from Modale High School in 1940. Mary taught school
in the Harrison County Country Schools for a few years.
She married Milton Niedermyer on Feb. 28, 1946, at
the Pisgah Catholic Rectory. The couple farmed in the
Pisgah area. Their farm has the distinction of being
registered as a 100-year farm in Iowa.
Mary was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church,
Logan. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and playing
cards. In addition, Mary enjoyed cooking and
baking – she was known for her wonderful apple
crisp, as well as gardening and canning. She was
also an avid baseball fan. Most of all, Mary enjoyed
being a wife, mother and grandmother.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents;
son, Jim Niedermyer; five brothers and sisters-inlaw, William and Catherine Epperson, Gerald and
Eleanor Epperson, Bernard and Louise Epperson,
Jerome and Rene Epperson, Philip Epperson; and
four sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and
Russ Woods, Dale Pearsall, Kathryn Epperson,
Joan and Francis Fulton. She is survived by her
husband Milt Niedermyer, Council Bluffs; four
children, Marilyn (Dan) Newland, Council Bluffs,
Frank Niedermyer and Stephanie, Omaha, Neb.,
Tom (Patty) Niedermyer, Magnolia; Hazel (Les)
Granum, Omaha, Neb.; 15 grandchildren; eight
great grandchildren; sister, Eileen (Dick) Smith,
York, Neb.; brother, Tom (Ramona) Epperson,
Germantown, Tenn.; and many other relatives and
friends.

Victor E. McCurley, 100, passed
away June 7, at Missouri Valley. Funeral
services were held at 3 p.m., Tuesday,
June 11, at Hennessey Funeral Home,
Missouri Valley, with Father Mike
Berner officiating. Musical selections
were, “Amazing Grace,” and “How
Great Thou Art.” Casket bearers were
Doug Wilson, Nick Johnson, Tom
Haverkamp, Mike Johnson, Doug
Johnson, and Paul Haverkamp. Final
resting place was the Magnolia Catholic Cemetery, Magnolia.
Victor was born Oct. 7, 1912, the son of James B. and Mary
B. (Lovell) McCurley, in Logan. As a child, Victor’s family moved
to Missouri Valley. After graduation from Missouri Valley High
School in 1932, Victor left Iowa to pursue employment in River
Rough, Mich. In River Rough, Victor gained employment as a
construction worker in a shipyard. Dec. 31, 1941, Victor was
united in marriage to Johanna C. Suedbeck, Sioux City, in
Monroe, Mich. With the advent of World War II, Victor enlisted
in the United States Navy. On Labor Day 1942, he was inducted
into the 29th Naval Construction Battalion. After serving 38
month during World War II, Victor also served an additional
18 months during the Korean War. Upon completion of his
military service, Victory and Johanna returned to the Midwest
and lived in Sioux City. While in Sioux City, Victor was
employed as a carpenter for Cudahy Meat Packing Co., until
the company’s closing, Victor and Johanna then relocated to
New York, N.Y., for a short time but eventually returned to the
Midwest and re-established their family in Harrison County.
Throughout his life, Victor was employed as a carpenter on
many significant construction accomplishments including the
Sears Tower in Chicago, Ill.
Victor was preceded in death by his parents James and Mary
McCurley; son Victor McCurley Jr., and his siblings.
Survivors include his wife Johanna; children, Lawrence
McCurley, Lincoln, Neb., Victoria and husband Douglas
Johnson, Dakota City, Neb., Hal and wife Peggy, Richmond,
Texas; and Mary and husband Paul Haverkamp, Algona; six
grandchildren.

Magic contest
Fifty-two entries were judged at the 4-H Milk
Made Magic Contest Thursday, June 6, at the
Extension Office in Logan. The contest is held
annually recognizing June Diary Month to promote
the use of dairy products in cooking and baking.
Judges for the contest were Mary Poe, Woodbine,
and Teresa Smith, Woodbine.
The 2013 Milk Made Magic winners were:
•Hors d’oeuvres and Appetizers: Emma Anunson,
Missouri Valley, Shrimp Cheese Spread.
•Salads: Marissa Knott, Pisgah, Blueberry Salad.
•Quick and Yeast Breads: Victoria Barksdale,
Dunlap, Savory Onion Corn Bread.
•Main Dishes: Marissa Knott, Pisgah, Caramel
French Toast.

Dunlap, Easy Lasagna Squares.

Chocolate.

Pisgah, Eggnog Cookies.

Blue Dessert.
